SEPTEMBER 9, 2018 : THE 23RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST CATHOLIC CHURCH
As we begin this school year, our Faith Formation year also begins. Many of
you and your school-aged children are likely feeling emotions similar to mine.
However, before we all claim to be too busy, I invite us all to reflect on this
question: What does it mean to do ministry? How do we act as disciples, lead-
ers, and Christ to others?
Before attempting to answer this question, I want to start first with a definition
of pastoral leadership. Hersey and Blanchard, in their Management of Organi-
zational Behavior, define it in this way:
Leadership is the process of influencing the activities of an individual or group
in the efforts towards accomplishing goals in a given situation.
Hold onto this. Moving towards ministry, Kathleen Cahalan, an associate pro-
fessor at the School of Theology defines ministry as “the leadership of the
Christian community through the ministries of teaching, preaching, worship,
pastoral care, social justice, and administration” and as a verb: “it’s some-
thing people do.” So in other words, simply going to church each Sunday, at-
tending faith formation classes, completing our work and engaging in our oth-
er extracurricular activities (eat, sleep, repeat) is not all that we are called to
do. Cahalan offers a challenging reminder to act in a way that embodies the
teachings of Christ in our every action and deed. To evangelize is a critical
part of this ministry, and leads me to ask yet another question: how, in our
words and actions, do we teach our young people and draw them to the
faith and encourage them to live out lives of faith? This is a never-ending pro-
cess.
The context of our world matters. We cannot claim to be too busy. To be
leaders in ministry and teaching means we work towards a communal goal of
being a people who welcome, encourage, teach, learn, ask questions, eat,
sleep, repeat. This may provoke an emotional response: excitement or anxie-
ty, perhaps, and to that, I say: GOOD. This is the spark we need to get started.
