Woman’s Outreach Chair & Program Approved Woman’s Outreach Chair & Program Approved By Kenneth Crawford By Kenneth Crawford

Part of national TU’s strategic objectives are to grow the female and youth membership base. In an effort to attract and retain more women into the chapter, the PWWTU Board of Directors created a new position entitled “Women’s Outreach Chair” and unanimously

elected Leah Eggers into this role.

We have had significant interest from female trout fisherman who are new to the area, or just starting out and looking for guidance. As you have probably noticed, we get an occasional female in attendance at our monthly meetings. But those in at-tendance usually only show up one time and are never heard from again, likely due to the fact they are such a minority.

Leah will be working to establish a core group of female anglers in the chapter, to organize women’s focused outings, and to be a voice on the board of directors to help the chapter grow in this direction. She participated as part of the Women’s Panel discussion led by Earl Morgan at this year’s Cabin Fever.

Leah commented, “Because women have the ability to become great anglers, we are seeking to support them in that growth. The panel discussion revealed some of the ways we can help get female anglers involved in TU. And, I’m excited for the opportunity to expand this part of our chapter.”

Be on the lookout for women’s outreach events coming this spring. Also, if you know of any female an-

glers who are interested in participating in the chapter, please let Leah know at: [email protected]

Monroeville Sportsman’s Show Monroeville Sportsman’s Show By Kenneth Crawford By Kenneth Crawford

You may not have made it out to look at the lions, pick up some free chewing tobacco pouches, fish in the

trout pond, or see Earl Morgan or Ron Milavec speak. Attendance did seem off at the Monroeville

Sportsman’s Show this year. Blame it on the weather. However, this was the first year that our booth was

fully staffed (well, of course except for Sunday, when everyone was working at Cabin Fever).

It is important that we are at this show because of the advertising opportunity it is for us for Cabin Fever.

Special thanks go to Earl Morgan, Gary Deily, Dick Packer, Rich Simmen, Tom Walsh, and especially -

Mike Bradley, Ron Milavec, and Richard Yurko, who manned the booth multiple days.

Thanks Guys!

The past two Barflies have been low in attendance. In January we had only one brave soul drive through

the snow. February’s was the day after Cabin Fever so perhaps people needed a break, still five of us

came out to tie our favorite patterns.

We would like to have a great turnout however, as the spring season starts out,

and the weather takes a turn. Come on out to Grazie! on Monday March 23 and

Monday April 27 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm to enjoy some good conversation, share

stories, tie flies, and get out of the house!

Treasurer’s Update: Treasurer’s Update: 2015 Fundraising 2015 Fundraising

By Kenneth Crawford, Treasurer By Kenneth Crawford, Treasurer

Our 2015 fundraising season was yet another great success. Our net income for our fundraising events

was over $10,000 for the third straight year. Of course, Cabin Fever was the lion’s share of the income,

with over 700 in attendance.

The Rod Raffle, Print Raffle, and Great Fly Sale brought in close to $1,200 gross income. Overall, the

chapter has close to $37,000 in the bank. We are also liquidating a stagnant money market fund account

in March, which will add $5,200 in liquid funds for use in conservation activities. The fact that we are in a

great financial position is the result of a lot of hard work by many of you. Thanks for your efforts!

I’m sure you’ve noticed that TU sends out a blizzard of renewal notices. Somehow, they think that this

waste of paper and money allows them to “capture” as many renewals as possible.

If you want to stop this nonsense and yet maintain your TU membership without interruption, please con-

sider becoming a “Preferred Member.” I did this recently, and it was easy. I even added a donation to my

membership dues.

Thanks from WPA Casting For Recovery Thanks from WPA Casting For Recovery By Briget Shields, WPA CFR Director of Fly FishingBy Briget Shields, WPA CFR Director of Fly Fishing

We are so very grateful to PWWTU for providing a table for us at this year’s Cabin Fever and for asking Briget Shields to be on the panel discussion to introduce CFR to the people attending the discussion.

Each year WPA CFR provides a 3-day, 2-night fly fishing retreat for 14 breast cancer patients. The entire event is free of charge to the participants, and our group is responsible for fundraising the amount needed to host the retreat. This year our 7th annual CFR retreat will be held in August.

At Cabin Fever we were able to reach out to many interested people and pass out a lot of our literature and information. It is because of organizations like PWWTU that we are getting the word out about CFR, and talking with folks about what we do. Thank you again for the opportunity to have another successful event introducing CFR to the many people who stopped by our table.

Many thanks and tight lines!

In January, we began feeding our trout fry the pepper flakes. Each “Trout Team” was responsible for checking the tank temperature and dispersing the trout food, being sure that all the fry got a chance to eat.

Later on in the month, we lowered the hatching basket to allow the fry to swim freely within the aquarium.

JANUARY 2015

TROUT IN THE CLASSROOM OVERVIEW

The project began in November of 2014. The Second Graders of McKnight Elementary (North Allegheny) placed 300 brook trout eggs into our classroom tank hatching basket. Since then, we’ve been observing the life cycle of the trout from stage to stage. The trout will soon be ready to release into North Park Lake/Pine Creek. The date is set for Saturday, March 28th at 1:00 pm by the Latrobe Pavilion near the North Park Boathouse. There, we will culminate our TIC project by releasing our finny friends.

(Look for more details on our Trout in the Classroom 2014-2015 project in the next issue of Hatches & Rises. By then, our trout will be released successfully!)

In February, the trout grew their “parr marks” and took their places within the classroom tank.

They positioned themselves into the runs, riffles, and pools in our tank currents.

If it wasn’t for my late cousin who lived in Grand Junction, Colorado, I would not have been able to expand my fly fishing experiences to include streams out West. Sometimes I would take his Subaru and drive to close rivers such as the Gun-nison, Uncompahgre and the Colorado River. There I would fish by myself. My cousin was a great outdoorsman but had no urge to learn fly fish-ing. Other times he would take me by horse into the San Juan Mountains to fish mountain lakes. We once took his ATVs fourteen miles back on Grand Mesa to fish a brook trout stream, complete with cattle grazing in the high meadows. Best of all, he took me with his camper truck from Grand Junction to Rocky Mountain National Park. I fished the Colorado River along the way and in the park. I will always be grateful for the opportunities he gave me when I visited him.

One evening, while we were talking about where I wanted to go next, my cousin showed me a book he had. It was a book about all the trout streams in Colorado. It had all the necessary information and most important of all where you could gain public access. I had turned to a page about the Frying Pan River. I then remembered that last year at home someone had told me about it. Also last year we drove by the stream on our way to Aspen to help repair a trail with Roaring Fork Outdoor Volun-teers of which my cousin was a member. So the decision was made to try this stream.

Once again, I borrowed the Subaru and headed out the next morning for a day trip to the Frying Pan River. It was about a two hour drive. After you exit the interstate you drive north on a busy four lane highway from Glenwood Springs to the turn off. The highway was crowded and full of tractor trailers belching their smelly, sooty exhaust. I thought of John Denver and was this what he meant by “Rocky Mountain High?” Also there was a bus line along the highway with stops running from Glenwood Springs to Aspen. My cousin said the workers in Aspen could not afford to live there so the city ran busses to Glenwood Springs where housing was affordable. So much for progress. Everyone crowding in, wanting to stake out a small piece of the “not so wild anymore” outdoors for themselves whether rich, poor, or commuting.

After turning off the highway and driving along the Frying Pan, you see signs offering to sell maps of the public access points along the river. I now un-derstand how very different it is out west to gain access compared to being in Pennsylvania. We are sort of spoiled here, not as much posted land and the ability to talk to landowners for permission to fish. Out there the people are only rarely on their property and almost all of it is posted. I did stop at one spot where I saw a most unusual sign. It said, “Fishermen welcome!” At least someone was will-ing to share the beauty of the land.

Finally, I arrived at the base of the dam on the low-er section of the river where there was plenty of access. The area below the dam was called the toilet bowl because of the swirling water. It wasn’t my idea of a place to fish in Colorado.

So I walked down past the first bend, crossed and started fishing on the inside of the bend towards the opposite bank. I met two guys from the mid-west. They were friendly and gave me some point-ers on where to go after this spot. I was glad to meet them. I didn’t know how friendly people would be. The encounter reinforced my belief that the fly fishing community was a rather friendly fraternity. Only later I would learn that not everyone wanted to join the fraternity. Much to my chagrin.

There were only a few people on the stream where I was. There was not much fish catching activity as well. The water was clear and I could see a few fish above me. Not knowing anything about Colora-do insects and being a novice at fly fishing I decid-ed to use a tan caddis dry fly. I attracted one brown trout’s attention, hooked and released him. I felt lucky considering almost no one else was having any luck.

Fishing just above me farther out in the stream was a gentleman with a large white cowboy hat on and a lit cigarette dangling from his lower lip. I assumed he was a local and would have bet the house on his waders being pointed like cowboy boots. We acknowledged one another with a wave.

(...Continued from Page 12)

After a few casts I heard a rustling behind me and an older woman appeared from the bank with rod in hand. She was from the area and we struck up a conversation. She was a very nice person. She wished me luck and decided to go up stream to try her luck.

After casting to an uncooperative trout for about ten minutes I heard this faint but audible yelling from way up stream. I thought, boy someone caught a nice one. I turned back around and continued to cast. All of the sudden, I heard this crashing through the brush and who appeared but the wom-an who I had spoken to. She was wild-eyed and out of breath. “ I…I..I was fishing, minding my own business when this giant bear came running down the hill. He..he crossed the stream and ran past me only a few feet away!!! He scared me to death!! I could have been killed!” I was about to offer some empathy, but then I noticed the guy in the cowboy hat had turned to the woman.

In a slow gravel like voice (think Johnny Cash) he said, “Better you than me.” Well, the look on that lady’s face was priceless. Her jaw had dropped and her eyes were as big as saucers! I lost it. I started to laugh and couldn’t stop. She looked at us, mut-tered something and left. Never to be seen again. The fisherman in the cowboy hat looked at me, shrugged his shoulders, turned and continue to fish. I laughed again and kept on chuckling to my-self for the rest of the day. Later I landed one more brown trout and called it a day.

Later that evening, back at my cousin’s house, I told him about this encounter. My cousin, with his own dry wit, enjoyed my day’s adventure.

Whenever I think about my visits with my cousin, this funny experience always comes to my mind.

You might have noticed that PWWTU’s leadership hasn’t changed in sever-al years. Many of its Officers and Board members have worked long and hard in Penn’s Woods West’s fields year after year harvesting an abundant crop of chapter excellence; but as in all things, time has taken its toll which has resulted in several opportunities for other members to step forward and volunteer their service to the chapter. Some already have, but more are needed.

The Board of Directors have recently nominated and approved several leadership positions in the chapter. Dale Fogg has been active for several years, and recently took on the duties of Vice President. Chuck Buffington has recently volunteered as Membership Chair and is focused on improving member engage-ment. Leah Eggers has volunteered as Women’s Outreach Chair to make our chapter more accommo-dating to female members and help it grow in diversity. The chapter is grateful to all three of these newly elected and enthusiastic members who serve on the Board. Now there is an urgent need for others to vol-unteer their assistance and energy so that the chapter’s yearly harvest of excellence continues.

While we have had several folks take on new responsibilities, we still need more help. Dale Fogg has organized the last three Cabin Fever events and has served as Program Chair for the past several years. (For those of you who are unaware, the Program Chair is the person who arranges all the speakers) With the added responsibility of VP, he is relinquishing the Program Chair position. Christian Shane has served for the past several years as the Editor of Hatches and Rises. He has brought the newsletter a long way – he not only was instrumental on putting the newsletter online, reducing our publishing costs by $7,000 per year, but in 2012, H&R won the National TU Bollinger Award for Best Newsletter. He will be assuming other duties within PWWTU.

Walter Reineman has long served with distinction as Chapter President. He has well earned the right to step aside and turn over the presidential duties and management of the chapter to a new volunteer. Likewise, Treasurer Ken Crawford has administered the chapter’s financial affairs for several years and he would greatly appreciate a volunteer replacement so that he can serve in another role. Other areas and activities where new faces would be welcomed are the Bar Flies Coordinator (we could do a lot

more with this program) and a coordinator for our annual Holiday Raffle.

Although our chapter’s history is rich in achievements, there is always the need for new people to bring in new ideas and (GASP!) even better ones about how to make PWWTU more appealing, exciting and re-

warding for its members. You could be one of those people.

So consider volunteering for one of the open Officer positions or as a Board member. Officers and Board members phone numbers are listed on Page 2. Contact any of them for more information or to offer your service to the chapter. Not to worry; the current leaders will always be on hand to help you with the duties and responsibilities of your new position.
