Stock Rout Accelerates; S&P Flirts
with Correction: Markets Wrap: -
The slide in U.S. stocks picked up speed,
with the S&P 500 Index briefly lapsing
into correction territory from its
September record high, as disappointing
reports from technology bellwethers
continue to weigh on sentiment.
Treasuries rallied and the dollar climbed
to a 17-month high.
FOREX-Dollar slides from 2-month
high as stock prices fall: - The U.S.
dollar slid alongside Wall Street on
Wednesday after having risen to a two-
month high in morning trade after U.S.
headline third-quarter gross domestic
product data exceeded estimates.
GDP increased at a 3.5 percent
annualized rate, the Commerce
Department said on Friday in its first
estimate, which boosted the dollar index
to a two-month high against a basket of
rival currencies. DXY . U.S. economy
slowed less than expected in the third
quarter as the strongest consumer
spending in nearly four years and a
surge in inventory investment offset a
tariff-related drop in soybean exports.
PRECIOUS-Gold jumps 1 % as
stocks slide triggers flight to safety:
- Gold rose nearly one percent to a more
than three-month peak on Friday as
investors rushed to the safety of the
bullion, driven by a plunge in stock
markets around the globe.
Oil heads for third weekly decline,
but Iran sanctions limit losses: - Oil
prices were little changed on Friday,
supported by expectations that
sanctions on Iran would tighten supplies,
but prices were headed for a weekly
drop as a slump in stock markets and
concerns about trade wars clouded the
fuel demand outlook.
