BY KAREN NAKAMURA

Have you ever wondered what sets professionalhome builders apart from guys who work “outof the back of their trucks”? Well, the answer is

simple and it comes from the word “professional.” As with most professions, home builders and re-

modelers who keep up-to-date with new laws, meth-ods and materials can offer the most to their clients. You wouldn’t feel comfortable getting your taxesdone by someone who hasn’t studied the latest taxcode or going to a doctor who only finished four yearsof medical school instead of 12, would you?

Is it time to replace your wornout windows with newAnlin windows? Here are five reasons why youshould consider doing so in 2011.

11.. SSEECCUURRIITTYY. Jalousie windows are the easiest tobreak into. It only takes a thief a matter of minutes to re-move the glass and enter your home. Anlin windowshave passed the stringent CFE (California Forced Entry)requirements. They come with a tamper-proof, cam-locksystem that allows you to lock windows in the open po-sition to prevent the uninvited from gaining access, butstill provide enough ventilation to keep your abode cool.

22.. CCOOMMFFOORRTT. Anlin windows are a dual-pane infiniteenergy barrier. They will keep heat and harmful ultravi-olet light reflected away from your home, thus keepingthings cool. If you have air conditioning, you can saveup to 35 percent of your energy bill each month.

33.. PPRRIIVVAACCYY//AAPPPPEEAARRAANNCCEE. New Anlin windowsgive your home a new home look and increase the valueof your home the day that they are installed. WindowsHawaii has six different types of obscure/frosted glassthat will give your home a distinctive look and afford youprivacy without the need for curtains or window cover-ing.

44.. MMAAIINNTTEENNAANNCCEE FFRREEEE. Anlin windows come witha lifetime installation warranty. This covers not only thewindows themselves, but the installation as well. If oneof your Windows Hawaii-provided windows leaks in 15years, call the service department and the company willrepair or replace it at no cost. The marine-grade vinyl iseasy to clean — guaranteed not to fade, crack or pow-der, and is great for Hawaii’s salty air. Additionally, theeasy-clean glass reduces the need to clean your win-dows.

55.. PPRRIICCEE. We have installed over 100,000 windows. We carry most major brands so that you can choose thewindow that is right for your home and budget. Our buy-ing power and factory direct purchasing gets the bestquality for the lowest price. You pay when you are com-pletely satisfied with your windows and our installation. We don’t use sub-contractors.

When looking for someone tobuild your home, make sureyou settle on a general contrac-

tor you’re comfortable working with. To qualify that statement, after

interviewing potential contractors, you should base your final decisionon the contractor’s quality of recentprojects, as well as his knowledge ofbuilding, his relationship with sub-contractors and his references.

Steven Wong of Island Home De-signs (IHD) is a general contractoryou can trust. He’s on time for meet-ings, honest, communicates well andfinds solutions to problems.

Family and friends say it was abrave task taking on a recent projectof tearing down an old house and re-building it from the ground up. The

house was a virtual buffet station fortermites, with its foundation blocksliterally floating over the dirt.

But Wong had no fear and was de-termined to get things done. He has acalm demeanor and is patient withcustomers. If he doesn’t know abouta product, he researches it and pro-vides feedback.

The relationship with your generalcontractor is a partnership. Like amaestro in a symphony, general con-tractors orchestrate the sub-contrac-tors every move.

Many residents don’t have the expe-rience to coordinate home construc-tion from the ground up. Let IHD bethe one to help you get started.

AA trendd thatt willl stickaround

A small change in aroom can make a huge dif-ference — and wall cover-ings make a dramatic, yetcost-effective statement. With its innovative newSmartStick repositionablewall murals, Murals YourWay has made it easy forhomeowners, renters andeven college students toadd a fresh new look to in-door and outdoor walls, floors, doors and windows.“Easily re-applied and re-moved, SmartStick muralsboast a high quality, lightly

textured finish and can bereused and reinstalledhundreds of times,” saysTodd Imholte, president ofMurals Your Way. “It’s aperfect temporary — orlong-term — decoratingsolution for consumers."

Illuminatingg insightsAs living green becomes

more ingrained in ourlives, LED lighting willcontinue to light the way, according to Jeff Dross, senior product manager ofKichler Lighting, who willintroduce several newunder-cabinet systems andlandscape products withan ultra-efficient technol-ogy next year. For a casual, contemporary twist, Drossalso suggests hangingchandeliers in new areassuch as bathrooms, bed-rooms and closets, and em-bracing today's art glassapplications, which aremuch more chic and casualthan the Tiffany lamps ofthe past.

There'ss nothingg blandaboutt neutrals

In a recent video postedon her website, MichelleLamb — co-founder andchairwoman of Minneapo-

lis-based Marketing Direc-tions Inc. and editorial di-rector of The Trend Curve— spoke about a resur-gence in neutrals in 2011.These more complex“chameleon” neutrals willhave more color, and willshift and change based onthe light and whatever'saround them. Lamb claimsthat these neutrals will be“the likes of which wehaven't seen in 20 years ormore.”

You'vee gottaa havee heartThe kitchen remains the

“heart of thehome,” accordingto Andrea Vollf ofAndrea Vollf Inte-riors. Consumersinterested in re-modeling theirkitchens shouldconsider a well-de-signed, open, airylayout that inte-grates the kitcheninto the rest oftheir homes. Drossalso suggests newcountertop materi-als in lieu of gran-ite, such as quartzstone or bindingcrushed recyclableglass underneath a

solid, smooth surface forthose seeking green alter-natives.

Underfoott butt nott un-derrated

M. Grace Sielaff of M.Grace Designs Inc. envi-sions rich-looking herring-bone-patterned hardwoodfloors in an ebony oak fin-ish — paying attention toboard thickness and givingspecial consideration toproducts that meet indus-try LEED requirements. For a green touch, Freder-ick suggests hardwood

flooring from reclaimedwood or sustainably grownand harvested sources. Toadd warmth, Marta Cullenof Dream Interiors sug-gests round rugs — thebigger, the better.

Thingss aree definitelylookingg up

According to JanetDavidsen of Details in De-sign Inc., homeowners arecasting their eyes upward. The ceiling will be embel-lished and noticed more asthe "fifth wall," and may bepainted or architecturally

enhanced to play more of afocal point in a space.Sielaff also suggests home-owners consider a paintedmetallic ceiling with a large,eye-catching chandelier.

According to KathyHoffman of Susan Fred-man Design Group, prod-ucts and materials such asbronze, copper, clay, cot-ton, linen and hemp —which are environmentallyfriendly, contribute tohealthy indoor air quality,

and can be repur-posed or recycledat the end of theirlifespan — will bein high demand.Vollf adds thatusing such naturaltextures as hemp, jute, organic cot-ton, recycled poly-ester, bamboofiber, organic wooland linen, and soysilk will help keepit simple but stillgreen.

Forr Flatt Screens andWalll Mounts, There’s NoSuch Thing As Too Slim

Slim is "in" ... and notjust for people watch-ing their weight. Flat

screen TVs and the wallmounts that turn the TVsinto decorator showpiecesseem to grow sleeker andslimmer every year. Andwhen it comes to viewingtechnology, thinner notonly looks better, it haspractical advantages, too.

Yes, ultra-slim flatscreens may cost you a fewmore dollars initially, butin the long run will proba-bly provide you withenough user satisfaction tojustify the extra expense. And don't forget thatprices for standard flatscreens dropped precipi-tously in just a few yearsafter the products enteredthe marketplace, so it'slikely prices for slim mod-

els will follow suit. Here are a few reasons

why you should go trimand slim when buying aflat screen and wall mount:

Aestheticc appeal

If you bought a flatscreen TV in 2006, it maystill work well but it prob-ably takes up quite a bit ofspace on your TV stand or— if you wall-mounted it— sticks out into the roomconsiderably. Older flatscreens tended to be sev-eral inches thick and couldappear bulky, even whenmounted high on the wall.

Today's slimmer stylesmay be just an inch or twothick, and ultra-slim mod-els can be less than an inchthick. Less bulk means theTV looks better, whetherit's stand- or wall-

mounted. And new super-slim full-motion wallmounts like Sanus' Vision-Mount VLF311 Super Slim, provide all the advantagesand conveniences of wall-mounting a flat screen, butwithout adding a lot ofbulk to the TV's profile. The mounts offer a fullrange of motion courtesyof fingertip-tilt technology, but place flat screens 36 to65 inches in size just 1.25inches from the wall.

Safetyy factor

The weight of flatscreens can be deceptive.Even older models look sosleek that it's easy to un-derestimate their weight. But all TVs tend to beheavy, and, if not properlysecured to the wall or aTV stand, can tip over,

posing an injury risk topeople and pets in thehousehold. Less bulkmeans slim flat screens area bit lighter than theirthicker counterparts. Re-member, however, that it'simperative to properly se-cure all TVs, includingslim flat screens, in orderto ensure they're safe —and enjoyable — foreveryone in the home.

Efficiency

Manufacturers havebeen improving the effi-ciency of flat screens sincethe TVs emerged on thehome market. Virtuallyany flat screen — whetherplasma or LCD — that youpurchase in 2011 is sure tobe more energy-efficient

and produce abetter picturequality than anolder version.

Some of theultra-thin mod-els boast superefficiency, re-quiring no moreelectricity tooperate than alight bulb. Mo-torized TV wallmounts alsooffer energy ef-ficiency andquiet operation.

As flat screent e c h n o l o g ycontinues to advance, it'scertain that TVs will be-come even slimmer andmore energy efficient. Andwith super-slim wallmounts available, that tech-

nological showpiece ofyour home decor can stillmaintain a low profilewhen it comes to howmuch space it takes up inyour living room.

In the home building profession, there arenew building codes every three years, in addi-tion to new energy, fire, plumbing, electricaland mechanical codes, all of which come withcountless upgrades. There are statewide, county, municipal and city codes. Professionalhome builders and remodelers have to be ontop of these and take them into considerationwhen building your new home.

Because buying a new home is such a hugeinvestment, one that you will live with formany years, it makes sense to have it built bysomeone who knows the latest codes, as wellas someone who knows what the newest mate-rials and techniques are, where to get them, and how to use them. Each year there are hun-dreds of new products available to make yourhome better and your life easier.

Many residential construction industryprofessionals keep abreast of new rules, product advancements and changing tech-nology by attending the annual Interna-tional Builders’ Show. More than 50,000 ofthe industry’s top professionals — builders, remodelers, architects and suppliers — at-tend the IBS, which is scheduled for Jan. 12-

15 in Orlando, Fla. One of the largest professional trade shows in

the country, the IBS is a weeklong learning expe-rience consisting of around 200 seminars cover-ing everything from housing trends to newproducts and services to the latest installationtechniques. In additional to the education ses-sions, about 1,000 manufacturers and suppliersdisplay their products across approximately500,000 net square feet of exhibit space during afour-day trade show.

During Green Day at IBS, manufacturers show-case their newest energy- and water-efficient ap-pliances and products and there are classes forgreen project management, design trends andbuilding science. The federal Department of En-ergy’s 20 college Solar Decathlon teams also dis-play models of the solar-powered homes they’llbe building on the National Mall this fall.

IBS is just one of the many programs, certifica-tions and on-going educational efforts that pro-fessional home builders and remodelersundertake to be able to provide you with the bestproducts and services available when it comes toyour home.

If it’s time to turn yourbaby's nursery into adomain fit for a big

boy or girl, you may bewondering how to redothe room in a style they’resure to love — and thatwon't cost you a bundle. After all, there's a goodchance you'll be doing itall over again in a fewyears when their tasteschange again.

The secret to redoing achild's room successfullyand cost effectively ispretty much the same se-cret designers use to redoadult rooms on the cheap— paint, accessories, smart design touches andan understanding of whatthe room's occupants al-ready love. Parents poisedto plunge into kids' roomrenovations, have an extraadvantage that adult roomdesigners don't have —the love all kids seem toshare for certain cartooncharacters.

You can cost-effec-tively pay homage to yourchild’s favorite charactersby focusing on three keyareas of the room:

1.. Walls. Paint is one ofthe easiest design ele-ments to change, andpainting a room is wellwithin the capabilities ofmost do-it-yourselfers.And by the time they'reable to voice their opinionabout their room, mostkids know what colorsthey like — and don’t —so you can engage yourchild in the redesignprocess by letting him orher make some colorchoices.

Another way to choosea room color is to identifya favorite piece of art-work and draw color in-spiration from it.Consider placing a Disneywall mural on one wall of

your child’s room andpainting the other threewalls with colors found inthe mural scene. You canfind wall murals that fea-ture characters from suchDisney favorites as “ToyStory 3,” “Cars,” “Winniethe Pooh” and “DisneyPrincess” at www.mural-syourway.com. The mu-rals can be customized forsize and to include yourchild's name, photo or anyimage. And, they’rereusable, so if one childoutgrows the look, youcan easily remove themural and reuse it in an-other child's room lateron.

2.. Fabrics. You’ve

probably seen bed setsthat feature popular car-toon characters, and acomforter festoonedwith your daughter's fa-vorite princess is sure toplease her. But don'toverlook other fabrics inthe room that could helpyou complete the room’slook at little cost.

Drapes in a color thatcomplements the bedlinens can make theroom pop. For example,if your daughter adoresher Tinker Bell bedsheets, look for curtains(a light sheer will befeminine and allow inlots of light) in a lightgreen that matches thecharacter's dress. If your

son is a big BuzzLightyear fan, considercurtains that have anouter space theme.

Next, look down. Ifyour home has hard-woods in the bedrooms,

an accent rug can under-score the room's themeand provide a warm spotfor cold feet on wintermornings. Or, if you havewall-to-wall carpeting,an area rug can help pro-

tect carpet from wearand tear.

3.. Accessories.. Just asthe right accessories canturn a so-so outfit into awinner, accessories in aroom can add the finish-ing touch. You'll have notrouble finding a plethoraof cartoon character-themed items, fromSpongeBob alarm clocksto Scooby Doo nightlights.

Be sure to look foritems that are useful aswell as decorative. For ex-ample, accent pillowslook great on the bed andcan do double-duty ascomfy cushions whenkids sit on the floor toread or play.

Having your roof replacedis a big undertaking. Notonly does it affect your

schedule and your home, but italso has the potential of disturb-ing your neighbors. While thisis not so much a factor if yourhome is large and on an acre ofland, for homes that are intown, the disturbance can bemuch more palpable.

If you have never had yourroof replaced and are consider-ing having it done, here aresome of the things you can ex-pect during the replacement.

CCoonnssuullttaattiioonnThe first thing that you can

expect with a roof replacementis a consultation with a few dif-ferent roofing contractors. Youwill need to get written esti-mates so that you can compareprices, time frames and thework that will be done. It isvery important to take this stepseriously and solicit as manyconsultations as you need untilyou find someone who is notonly knowledgeable and experi-enced, but who also makes youfeel comfortable with his work.

Once you accept a contract, you will be given dates forwhen the replacement willoccur. This is usually a ball-park figure, as opposed to datesset in stone, because rain de-lays invariably occur. How-ever, be wary of the contractorwho keeps pushing off yourjob, even when the rains havebeen non-existent. Do not beafraid to ask them when thework will be completed andcall them if you feel you arebeing put off.

TThhee JJoobbDepending on the size of

your roof and what needs to bedone, the job may take any-

where from a day to a week.Larger roofs with a varietyof heights and angles willobviously take more timethan smaller, less compli-cated roofs. On the first dayof the job, most roofing con-tractors will hire a dump-ster that will be placed inyour yard, driveway or thestreet area in front of yourhome.

Contractors may alsocover your shrubs andplants with drop cloths toprevent them from damageshould old roofing materialfall on them. It is a goodidea to ask them if they willbe covering your plants, sothat you can do this aheadof time should it not be partof their prep work. Youshould also park your carsaway from the dumpsterand work area.

On the first day, theroofers will be pulling upshingles and tossing theminto the dumpster. Theremay be the sounds of powertools depending on the typeof roof you currently haveand how it is attached toyour rafters.

Murakami Roofing Ser-vice is based out of Ka-neohe, and it specializes inresidential and light com-mercial roofing — both fullre-roof and partial re-roof.The company also special-izes in rooftop coating tohelp cool down your house, and has the ability to re-place and repair dry-rot,and termite-eaten roofsprior to installing the rooftop.
