    Chief Justice Mark ERecktenwald was sworn in asChief Justice of the SupremeCourt on September 14, 2010He joined the Supreme Courtas an Associate Justice onMay 11, 2009, and previouslyserved as Chief Judge of theIntermediate Court of Appealsbeginning in April 2007. Prioto his appointment to theIntermediate Court of Appeals

    Recktenwald served as the director of the Department of

    Commerce and Consumer Aairs, as an Assistant UnitedStates Attorney for the District of Hawai`i, and as anattorney in private practice. He received his undergraduatedegree from Harvard University and his law degree fromthe University of Chicago.

    THE HONORABLE CRAIG H. NAKAMURA

    Chief Judge Craig H. Nakamurawas sworn in as Chief Judgeof the Intermediate Court oAppeals on September 162009. He graduated from IolanSchool in 1974 and received

    his bachelors degree from theUniversity of Hawai`i in 1978Judge Nakamura graduatedcum laude from Harvard Law

    School in 1981. After law school, Judge Nakamura was a lawclerk for U.S. Circuit Judge Herbert Choy and an associatewith the firm of Goodsill, Anderson, Quinn & Stifel. In 1986he became an Assistant U.S. Attorney, a position he helduntil his appointment to the Intermediate Court of Appealsas an Associate Judge on April 8, 2004.

    Judge Nakamura previously taught Appellate Advocacy asan adjunct professor at the William S. Richardson Schooof Law and served as a director of the Hawai`i State BaAssociation.

    This seminar will include several excingand informave panels. Our speakersinclude civil and criminal appellatepraconers, Hawaii Supreme CourtJusces, and Hawaii Intermediate Courtof Appeals Judges, such as Former HawaiiSupreme Court Jusce Simeon R.     Topics include appellate jurisdicon, aninsiders view of the Hawaii appellatecourts, and criminal appeals.

    Justice Simeon R. Acoba, Jr. is aformer Hawaii Supreme CourAssociate Justice. He servedon the court from 2000-2014Justice Acoba also served onthe Intermediate Court oAppeals and the First CircuiCourt. Justice Acoba receivedhis undergraduate degree fromthe University of Hawaii, and hilaw degree from NorthwesternUniversity Law School.

    DANIEL JAMES KUNKEL

    Daniel James Kunkel receivedhis juris doctor degree from

    the University of San DiegoSchool of Law in 1993, and fortwo years he served as a judicialclerk for Supreme Court ofHawaii Associate Justice PaulaNakayama. Licensed to practicelaw in seven jurisdictions, Mr.Kunkel worked as a trial attorneyfor the Honolulu Departmentof Corporation Counsel, as wellas the law firms of McCorristonMiller Mukai MacKinnon and

    Ashford & Wriston. In 2002, Mr. Kunkel began working as asta attorney for the Supreme Court of Hawaii, and whensubstantial changes in appellate jurisdiction went into

    eect in 2006, Mr. Kunkel began working as a sta attorneyfor the Hawaii Intermediate Court of Appeals, where heassists the appellate judges with, among other things, theiranalysis of appellate jurisdiction.

    Associate Judge Alexa D.M.Fujise was with the Cityand County of HonolulusDepartment of the Prosecuting

    Attorney between 1984 and2004. Before her departure,she became the director ofthe Research and ReferenceSupport Division. Throughouther 20-year tenure with thedepartment, Judge Fujise alsoserved as appellate research

    branch chief and deputy prosecuting attorney. JudgeFujise also worked as assistant disciplinary counsel forthe Office of Disciplinary Counsel, where she investigatedand prosecuted violations of the Code of ProfessionalResponsibility by attorneys in the State of Hawai`i. Shestarted her legal career in 1980 as a law clerk to then-Associate Justice Herman T.F. Lum. Judge Fujise, who hasspecialized in criminal and constitutional law, is licensedto practice in the U.S. District Court of Hawai`i, U.S. Courtof Appeals, Ninth Circuit, and the U.S. Supreme Court. Sheearned her bachelors and law degrees from the Universityof Hawai`i. She has been on the Board of the William S.Richardson School of Law Alumni Association since 1980and was the recipient of the Deans Distinguished AlumniAward in 2005. Judge Fujise taught appellate practiceseminars for the National District Attorneys Associationand the William S. Richardson School of Law.

    THE HONORABLE ALEXA D. M. FUJISE

    Deirdre Marie-Iha is an attorney with the Appellate Divisionfor the Department of the Attorney General. She graduated

    from Cornell University in 1996 and the University ofColorado School of Law in 1999. Deirdre practiced inCalifornia until 2003. In 2003, she clerked for AssociateJudge Corinne K.A. Watanabe at the Intermediate Court oAppeals. In 2004, she joined the Attorney Generals officeand has been there ever since. Deirdre works on a widevariety of matters in both the State and Federal courtswith a heavy emphasis on constitutional law and appeals.

    THE HONORABLE JAMES E. DUFFY, JR. (Ret.)

    Justice James E. Duy, Jr. is aformer Hawaii Supreme CourtAssociate Justice. He servedon the court from 2003-2012

    Prior to serving on the SupremeCourt, Justice Duy was afounding member of the firmFujiyama, Duy and Fujiyamaand a practicing trial lawyefor 35 years. Justice Duy isa graduate of the College oSt. Thomas and Marquette

    University Law School (1968) where he was a member ofthe Board of Editors of the Marquette Law Review.

    Randy Q. Pinal has been the Hawai`i Intermediate Court ofAppeals Supervising Sta Attorney since 2012. He serveson the standing committee to review the Hawaii Rules

    of Appellate Procedure, and several committees chargedwith implementing the Judiciarys 20/20 Strategic PlanHe previously served as a Supervising Deputy AttorneyGeneral in the California Attorney Generals Office, wherehe practiced civil, criminal, and administrative law at allevels in state and federal court, and received the AttorneyGenerals Award for Outstanding Client Representation. Healso was a contributing author and editor of the AmericanIndian Law Deskbook.

    RANDY Q. PINAL

    Craig Jerome graduated summa cum laude in 2007 fromthe William S. Richardson School of Law at the Universityof Hawai`i. While attending the Richardson School of Lawhe was a member of the editorial board of the Universityof Hawai`i Law Review. After graduation, he clerked fothe Honorable Richard W. Pollack. Since 2008, he hasbeen employed as a Deputy Public Defender for the Stateof Hawai`i. He has also served as a Lecturer in Law at theRichardson School of Law.
