In2009,theUniversityofPaviaintroducedthe‘HarveyCourse’asthefirstmedicalcourseinItalytaughtentirelyinEnglish

TheHarveyCoursearisesfromtheneedforaninternational(i.e.Englishlanguage)medicalschoolinItaly.Thecurriculumcombinesthelong-establishedItalianteachingmethodswiththemodernparadigmsofinteractivelearning.Harveytraineesevolveintowell-roundeddoctorsthroughanewwide-rangingprogramofstudyandagooddealofpracticaltraininginthelaboratoryandintheclinic.Thisincludesarigorousandpracticalseminarprogram.Harvey’scarefullyselectedlecturersaretopofthelinescientistsandclinicians.Thelecturersdelivercutting-edgescienceinahighlyintegratedandinterestingmanner.Thesespecialistshaveallloggedinlonghoursofreal-worldexperience

throughteachingandresearchinItalyand/orinEnglishspeakingcountriessuchastheUSAorUK.Ourgoalistotraindoctorswhoareawareofthemostadvancedmedicaltechnologiesbutequallyconsciousthatdiseaseisgreatlyimpactedbylocalsocialandeconomicfactors.Futurephysiciansmustbeabletocustomizecaretofiteachsituation,clinicorcountryinordertoprovidethebestavailableindividualcare.OpportunitiesawaittheHarveygraduate.Uponcompletion,thereare40differentspecializationschoolstochoosefrom.Research,teachingandmedicaltrainingareofferedatseveralclinicsinPavia’shospitals&institutes.

CourseCalendarThesingle6-yearcourseencompassespre-clinicalandclinicalsubjects.ItultimatelyresultsinaDegreeinMedicineandSurgery.Theacademiccalendarisorganizedintotwo13-weeksemestersusuallyfromSeptembertoJuly:11weeksforcoursedelivery,1forrevisionand1forexams.Pre-clinicalTrainingThefirstthreeyearsprovideastrongfoundationinscientificmethodologyandrecentmedicaladvances,notablyfrommolecularstudiesoflivingsystemsanddiseaseprocesses.Thesyllabusincludesstandardkeysubjects(figure)andseveralnewcoresubjectsthatwidenthestudent’sunderstandingofthescopeandchallengesofmodernmedicine.Lecturesemphasizethathealthpromotionanddiseasecontroldependsbothonadvancesinmedicalscienceaswellassocialpolicy.Additionally,studentsengageinpracticallaboratory-basedworkinordertodevelopastrongscience-basedapproachtomedicine.

ClinicalTrainingThestudymaterialsbuildonmodernandrigorousprinciplesofclinicalscienceforbetterdiagnosisandbettertreatment.Clinicaltrainingincludeseffectivecommunicationwithpatientsandstaff,accurateclinicalhistoriesandphysicalexaminations,andimproveddifferentialdiagnosisbyinterpretationofadditionaldata(imaging,laboratory-based,proteomics,etc).Withanemphasisonpersonalizedprecisionmedicine,clinicallecturersblendtheoreticalandpracticalknowledgetoengageinsystematiccase-baseddiscussionsandofferstronginternshipprogramsguidedbythestudents’needs,aspirationsandchoices.Thecourseencouragesacriticalapproachtomedicineandtimelyfeedbackinacomprehensiveandconstructivemanner.TheHarveycoursehostsgrandroundsandspecialtyseminarstoportraythelatestavailableevidence-basedpractices.Thisbuildsastrongfoundationforlife-longlearningofbasicscience,clinicalresearchandmedicalpractice.
