Let’s talk about Nora – Nora has an interesting story and already has a large following of her own. She was born at Columbus Zoo but her keepers quickly became concerned when her mom rejected her. They made the difficult decision to step in and hand-raise Nora. After a while, they realized that Nora needed to be around other bears. So they sent her to Oregon Zoo where she was to be ‘mentored’ by Tasul, a gentle, senior bear. But that also was not meant to be as Tasul passed away shortly after Nora arrived. Again, Nora needed to be around other bears.

Nora

If you’ve been to the Zoo this summer, you’ve no doubt seen crews hard at work in the polar bear habitat. With hard hats on and fork lifts in place, they’ve reconfigured the land; built a new bear den (now we have two), added more shade structures, and enhanced the back-holding areas to make room for not one but TWO polar bears joining the Hogle Zoo family this fall.

Two females, Hope and Nora, will both be about 2 years old when they arrive at Hogle Zoo.

Enter Hope – Hope was born at Toledo Zoo and has been raised by her mom, Crystal. Named after Point Hope, Alaska, Hope is one month older than Nora so they both have the same youthful energy. In the wild, this is about the time a young bear’s mom would send them off on their own to fend for themselves. Young bears often couple up to increase their chances of surviving the harsh arctic climate.

Toledo Zoo is ready to breed mama Crystal again to further contribute to the population of this endangered species and Oregon Zoo is set to break ground on their new Arctic Passage exhibit. So, the two young bears will make their way to Salt Lake this fall and we couldn’t be more excited about it!

They’ll go through the customary 30-day quarantine period, which allows our veterinary staff to give them a thorough check-up, then our animal care crew takes over and introduces the girls slowly, making sure they have every opportunity to become best bear friends.

We’re not entirely certain when they’ll be swimming in their pool ready for visitors – that’s up to them. The keepers do not want to rush introductions so we’ll take our cues from Hope and Nora. In the meantime, we’re stocking up on all their favorite ‘toys’, we’re doing the necessary remodeling for our new residents and we can’t wait to share them with you!

Hope exploring her new exhibit at Utah’s Hogle Zoo!

Bringing the Zoo to 2nd Graders State-WideBY CHRIS SCHMITZ, DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION

iSEE programs are designed to spark students’ natural curiosity and sense of wonder by providing exciting opportunities to experience science, practice science skills, and gain a deeper understanding of science. We provide:

• Free, statewide, hands-on, inquiry-based outreach programs in schools

• Models of best practices in science education based on Utah science standards

• Free statewide professional development for teachers in our various areas of content expertise, including teaching resources and materials aligned to the state science standards

• Lesson plans and pre- and post-visit activities• Pre- and post-lesson assessments• Classroom materials• Curriculum kits• Accurate and up-to-date science information

How is iSEE funded?iSEE is funded in part by the Utah State Legislature, with monies administered through

Utah State Board of Education. For every tax dollar spent, iSEE partners provide at least a 1:1 matching contribution. To receive funding, each organization is required to provide outreach aligned to specific Utah science standards to every Local Educational Agency (LEA), including all district and charter schools in the state, in a three-year period. The Zoo is finishing the requirements of a provisional member this year and will be asking the legislature in 2018 to become a full member of iSEE beginning the 2018-19 schoolyear.

The Utah State Board of Education (USBE) has been designated as the fiscal agent responsible for administering the iSEE program based on Legislative funding. Any changes to iSEE funding are based on Legislative request. Every year the USBE reviews and approves the iSEE budgets for outreach and programming. A USBE specialist (generally the science specialist) works as administrator for iSEE and meets with organizations monthly to facilitate their collaboration towards meeting common goals.

The Zoo’s iSEE programThe Zoo’s standards-based Habitat Investigations outreach program is designed to be an exciting complement to what

teachers are doing in their classrooms to meet the state’s student intended learning outcomes for second grade. We visit one third of the state’s second graders every year. The 60-minute program focuses on students using science processing skills to explore two Utah habitats — wetlands and deserts. Students analyze an assortment of samples collected by the Zoo’s “research team.” Students make observations and inference, measure, collect data and share their results with classmates. They then observe living Utah animals and connect their ideas with the evidence, to make conclusions about the adaptations these animals possess to survive in their Utah habitats.

For those districts we are unable to reach in a given year, we offer free distance learning programming. One of the Zoo’s education team broadcasts live from the Zoo into the student’s classroom with the help of the Utah Education Network. This broadcast allows students to view live animals and biofacts as well as interact with our educator and cover the topics of adaptations and habitats via this live feed.

As part of our iSEE commitment, we also provide free Growing UP Wild workshops for teachers in the districts we are visiting. This nationally recognized curriculum provides teachers with ways to engage their students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math activities centered on outdoor exploration. To learn more about our program, distance learning and teacher workshops visit www.hoglezoo.org/education_programs/

Did you know that Utah’s Hogle Zoo is currently a provisional member of the Informal Science Education Enhancement (iSEE)? ISEE is a

collaboration among nonprofit informal science education organizations in Utah. It is currently comprised of Clark Planetarium, Discovery Gateway: The Children’s Museum of Utah, HawkWatch International, The Leonardo, Loveland Living Planet Aquarium, Natural History Museum of Utah, Red Butte Garden, Thanksgiving Point and Utah’s Hogle Zoo. Four million student and teacher experiences have been provided by iSEE in the last 10 years. Thirteen grades, K-12, are covered by the iSEE program. iSEE reaches every K-12 classroom in every public and charter school in Utah.

Utah’s Hogle Zoo is pleased to announce that it is bringing Red Pandas back! It’s been six years

since this popular animal, loved by so many, has been on display.

With their bushy tails for balance – which can be as long as their bodies – and claws for gripping, red pandas are definitely show-stopping acrobatic tree dwellers. Most of their time is spent in trees, and the red panda’s cinnamon red coat, occasionally saddled with orange or yellow, and soft cream-colored face mask give great camouflage among the red moss and white lichen that cover the tree trunks of their bamboo forest homes.

Trees are also used as a perch for sunbathing high in the forest canopy. You might see one at the Zoo stretched out on a tree branch or even rolled up in a tree hollow with its long tail covering its face.

The timing couldn’t be more important. Red Pandas have been classified as endangered and have

been designated as a Species Survival Plan (SSP) Program by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Their numbers have decreased by as much as 40% over the last 50 years - the most recent litter in the United States being born in 2006. Today the adult population is around 10,000 mature individuals and continues to decline, due to habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching and inbreeding depression.

That is one reason why we are excited to provide a new, safe environment for breeding opportunities at Utah’s Hogle Zoo. The young are born with thick buff and gray fur and with their eyes and ears tightly closed, so the protection of the den is very important. For the first 7 to 10 days after birth, the cubs’ only activity is nursing. They begin opening their eyes and ears at 2 to 3 weeks.

Zoos play a critical role in the survival of endangered species and allow people from all walks of life to experience and learn about the animal

world. Every Zoo believes its mission includes raising awareness about the challenges faced by animals. “We know animals have the power to touch our hearts, and when this happens, it opens the door to education that can inspire people to participate in protecting animals and conserving their environments,” says, Jack Hanna, Director Emeritus of the Columbus Zoo and the host of Jack Hanna’s Wild Countdown.

Scheduled to be dedicated in late Spring of 2018, the exhibit, which will have 1,500 square feet of habitat space and a total footprint of 2,800 square feet, will include special features such as viewing areas, walkways and trees and foliage. And, because Red Pandas thrive in cooler weather, to make their living space as comfortable as possible, cooling misters, a recirculating stream and cooled, air-conditioned areas.

Utah’s Hogle Zoo is passionate about saving wildlife – especially polar bears! Wildlife conservation is at the heart of everything with do and through the Zoo’s signature conservation programs, like polar bears, we focus our resources to make a greater impact.

A Long Term Commitment

Since 2007, we have been engaged in saving wild polar bears. Our colleagues studying bears were starting to see some alarming trends with polar bears and raised the alarm for conservation action and listed them under the Endangered Species Act in 2008. The decline of Arctic sea ice – their primary habitat – is their greatest challenge. To save the species, it is important to understand how the loss of sea ice is affecting them to shape policy around human activities and conservation strategies in the Arctic.

Maternal Den Studies in Alaska

The Zoo has been partnering with Brigham Young University and Polar Bears International to have a greater understanding in polar bear denning behavior. In addition to learning more about the specific requirements for the bears, through our long-term commitment we are learning how changes in the bears’ environment impacts their ability to successfully raise their young! This information is invaluable as the North Slope of Alaska is an important American polar bear denning area, it is also an area of growing human activity and shrinking sea ice.

Preventing Conflicts with People

As the sea ice shrinks, biologists anticipate that polar bears will be spending more time on land, coming in closer contact with human settlements. For the people living in the most northern communities, they are particularly vulnerable as their resources are stretched thin. This fall, the Zoo is partnering with Polar Bears International to launch a multi-year conservation study to test a new technology to alarm communities when polar bears are approaching their village.

Working with several Canadian partners, we will be installing the equipment in Churchill, Manitoba, a small community on the Hudson Bay. Polar bears and a small community of people have lived in Churchill for centuries – the challenge of living safely with bears is a daily struggle. The population of bears in this area is most vulnerable to loss of ice and biologists have been documenting the bears spending more time on shore in recent years. Our aim of this study is to develop tools to conserve bears by reducing conflict with people.

When asked why he has made a provision in his estate for Utah’s Hogle Zoo. Brandon Daniels replies, “The Zoo has provided a legacy. It brings four generations of memories. I think of my grandma, my mother, me and my siblings and now nieces, nephews and cousins. My hope is that the Zoo will be here for the next generation and the generation after that.”

What it really comes down to is “time.” Brandon’s philosophy is simple. “The only gift you can give a person is your time – time for making memories!”

His excitement, when it comes to Utah’s Hogle Zoo, is contagious. He has spent his 42 years coming to the Zoo, a large portion of which driving all the way from Twin Falls, Idaho. And – in all those years, Utah’s Hogle Zoo has not disappointed him. He has enjoyed “watching where the Zoo has been and where it is going.” He refers to the newest enclosures as “conservation habitats” and he uses every opportunity to talk about the choices we make to preserve the amazing creatures. But while he appreciates the new conservation and education messages, he always comes back to “memories.”

Why has Brandon chosen to give back to Utah’s Hogle Zoo in his estate? His answer, “I’m picky! The Zoo has proven to be good stewards of my money. I have been a member for years and I have loved being a part of the new openings and watching the way they treat the animals. They understand their mission – and live it.” Oh… and those “memories.”

Preschool Classesat the Zoo

Preschool is hosted once a month by our Education Department, and every month has a new theme. Each class includes a snack, a story and a take-home craft. You also get to meet some of our amazing education ambassador animals up close and personal and every class includes an activity outside of the classroom with the Zoo animals and their keepers.

Children registered for these classes must be between the ages of 3 – 5 by the date the class session begins. A parent or guardian must accompany their preschooler for great parent/kid time together. No older or younger siblings are allowed. This way we can spend all of our time and attention on your preschooler.

Have you taken yourpreschooler to a preschool

class at the Zoo yet?
