Purpose

• Verbs are words that state the action in a sentence. Depending on when the action is happening is the verb tense that is used.

• This module will help you identify which verb tense to use in any situation.

• Don’t worry, it’s easier than you think!

Introduction

• This is a module for learning verbs, verb tenses and active/passive voice in a sentence.

• There will be a pre-test, so you have an idea of where you are.

• The pre-test will be followed by a learning exercise to buff up your skills.

• After the learning exercise, you will take a post-test to see how much you learned.

Learning Activity:

• What is a verb?

• A verb is defined as a word used to describe an action, state, or occurrence, and forming the main part of the predicate of a sentence, such as hear, become, happen.

• In simpler terms, the verb is the word that says the action that takes place in a sentence.

• Example: The robot is dancing.

• A good way to figure it out is to ask yourself: what is the subject doing?

• Take the previous example: The robot is dancing.

• The subject is the person or object the sentence talks about, in this case, the robot.

• So, you ask yourself: what is the robot doing?

• The answer, in this case dancing, is going to be the verb of the sentence.

• The verb tense is what tells us when the action is taking place.

• There are three basic verb tenses: past, present and future.

• These tenses will help you figure out whether the action already happened, is happening or will happen.

Verb Tense:

• When the verb is in the past tense, it means the action already happened.

• In regular verbs, the past tense of the verb ends in “ed”.

• The “ed” at the end of the verb indicates that it is in the past tense, it does not matter if the subject is in singular form (just one) or plural form (more than one).

• Example: (singular) The robot danced.

(plural) The robots danced.

• When the verb is in the present tense, it means the action is happening.

• In regular verbs, the present tense of the verb ends in “s” when the subject is in singular form, and stays in basic form when the subject is in plural form.

• Example: (singular) The robot dances.

• When the verb is in the future tense, it means the action has not happened yet.

• The future tense is always identified by the “helper” or “auxiliary” verb will.

• In the future tense, the verb always remains in the basic form, with the auxiliary “will” before the main verb.

• Example: (singular) The robot will dance.

(plural) The robots will dance.

• When the verb is in the active voice, it means that the action is being performed by the subject.

• Most sentences in the English language are formulated in the active voice.

• The active voice sentence follows the following rule:

SVO or Subject Verb Object

• Example: The boy pets the dog.

• When the verb is in the active voice, it means that the action is being received by the subject.

• Sentences in the passive voice are often identified by the use of the word “by” to identify who or what is performing the action.

• The passive voice sentence follows the following rule:

• Example: The dog is petted by the boy.
