PUBLIC LIBRARY Excellence in Service Since 1895

July/August 2013

A Note From the Director

On behalf of the Trustees and Staff of HKDPL, thank you for your support in approving our

operating budget for the fiscal year starting July 1st.

E-books continue to be the hottest topic in the publishing world, and it’s the #1 topic

discussed at library conferences as well. You may already know that you can borrow a

Kindle or Nook Color e-reader device from us. You may also know that you can download

e-books from HKDPL by following the DIGITAL DOWNLOADS link on our website. And you

may have noticed that many of today’s bestselling e-books are either not available from us,

or have long wait times. But do you know why that is?

Along with the other 46 libraries in the Ramapo Catskill Library System, we license our e-

books from the vendor Overdrive. Publishers have set up different restrictions on what

they’ll license to public libraries. Penguin does not distribute current front-list (bestselling)

titles. Harper Collins mandates that we must re-purchase a title once it’s been borrowed 26

times. And across the board, prices to public libraries are significantly higher than

consumer e-book pricing, sometimes as much as five times higher! It’s a real balancing act

to satisfy demand for digital titles against the demand for other formats. When a digital

book costs much more than the print version, and we get to own the print copy outright

rather than license it, how are the funds best spent? Do we support the advancing

technology or stick with tradition?

This is a subject that will not be going away any time soon and I will be sure to keep you

posted as things develop with e-book publishers and public libraries.

Move Over American Idol - HKDPL Senior Idol Has Returned!

Can you sing, play an instrument, do

magic, or tell jokes? Do YOU want to be

a star? Do you have what it takes to be

an HKDPL Senior Idol? Our Senior Idol

talent show, on October 17, is open to

people 55 years and older. All seniors are invited to

participate, any talent is welcome. There will be

celebrity judges and prizes for the winners. No

talent? Be a part of our audience! Registration is

open now and ends September 15. Register at the

Reference Desk. Please contact Karen Romaner at

786-3800 ext. 23 for more information.

Kay Freeman Scholarship Award

Congratulations to our library

page Julio Aristy, for being

awarded the Library’s Kay

Changes Coming to Adult Services

Watch out for some rearranging that will

be going on in the Adult Services area. We

are evaluating the books in our non-

circulating Reference collection, and

making many of them available for you to

check out. We are continually looking for older titles that

need to be updated or replaced, and for gaps in the

collection. We are considering putting the Reference and

circulating materials into one sequence, eliminating the

need to look in multiple places for the information you

need. Our hope is to get this done over the summer, so

please pardon any disorganization you encounter during

that time. The Adult Services staff is always available at the

desk to assist you. Our goal is to create more space for the

adult fiction collection, which is currently bursting out of the

space allotted to it. And don’t forget to take a look at our

Science Fiction and African American Fiction collections on

the entry level, as well as the Mystery section on the mid-

level near the public computers.
