HastkalaHandicrafts - Rural Development
AIESEC Baroda
Baroda(Vadodara) has a rich historical background. It is situated on the banks of the river
Vishwamitri. The city was once called Chandravati, after its ruler king Chandan, then Viravati, the
abode of the brave, and then Vadpatra because of its abundance of Banyan trees on the banks
of the Vishwamitri. From Vadodara the Britishers named it as Baroda. Baroda is on the major rail
and road arteries joining Mumbai with Delhi and Mumbai with Ahmedabad. Because of this
Baroda is known as a “Gateway to the Golden Corridor”. National highway no.8 passes through
the city. It also has an airport which is very well connected with the other major airports of India.
Public transport vehicles within the city include rickshaws(tuk-tuk), taxis and buses. Of course,
people make use of their own vehicles- cars, scooters, bikes and bicycles.
ABOUT BARODA
Vadodara is also known as ‘Sanskari Nagari’, i.e. Cultured City. Vadodara is one of India’s most
cosmopolitan cities. Thanks to the vision and broadmindedness of the Gaekwads, the
subsequent industrialization, the proliferation of academic activities and a strategically
important geographical location, Baroda has welcomed a wide variety of people from all over
India and also from all over the world. In all of this, the sprawling and cosmopolitan MS
University campus and the large number of local, national and foreign industries act as a
catalyzing and unifying force.
The great museums on the palace grounds such as the Maharaja Fateh Singh Museum and art
gallery are unique and carry artifacts from around the nation and the world. There are Gujarati
film studios in the city as well as a large number of large old-style movie theatres in addition to
the newer multiplexes that have sprung up in the past few years.

THE I S SUE : SOC I A LENTREPRENEURSH I P ANDBUS INES S DEVE LOPMENT
India has millions of social businesses and entrepreneurs working independently in small towns
and villages. Talking about the handicrafts industry, it has been exponentially growing in the
past few years, but due to the growing competitive producers in Europe, South Asia and South
Africa, there is threat posed towards the Indian producers. The reason for this is that Indian
handicrafts industry produces goods with inconsistent quality, unplanned market strategising,
inability to meet timelines, lack of microfinance, inadequate infrastructure, etc.
The aim of this project is to try and promote social businesses like these to not only meet local
demands but also try and meet international demands.
- The EPs will be working with a group of women that work in the field of handicrafts.
This will also involve a lot of work with the locals in the city and the nearby village work
stations.

crafts of the organisation.

organisation not only design wise but in documentation and processes as well.

relevant subjects in order to find out the problems, loopholes and to get to know the
reality of the market. The first week will involve getting familiar with the city,
organisation and its realities.
- WEEK 2: After doing the survey and getting familiar with the realities, they will start
working on the issues at hand. They will start working with the organisation at required

organisation where they will be meeting relevant people or clients as per requirement in
the succeeding weeks.
