However, as can be seen by these images, Boise is not your typical urban setting. It has a large population and is the state of Idahos capital. But, within a short drive of Boise, one can find the Sawtooth mountains with friends as shown here.2

Boise State University is the home of the Broncos. Nationally, they are probably best known for their football program. However, there is more to Boise State than just the blue turf and football.3

Description of the Programjimmywayne

In addition, Jerry Foster states, The Department of Educational Technology at Boise State University was among Americas pioneering institutions that in the early 1980s recognized a need for teaching educators how to improve student engagement and learning through effective technology integration. By 1988, a masters program was in place, and by 1999 all classes were offered online. The EdTech department offers three graduate certificates, two Masters programs, and an EdD program that will be coming online soon.7Graduate CertificatesOnline TeachingTechnology IntegrationSchool Technology Coordination

Gerry Slabaugh

Boise State University is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU). As stated on the accreditation page of the edtech.boisestate.edu website, the NWCCU is charged with measuring and vouching for the academic integrity of postsecondary educational institutions in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington. In the podcast, Jerry Foster also pointed out that Boise State is funded by the state legislature of Idaho. Also, the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) accredits the online program at Boise State.12Free Online OrientationTuition and CostSynchronous and asynchronous Virtual learning

Success Factors

There are several factors that have allowed Boise State to develop a successful online program for Educational Technology. Among them are the four listed on this slide. First, before students even decide if they want to invest their time and money into pursuing a degree at Boise State, they can complete the free online orientation. Secondly, the tuition and cost are very reasonable. According to the EdTech website, all students pay $348 per credit. Therefore, the cost of an entire Masters degree is approximately $11,484. Thirdly, through Moodle, Blackboard, discussion forums, virtual worlds, blogs, and wikis, students can complete their course work at any time of the day thus leading to a synchronous and asynchronous method of learning. Finally, Boise State is proud of its endeavors and pioneering into the teaching via virtual worlds such as Second Life. Through practice, the goal is to help students transfer these new skills into the K-12 setting and integrate it into the curriculum.13First impressions can set the theme (Ritter et al 2010)Visionary and insightful (Karakas 2007)Communication and feedback (Watson & Gemin 2009)Storytelling & Social Presence (Lowenthal & Dunlap 2010)Branding (Nunan 2005)Links (ODLAA 2009)

Analysis of the Program

Many of the qualities that have been identified in the course readings are evident at Boise State. This list of qualities is not exhaustive of what the EdTech program exemplifies. Ritter et al stated that first impressions are very important. When logging onto the EdTech homepage, the video about Virtual Learning naturally catches ones eye. Secondly, Karakas stated that to have quality, a program must be visionary and insightful. Boise States EdTech program was many years ahead considering that a complete online Masters program was in place by 1999. Obviously, this program was developed during the infancy of computer and Internet-based distance education. To be successful, a program must be able to communicate with its members and with the outside community. With students in many parts of the world and through Web 2.0 tools, Boise State fulfills this requirement. This ties into the quality of developing links. Boise State is not only recognized by NCATE, but the EdTech program adheres to the ideas of iNACOL and other conferences. The virtual learning aspect is very unique. It allows the program to have a social presence like what Lowenthal and Dunlap identified as a quality of a successful program and definitely assists in creating what Nunan identified as branding the program. 14Long historyLarge student populationEasy accessVirtual learning/cutting edgeAccreditationOnline Ed.D. Summary and Recommendations

Therefore, compared to other colleges and universities, Boise State has a long history in distance education. The EdTech program supports a large student body of about 250 students. Because of the synchronous and asynchronous capabilities, the program allows for easy access for students. The virtual learning environment keeps up with the cutting edge in teaching strategies. Also, Boise State adheres to many organizations ideas of quality to ensure that students are getting a good education. For other programs, they could learn many lessons from the EdTech division at Boise State. With these ideas and the combination of the University of Floridas complete online Ed.D. program, other institutions could develop into a success story in distance education.15Slide 1: By: Hawk Eyeshttp://www.flickr.com/photos/cpardue/1323782961/Slide 2:Capital: http://www.legendsofamerica.com/photos-idaho/BoiseIdaho.jpg Slide 2MooseRoger Lynnhttp://www.flickr.com/photos/rogerlynn/3605137983/Slide 3Stadiumhttp://boisestategameday.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/brocos-stadium.jpgImage References
