COUNSELOR’s CORNER
Our Character trait this month is Respect. Respect means to show someone or something special attention and honor. Respect means to live by the golden rule; treat others the way you would like to be treated. It also means to do what is expected, caring for property and self, and using polite manners.
5th grade student leaders are working cooperatively to create a video presentation at
our October Hawk Talk to model what Respect looks like. We will also present our
monthly Character awards.
Be sure to ask your student about Space Invader and Mean Jean. These Unthinkables
pop up during recess and in the classroom. Space Invader makes the person’s body
move into other people’s space when others are not expecting it or do not want this.
Space Invader can be defeated by using Space Respector. Space Respector reminds
you to use the one-arm rule and put the brakes on getting to close to someone. Mean
Jean makes people say mean things, hurt others feelings, destroy other’s things and
insists on having things her way. Ways to defeat Mean Jean include: Use a Self-talk:
“Will this hurt someone’s feelings?” and treat others the way that I want to be treated.
Also use kind words rather than hurtful words.
In Guidance this month, we will be working on recognizing bullying vs. conflict. We will
learn the 3 R’s: Recognize, Refuse and Report. We will focus on treating other’s
respectfully and that kindness always wins.
