KENNETH L. TANO JR. passed away on June 12th, 2005 after battling Hodgkin's Lymphoma for over a year. He was 38 years old. He will be missed forever. He was the strength for his family and was always concerned about everyone but himself. His love of life, great spirit, and sense of humor are what drew so many people to him. When he walked into a room, the room lit up and was filled with laughter and warmth. He certainly touched a lot of lives in his short time here with us and we can only imagine what impact he is making now. Kenny fought a tough battle with his disease and never once complained, never questioned why it was him and just took each day as a gift from God and focused on getting better. Even the doctors and nurses loved his positive outlook because all he would say when they discussed a "new" plan for him, would be "bring it on". He wasn't afraid at all. He just wanted to get back to feeling good again. He was an amazing father to Chelsea and Malia. He was so proud of them. They will continue to carry on dad's positive outlook and great spirit everyday. He lived for his children and they kept him busy with cross country meets, track meets, soccer games, school activities and trips to Disneyland. He was a hands on dad, no doubt about it. He was so involved in their lives. In fact, he was always one of the few dads at school in the middle of the day to watch one of their many award ceremonies. They, in turn, were always so proud of him. As a husband, he was so loving, caring, giving and encouraging. He was such a provider for his family. He was always taking care of everyone and was never selfish. He was always so proud of his family and would comment on how lucky he was to have created such a

loving family. In his spare time, he loved searching out the latest electronic equipment. He also had a love for cars and bought an '86 Mustang that he toyed around with. He had an incredible voice and loved to sing. He also enjoyed playing the piano and guitar. He was such a talented well-rounded person. He had an incredible sense of humor and brought so much laughter to the people around him. Kenny was born in San Mateo, CA and moved back to Hawaii when he was about 1. He was raised on Oah'u and left for Whittier College in 1985 where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree. He met his wife in California in 1988 and they were married in 1990. Eva Texeira -- Her Kapahulu garden drew crowds, stopped traffic and delighted neighbors. It was a field trip destination for classes at nearby elementary schools, and a regular stop for those wanting to get into the Christmas spirit any time of year. For more than 30 years, Eva Texeira filled her Hunter Street lawn with scores of Christmas decorations -- which stayed up year-round -- and hundreds of garden statues. Her obsession was a full-time occupation that kept her trimming grass and cleaning garden ornaments from sun-up to sunset, relatives said. "The decorations were an all-around job," said Eugene Vierra, one of Texeira's sons. "She cut the grass with scissors -- the whole yard! Every day, she's trimming." Texeira, who started her garden after retiring from Love's Bakery in the mid-1970s, died Wednesday at the Queen's Medical Center. She was 87. Almost daily, Texeira's collection grew with donations from family members, neighbors and even strangers. And at least once a month, she would insist to be taken to other over-the-top yards, including one in Pearl City that she especially admired, Vierra said. Christmastime brought even more festoons. One year, Texeira decorated a lawn tree with hundreds of soda cans cut into pinwheels. That, Vierra said, was an especially big hit with the neighbors. Texeira was able to cut her own grass until about three years ago, when bending down became difficult. But only within the last few weeks -- anticipating that her health was failing -- did Texeira start giving her lawn statues away to family members, friends and whoever else would take them. There are still several left in her garden, and Vierra said the remaining decorations are up for grabs. Texeira is survived by sons Eugene and Clifford Vierra, and daughters Adele Jaynes and Bernadette Texeira. She had 46 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren. Services for Texeira are set for Thursday at St. Patrick Catholic Church. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m., and Mass will start at 11:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Diamond Head Cemetery. Leon "Fafa" Toofa - Tahitian Leon "Fafa" Toofa showed Valley Isle residents not only how to build canoes, but also took them into the forest of East Maui to harvest the koa trees for logs."He could pretty much free-hand anything with a chain saw," said Charles Noland,

a Maui resident who served as an apprentice to Toofa. Toofa, 67, of Pueu island, died Saturday June 25, 2005 evening during a fishing trip, after a large wave swept him into the ocean at Makaalae south of Hana Town, police Lt. Michael Kahoohanohano said. Friends were unable to save him, and his body was retrieved about a half-hour to an hour after police received the call at 5:30 p.m., Kahoohanohano said. Toofa was among a group of master canoe builders from other Pacific islands to participate in 2000 and 2002 in canoe-building events during the annual International Festival of Canoes in Lahaina. "It's really sad," said Theo Morrison, executive director of the Lahaina Town Action Committee. "He was a great master carver." Noland recalled that Toofa, who helped to supervise the harvesting of logs for the festival, was able to finish building a canoe in half a day. Noland said he became Toofa's apprentice and helped him build three koa canoes for canoe clubs on Maui, harvesting the logs in East Maui in forests where there were only pig trails. They would bless the trees before harvesting them and then rely upon canoe club members and supporters to haul them out of the forests, he said. Whenever Toofa had money from building canoes on Maui, he would send it home to his family, Noland said. "He was very family-oriented," Noland said. [SB June 28, 2005]
