What’s Happening at Holy Spirit?

Children’s Liturgy of the Word

Children’s Liturgy of the Word will be on summer break July 7th through September 1st. CLW will resume Sunday, September 8, 2019. Have a blessed summer!

St. Vincent de Paul Special Collection | June 30

Our ministry has truly been blessed. With your continued support, we have been able to assist the needy in our community. This weekend’s special collection will help our ministry continue its mission of charity. On behalf of the neighbors who receive our help, we extend our heartfelt gratitude.

KidZone

KidZone is hiring! Applicants must be 18+ yrs. and have experi-ence working with preschool-age children. Work 1-2 Sundays each month, 8:30 am-2:00 pm. If you love working with kids and have a lot of energy, please contact Fran at 510.456.4974.

Welcome, Rev. John Carillo!

Fr. John Carillo is our new Parochial Vicar. He will officially join us on the first weekend of July. Fr. John was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Michael Barber, SJ, in May 2016. He was then assigned to St. Joseph Basilica in Alameda, working along-side Fr. George Alengadan, who was Fr. John’s priest mentor pri-or to ordination. Before being ordained, he served in various par-ishes and organizations in the Oakland Diocese, including: St. Ed-ward in Newark and St. Anthony in Oakley (with our very own Fr. Ken). Fr. John looks forward to serving here at Holy Spirit and meeting the spiritual needs of our community. We welcome you, Fr. John, to the Holy Spirit family!

July 4th Parade

Our parish will once again participate in Fremont’s Independence Day Parade. Show up with your ministry (red) banner, sport the Holy Spirit t-shirt and any patriotic accessories, and let’s have fun! Please don’t forget to wear comfortable shoes (we’ll be doing a lot of walking!) and drink lots of water.

Here’s the Sitch... We’re in the process of installing LED lighting in and around our parking lot. This will help ad-

dress safety issues and save energy.

Our parish staff is completing a state-required “Harassment and Discrimination” training.

This year, we are undergoing a Financial Review (which takes place every three years) through a private CPA firm. This is to ensure that proper accounting and lost prevention practices are being followed.

Sincerely, Fr. Ken

The Gospel According to Luke—9:51-62 I believe that today’s gospel talks about two poignant aspects of our lives as Chris-tians, as followers of Jesus. The first is the cost of discipleship. St. Luke portrays Jesus as setting forth very clearly the severity and the unconditional nature of discipleship. It is not a life of security and safety. A disciple must be willing to be always on the move. There is no home or place for a disciple. The urgency of discipleship does not allow for worldly kinds of attachments. This is not a reference to being poor or destitute: It signifies total detachment in the face of the demands of ministry. The second aspect is about proclaiming the kingdom of God. The mission of a disciple is to pro-claim the kingdom of God both in word and deed. Absolutely nothing can get in the way of that mis-sion. Even loyalties and the honor traditionally owed to one’s family must be forsaken. This includes such serious obligations as burying a dead parent or bidding one’s family farewell. In a culture of honor and shame, these requirements for discipleship would have been shocking. Discipleship is a full and total commitment. Once a commitment is made, there is no turning back for any reason. The model to be followed for all this is Jesus himself.

From the Desk of Fr. Ken...

Giuseppe Moscati, “the holy physician of Naples,” was a medical doctor and layman in the early twentieth century who came from an aristocratic family and devoted his medical career to serving the poor. He was also a medical school professor and a pioneer in the field of biochemistry whose research led to the discovery of insulin as a cure for diabetes. Moscati regarded his medical prac-tice as a lay apostolate, a ministry to his suffering fellowmen. Giuseppe Moscati died in 1927 at forty-six years old, was beatified in 1975, and declared a saint by Pope John Paul II in 1987. His feast day is November 16.
