THE INDIANHEAD INSIGNIAIn mid-March 1918, Colonel Herringshaw, Service & Supply Support Commander, sent a memorandum to his forces

offering prize money for the best insignia design for his forces. He explained the design should be simple, easily distinguishable, not easily confused with other units, and have some special significance.

Rough sketches were due at Headquarters by noon on March 31st.

Sketches began to pour in and swamped the board responsible for selecting thebest design.After some debate, two winners emerged: an Indian head submitted

by Sergeant Louis Lundy, and a star designed by Sergeant John Kenny.

Fortunately, Colonel Herringshaw was not completely satisfied with the winning designs so he combined them, placing the Indian head on the star. He decided that a combination of the two made the best design.

In June 1920, it was directed that the insignia, a black shield with a white star and Indian head, be the official insignia worn by all 2nd Infantry Division personnel. It became a permanent part of the uniforms worn in the Division.
