News and updates from some of our groups: Mah- jong Group: We regret it has been necessary to increase the fees for this group for the hire of the Havelock North Bridge Club rooms, from $25.00 to $35.00 as there has been a shortfall in expenses for this year. (Note: this equates to only 80c per person a week). We hope this will be understood by all and look forward to you renewing your membership and continuing to enjoy your games of Mah-jong. New members will be very welcome to join us and there is tuition available to those who are newcomers to the game or who wish to refresh their knowledge. Margaret has indicated that she will continue as Convenor for the coming year only and would very much like someone to step forward to help with the organisation of the group with a view to becoming a Convenor at a later date. Please consider offering your help as we do not want to lose your skills within our U3A organisation. Margaret Elliott, Convenor. Phone 877 7844 Geography Group The Geography group has continued in good spirits after the sadness of 3 deaths in the group earlier in the year. All members have been happy to make presentations and recently we have heard about Eritrea, Guadalupe, Nagaland and Washington State in the USA. Our last session for the year is in November and a Geography quiz is being planned with a yummy chocolate fish for the winners' prize! We regret there are no vacancies at this time, but please give your name to Trish Loye if you wish to go on a waiting list. Susan Fitzgerald & Jenny Cox, Co-Convenors. Phone 878 8749 (Susan) Photography Group We’ve tried out some quite difficult things this year but made progress and learnt a lot on the way. We have room for a couple more new members who will be welcome as long as they realise we are trying learn more about how to control how our cameras work and to create art works not just a snapshot. But it has been a lot of fun as well as stretching our minds, making us observe the world around us more closely as digital photography continues to evolve in differing directions. Meetings are at my home in Havelock North 2nd Friday of each month 1.30 to 3.30p.m. Sheila Bowden - Photography Group Rummikub Group Many thanks to Anne Mahon who has been running the Rummikub group for a number of years. She has resigned as Convenor but will continue to be a member of the group. Welcome to Val Galbraith who will be your new Convenor for 2016.

Cycling Group Bruce Allen has been your Convenor for the last three years but wishes to stand down next year. He would welcome someone to step up (or cycle up!) to take over the organisation of your meetings. Please – it is not difficult and Bruce would still be in the group to give advice when required. Many thanks to Bruce for his excellent skills over the last three years. Lunch Group 4. Many thanks to Betty Boyle who has been the Convenor of this group for some years, but she now wishes to have a break. We need someone to step forward and organise the Lunch outings on behalf of the group. I feel sure there is someone there who would love to choose your next dining place and outings. Please contact Betty or the Secretary, Trish Loye with your suggestions. Geology Group October 2015 The group has been studying the geology of N.Z. and how the land mass of Zealandia broke away from the ancient continent of Gondwanaland still attached to Australia and Antarctica. Then after a rift developed between NZ and Australia the Tasman Sea was formed and New Zealand; after much mountain building, erosion and volcanic activity; arrived at its present geological and geographical state. Trapped between the Pacific and Australian tectonic plates NZ is always dangerously close to further earthquakes and geological activity. The Alpine fault has moved 495 km sideways and 12 km upwards (worn down by erosion and glaciation) over the last 12 million years and still affects North and South Island. We will finish the year by studying the Geology of Hawkes bay with its sharply dipping beds of Limestone, Fossils, Siltstone, Greywackes and sandstone. Many of these structures can be seen in the cliffs from Clifton to Cape Kidnappers. 2015 has been an excellent year for Geology. Beginners are always welcome. Norris Kenwright, Convenor

We have been fortunate to secure a vibrant and interesting speaker for our meeting on the 19th November with Stephanie Drew who is a publisher and designer that helps people to write their memoirs and life stories. Stephanie has given us the following résumé which I am sure we will be interested in hearing her talk.

“A bit about myself - I am a freelance editor and book designer who has quite recently moved from Wellington to live in Hawke's Bay, while still working with clients around New Zealand. I provide a personalised service that helps people produce books that are appropriate for their content, whether poetry books, memoirs, children books or fiction. As well as this I am also involved in local theatre, and a keen gardener and sculptor. My life is currently ruled by two Burmese cats”.

Our next Annual General Meeting will be held on Thursday 11th February 2016. As our President, Joan Sye will have completed her 3 year term; we are required under the Constitution to elect a new President. At this time, we do not have any firm nominations and urgently request that all members give serious consideration to nominating someone from within your groups or friends to put a name forward. It is not arduous or time consuming, we are a friendly and co-operative bunch on the committee and would love to welcome a new face to be our leader.
