Now in this city there dwelt two war- ring sects variously described as the Mish Nayree3 and the Anti Mish Nayrees. At the time, our tale begins the Mish Nayrees, otherwise, Beni Stevens or sons of well Mish Nayrees had their foes the Anti Mish Nayrees by means of foreign assistance wrested the power from, and governed their foes with a heavy hand that is heavy with gold wrung from the plundered tax- payers who were all of the Anti Mish Nayree sect, and objected strongly to thoir hard-earne- d money going into the ponche3 and stomachs of the chief . saints of the Mish Nayrees and their foroign mercenaries. But this is by the way. Now in the former days when the Mish Nay- rees wore out of power and place, their scrib&s and pharisecs but especially their scribos had rail ed and wept exceedingly sore, and declared that tho Grand Mufti of the police was a rogue, aud his department a don of thieves and robbers, and that it was a scandal to all good religion and government, and when by fraud and violence the' had sne ceeded in ousting the Anti Mish Nayreas their scribes publicly rejoiced and wrote long articles to sliow that now tho blessing of Heaven bad descended on the nation, and that the Grand Mnfti and the police department woald be pure as thev Angels of God also much moro frequently visible than they when on duty. But strange as it may seem tho first two Grand Muftis proved them- selves so nnfitted for association with the Chief Pharisees of the Mish Nayrees that they retired speedily and joined the ranks of the Anti-Mis- h Nayrees, and the scribes once more rejoiced and howled, and wrote long screeds to prove that there was "but one TV. And the new ttrand Aluui whose locks were of crimson hue in- - caruadino mingled with tho white of a purity which had uot been sullied "by contact with the rogues and thieves, liars and swindlers, opium-boodle- rs aud extortioners, bribe-take- rs and with whom ho sur. rounded himself as his assistants, said to himself now shall wo have that pure and holy city the Mish Nayroos desire this to bo. It is not tho business of tho polico to guard anythiag. I won't. My followers are too smart." So tho remaind- er was removed to another placo where neither thieves nor police- men break in and steal, but only Custom officers. And straight- way tho scribes of the Mish Nayree party wrote long and tediously to prove, .that these. sons of guns of policemou (on whose heads bo dirt,) who stole the opium wore anti-Mis- h Nayree emissaries in disguiso aud plot- ted this to bring disgrace on tho holy and pnre administra- tion of tho Mish Nayrees. ' z Righteousness.

    HONOLULU, OCT. 14, 1S93.

    TOPICS OF THE DAY.

    ' The letter which. Chief Justiceyuuu wrote to Mr. jiicArtour 01tbo JVoy liudgd and which wo

    ,' published last week has created a"great deal of comment It

    . v, :bas proven to tho countrythat the head of theJudiciary Department is activelyengaged in politics, and it isgenontlly admitted that such a"fact is unparalleled in any civi-lized country. Even in the Unit-ed States, the most politically cor-rupt country known, we neverhear of a Supremo Judge doing

    ' politic 1 work and signing therolls of political organizations. AJudge should bo abovo suspicion.But who can believe in tho im-partiality uud integrity of aJudge, who, iu tho men who mustappoar before him rocognizes poli-tical friends or political foes. Inn certain way it is to bo regrettedthat tho trno position and senti-ments of tho Chief Justice havebecome known, because, it isvory unfortunate for tho countrythat doubts should arise as totho fairness of our highest courtof Justice. On the other hand,it is perhaps woll that our oyeshave been openod. "When theday of reconstructing tho govern-ment horo arrives, there will nolonger bo any doubt of what is to"bo dono to confidencein tho Supremo Court. ;

    And now tho Star dosires toship Mr. Dole off to "Washington."What ho is going to do thero isunoxplatncd, oxcopt that ho is tocall Nordhoff a liar withoutproving it, though, nnd thou'compote with other "Ambassa-dors", in diplomncy. By allmoans let him go. If Messrs.Thurston, Alexander, Oleson,Hastings and. even tho janitor aronot enough to look after tho iuterest of Hawaii and xnoro especiallyof tho annexation club, why shipof! some moro. Send D le,and theeditors of the Star and the Ad-vertiser (not in the same vesselthough), send Dr. Rodgersaud thopilots (not at night) send themono and all -- nud let them stayihoro for good.

    "What in tho namo of heavenis Mr, Dole going to accomplishwhich cannot bo dono by Thurs-ton and ; Company. Therohave been forwarded, from heroabout a dozen men as commission-ers aad ministers and envoys andsecretaries and despatch bearersand God knows what and thopieces of then have all beeugathered up and shipped back inbaskets and nothing has overbeon accomplished. of hitn in Washington papers helias presumably' not materialized.

    H.Mr. Dole needs the -- tripabroad for his health well andeood. All we can say h; that thecountrv should not bo made topay his travelling expenses. Lotthe annexation club " with itsBine-tent- h of all the wealth inHawaii (according to Thurston)dig up tho spondulicks andpension off Mr. Dole. To burdentho treasury, already overburden-ed, with now. calls for salariesand fees and incidentals

    more junketing expeditions apparently to furthera lost cause, but virtually toprovide sinecures for tho petswho need a change of air andscenery is an outrage againstwhich every decent man andevery honest meaning citizenshould protest .

    Grave complaints are constantreaching us from the Fish Mar-ket in regard :to the condition oftho place' and the lack of cleani-les- s.

    A placo where food is soldshould certainly bo kept in sucha shape that all reasonable sani-tary demands aro attended to.The Board of Health should.lookinto tho matter and if the clerkof tho market does not feel in-clined to attend to his duties .heshould bo romoved. The FishMarket in itself is a disgrace tothe community, but the condi-tion of it is worse to-da- y than everbefore.

    A NEW DODGE !

    The Advertiser editor presuma-bly acting under instructions fromheadquarters will to-da- y mail thefollowing blank to different citizensand try to got them to publiclystate their jiolitical views andsentiments. We do not believethat anybody will take notice ofthe "artful dodger" whoso gigilnticbrain controls the Advertiser, butit.maybe of interest to watch theresults. By the way we didn'tthink that anybody who is againstannexation was entitled to anopinion according to Johnstoneand the Club. Evidently, a changehas come over the dreams of ourLords and Rulers.

Ail of theattendents were clothed in theirbest. Two Companies of armedmen wero drawn, up in line infront of tho Palace building (Oh!what desecration) to dp tho niilitary honors.

    The visitors arrived and left allinsido of fifteen minutes. As theoccasion did not require nnyspeech-makin- g that part of theceremony ras dispensed with.

    The honors accorded to theNaval visitors yesterday, werothose which ore due to personsof higher rank. That "officialetiquette had been moro thancomplied with (vide Star) wasnot the fault of the visitors, butshows what asses the presentMilitarv Authorities "can niako "ofthemselves.
