Harvest Baptist School In 1976 Harvest Baptist Church began the

ministry of Harvest Baptist School, a traditional Baptist school that exists to encourage and assist families commited to fulfilling the biblical mandate to provide a Christian education for their children (Proverbs1:7). The purpose of HBS is to provide thorough academic instruction from a biblical worldview, help students develop socially by teaching patriotism and respect for authority, and encourage students spiritually by emphasizing one’s personal accountability to God while developing the mind of Christ.

Statement of FaithHarvest Baptist School, as a ministry of

Harvest Baptist Church, believes and teaches the doctrines of the Christian faith as embraced by the historic, biblical, Baptist position.

We believe in the divine inspiration of the Scriptures, the triune God, the fallen nature of man and his just condemnation, salvation by grace through faith, the free gift of God, the necessity of repentance and faith wrought by the Holy Spirit, the glorious display of God’s purpose and grace, the progressive work of sanctification, the keeping power of God, the harmony of the law and the gospel, the prominence of immersion and the ordinance of the Lord’s Supper, the devout observance of the first day of the week, the honoring of civil government, the resurrection of the righteous to eternal life and the wicked to eternal damnation, and the imminent, personal, pre-tribulation, pre-millennial return of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Bible StandardThe King James Version is the only Bible

used in HBS classes, and is used each day by all students. All students K5 through 12th grade must keep a Bible at the school.

Educational Objectives = We will endeavor to lead students to a saving

knowledge of Jesus Christ, and teach them to develop attitudes of love and respect for God’s inspired Word, the Bible.

= We will endeavor to develop a desire in each student to know and obey the will of God, strive to fully prepare them for the work of the ministry (Eph. 4:11-12), and encourage them to attend a Bible or Christian college for at least one year.

= We will help students develop the mind of Christ, teach how to overcome sin, and encourage to develop self-discipline and responsibility.

= We will encourage a love and honor for home and parents.

= We will provide students with developing skills to make a living.

= We will give every student a solid academic foundation and Christian training, both with a Biblical World View.

AssociationsHarvest Baptist School is a member of the Georgia

Association of Christian Schools (GACS), and the American Association of Christian Schools (AACS). HBS will soon begin the process of selecting an accrediting agency and following their guidelines so that we may attain a status of accreditation.

Admissions Harvest Baptist School makes no distinction in the

admission of students based on race, gender, nationality, or ethnic origin. As a private, Christian institution, admission to HBS is a privilege rather than a right. This privilege may be forfeited should a student fail to meet his responsibilities.

Although HBS makes no distinction in the admission of students, at this time, we are not equipped to offer services to students with substantial learning disabilities.

All new students are conditionally admitted for a nine week trial period so the administration may observe the child’s progress. If acceptable progress is not attained, the parents may be asked to place the childinalowergrade, orfindaschoolbettersuitedto meet their child’s needs.

Pre-registrationPre-registration begins the first Monday in

February and continues to the First Monday in March. A Completed application and paid registration fee for the next school year are required.

Code of ConductHigh School Students are required to sign a

Standard of Conduct. All parents will also sign the Standard of Conduct

acknowledging that they are ultimately responsible to see that their child abides by the standards set forth; indicating to the school their willingness to support the school in all endeavors.

Younger students are not required to sign a conduct agreement, but are required to follow the Standard of Conduct as well. As a member of HBS you agree to uphold a high standard of conduct as a representative of Jesus Christ and HBS. At any time if that testimony is harmed, your child will be asked to withdraw from the school.

Re-admissionThe records of currently enrolled students will be

reviewed annually to determine their status. Students will only be re-admitted based on a satisfactory record in academic subjects, conduct, and spiritual growth.

Communicable DiseasesWhile HBS does not discriminate against any

child, a safe learning environment must be provided for students. This includes protecting students from exposure to communicable disease. In the best interests of both sick and well children, it is our policy not to accept students diagnosed with a communicable or potentially lethal disease. This policy includes, but is not limited to, diseases such as syphilis, gonorrhea, tuberculosis, and acquired

Admissions

Harvest Baptist School reserves the right to not define acceptance or denial criteria for studentsseeking entrance into HBS (including but not limited to those with severe academic issues, or rebellious attitudes toward the standard of conduct and discipline).

Church AttendanceA strong, Christ-honoring home and faithful

attendance to a Bible-preaching church are vital elements for a Christian education. Every family with students enrolled in HBS must agree to have their children in a Bible preaching church each week. Students are encouraged to serve in a local church ministry.

Placement TestingApplicants to HBS, other than pre-school and

kindergarten, will be required to satisfactorily pass a placement test ($25.00 test fee) in one or more subjects. Test results will be mailed within fivebusiness days of the testing.

Interview and Trial Period In addition to the entrance exam results,

prospective parents and students are required to schedule an interview with the administrator. Following the interview, the decision will be mailed withinfivebusinessdaysoftheinterview.

The following information must be submitted before an enrollment decision can made:

= Completed application form = Copy of the most recent report card or

school transcript = State-certified copy of the child’s birthcertificate

= Georgia Immunization Form = Signed standard of conduct code (grades

9-12 only) = Your pastor’s Recommendation Letter

(grades 9-12 only)

opportunity to help the child. Homework assignments must be completed and

handed in on the day designated by the teacher. Students are required to write their assignments in a notebook assigned for that purpose. Parents should check to see that all homework is completed and all books are returned to the classroom.

Concerned parents will understand when we say that the real price paid to help ensure that the best education possible for their child is not the tuition paid in the office, but rather the time spent eachevening helping them with their homework.

Report CardsReport cards are issued at the end of each nine-

week grading period. Parents and students can monitor students’ daily progress through RenWeb’s ParentsWeb, the on-line communication program utilized by HBS (for more information go to our school website www.hbsga.org).

PromotionElementary students may not be promoted if they

fail two core subjects (language, math, reading, and spelling), or if they fail one core subject and earn a “D” in the other two core subjects. Students who fail one core subject and earn a grade higher than a “D” in at least one of the other core subjects may be promoted but must receive Academy-approved tutoring in the failed subject. Tutoring must include a minimum of 12 hours of instructional time after whichthestudentmustpassaproficiencytestinthesubject for the appropriate grade level.

Students in grades 7–8 must pass all major subjects (language, math, science, and history) for the year to be promoted to the next grade. Students who fail one or more of these subjects and students who earn a “D” in language or math must complete an approved summer school course or tutoring scheduleinthedeficientsubject(s).

It is the responsibility of the administration to determine when it is appropriate to promote or retain a student outside of the above criteria. These exceptions are at the discretion of the administration and at no time should be taken to constitute a precedent or a change of policy.

HBSreservestherighttomakeallfinaldecisionsnecessary to enforce its communicable disease policy and to take all necessary action to control the spread of communicable diseases within the school.

AcademicsThe program of HBS places a strong emphasis on

academic fundamentals. All students in kindergarten through 11th grade are administered the Stanford Achievement Test each spring. Student scores are included in the AACS national testing program as well as in the national norms. All subjects are taught in light of biblical truth.

FacultyAll faculty members of HBS are dedicated

Christians who serve faithfully in the Harvest Baptist Church and are approved by the Pastor of Harvest Baptist Church and the Administrator of Harvest Baptist School. Each member of our faculty has demonstrated scholastic achievement and possesses abachelor’sdegreeorbeyondandarecertifiedwiththe GACS and AACS.

Curriculum The curriculum for all grades has been structured

so that the students will receive training in all academic subjects required by the State of Georgia. All subjects are taught from a biblical world view. Social development is encouraged through the teaching of good manners, high moral standards, respect for parents and authority, and patriotism. HBS uses curriculum from A Beka Book Publications, Bob Jones Press, Rosetta Stone, and Positive Action for Christ.

HomeworkHBS believes that homework is vital to a

student’s development academically by stimulating independence and self-direction, reinforcing learning through practice, and acquainting parents with the child’s learning by affording them an

AttendanceThere is probably no factor more important

to successful school progress than regular school attendance. Students who are absent excessively will fall behind in academic achievement and may lead to grade failure, loss of interest, or even result in students withdrawing from school.

HBS reserves the right to retain a student who accumulates too many absences at the same grade level.

Attendance RequirementsA student accumulating sixteen or more absences

in an annual course or eight or more absences in a semester course will have their final grade(s)withheld pending a review by the administration.

Students will be counted in attendance only if they are actually present or are engaged in a school-approved educational activity which constitutes a part of the instructional program.

Excused absences or tardies will only be granted for the following reasons:

Detentions are served on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30pm - 4:30pm. After School Care charges apply for students held in detention (see page 19, 22).

Disciplinary actionsThe following are procedures and consequences

for the issuing of disciplinary actions in 5th through 12th grade.

1. Students will receive two verbal warnings before a detention will be given. When the second warning is given a student they will be reminded that the next action will result in a detention.

2. When a student receives a detention parents willbenotifiedofboththeoffenseandthedateitisto be served.

3. The accumulation of 3 detentions in a semester will result in a one-day in-house suspension, served at the school.*

4. The accumulation of 6 detentions in a semester will result in a three-day at-home suspension.*

5. The accumulation of 9 detentions in a semester may result in expulsion from Harvest Baptist School.**

OffensesThe following are offenses that lead to disciplinary

action. = Locker violation (disorderly locker ) = Unexcused tardy (after 1st hour class) = Unexcused absence (exceptions may be made

for absences when advance arrangements are madethroughtheschooloffice)

= Unprepared for class (supplies, assignments) = Talking/disturbing class = Crude or inappropriate language = Disrespect toward faculty = Dress code violation = Unauthorized use of electronic devices

(mobile phones, PDA’s, electronic games, iPods, etc. are not allowed on campus for student use)

For violations in the following areas, HBS holds a ZERO TOLERANCE policy. Discipline resulting from these offenses are at the discretion of the administration, ranging from multiple detentions to legal action:

= Reckless driving on campus = Vulgarity / profanity

Conduct

Conduct & DisciplineThe desire of the administration and faculty of

HBS is to develop and to nurture an atmosphere of discipline and pleasantness. The Bible clearly states, “Train up a child in the way he should go...” (Proverbs 22:6).

Discipline is not simply punishment for wrong attitudes or actions. It is the biblical, loving correction that leads to a change in thought and behavior. Discipline is administered in an effort to instill in students a personal accountability to God for their attitudes and actions. Open communication between the teacher and the home is vital.

Teachers have the authority necessary to properly manage the classroom, and questions concerning discipline should be directed to the classroom teacher, and if the situation warrants, the administration will assist in any matter.

The form of correction may vary depending on the nature and severity of the situation.

Discipline may include one or more of the following:

= Scriptural counseling = Parent-teacher conference = Suspension or expulsion from school

Pre-K through 4th GradeThe elementary school years are critical to the

development of good habits and discipline in young people. Good manners and appropriate conduct will be emphasized. Most discipline problems are minor and will be handled by the classroom teacher. Continued discipline problems or those of a more serious nature may be referred to the administrator.

5th through 12th GradeIn upper elementary (grades 5–6), junior high

(grades 7–8), and high school (grades 9–12) a detention system is utilized. Detentions will be issued and upon accumulation there may be cause for more serious disciplinary action. Detentions are accrued on a semester basis and become a part of the student’spermanentfile.Disciplinereportsmayalsobe viewed on ParentsWeb.

Before suspensions, parents will be called in for a consultation with the administrator and the student and will be advised of the actions being taken.

*Suspensions will be served either in-house (1 day suspension at school) or at home (3 day at-home suspension). During suspensions students may not be allowed on school premises (3 day at-home suspension), will not be allowed to participate in extra-curricular activities, and will receive a 0 for all graded work completed during those days. Students receiving a suspension will not be eligible for Honor roll or Honor Society.

During this time the student may appeal, but must do so in writing and submit their appeal before the faculty and administration. Application for re-enrollment must be reviewed by the administration.

Standards of Dressand Appearance

The biblical principle underlying all standards of appearance is modesty. This not only applies to common decency but to the matter of calling undue attention to oneself as well. An appearance that makes a person a public spectacle is as inappropriate for the Christian as clothing that calls inappropriate attention to the body. The clothing and grooming of

Chapel&Special MeetingsThe preaching of the Word of God is essential

for the health of the school. HBS has weekly Chapel services, and parents are encouraged to attend. The school staff conducts Chapel, but we regularly invite preachers from other churches of like faith and practice. Chapel attendance and participation is mandatory of all students.

HBS is a ministry of Harvest Baptist Church, so during the school year when our church has special meetings the school is also involved. Once again, we encourage parents to attend these meetings so they might see what is happening in the life and ministry of Harvest Baptist Church.

EmergenciesIn the occasion that school is to be let out early,

the administration will notify you by phone. In the event of a weather-related closing, an announcement will be made over the radio station 750 WSB. As a general rule, HBS will follow Cobb County Schools weather related school closings.

Extra-Curricular EligibilityStudents are to maintain a good Christian

testimony in order to remain eligible for participation in extra-curricular activities (games, tournaments, school plays and programs, trips, etc.). HBS sets this policy as a high standard, but not as a means of elimination from activities. Extra-Curricular activities are a privilege and place a student in a position of influence, thus requiring additionalstandards.

Teachers will submit: = A weekly eligibility report, based on the

detrimental to the spiritual, moral, and intellectual life of a young person.

We recognize that the school does not have the authority to tell the home what type of music the young person should listen to; however, we also recognize that students who exist on a steady diet of rock, country, rap, or hip-hop do not grow spiritually, become cold and indifferent to the things of God, and hinder the growth of other students.

Therefore, the policy of Harvest Baptist School is to oppose all forms of this “music” and its culture. Tapes, records, pictures, magazines, emblems, or any other paraphernalia that promotes this culture are not permitted on campus. This includes the singing or whistling of these types of music or drawing the emblem or name on any text, text cover, notebook, or lockers, etc. Failure to comply will result in disciplinary action.

Parental InvolvementThe faculty and administration encourage

parents of our students to remain actively involved in their child’s education. Parents should feel free to contact their child’s teacher to discuss progress. All appointments should be coordinated through the schooloffice.

Parent-teacher conferences are scheduled throughout the year. Parents are encouraged to attend these informative meetings as a means of learning what their child is doing and how they can improve. Please make a note of these dates as well as exam schedules and dates that report cards will be sent home.

There are times throughout the year when parents may be asked to volunteer as a chaperone or a helper during some activity. Volunteers are vital to the success of HBS. We encourage all parents of HBS students to be available when possible to encourage our students by assisting us.

When volunteering, visiting, attending a school function, or picking up and dropping off your children, please follow the same modest standard of dress and appropriate conduct as required of Harvest Baptist School students.

There is to be no smoking at anytime on the church property or any HBS hosted events.

Honor SocietyHarvest Baptist School has a JR High Christian

Honor Society (7 – 9 grade) and a SR High Christian Honor Society (10 – 12 grade), and both are recognized by the Georgia Association of Christian Schools. Nominations are during the month of October and are based upon the student’s GPA (a minimum of 3.67 or a grade of 90), Christian Testimony, and a recommendation by a committee of the faculty.

No academic award will be given to a student who misses more than 16 days of school during the school year for any reason, or who has 20 or more tardies.

Hot Lunch ProgramThe students may order a lunch as part of our

Hot Lunch Program. Lunches must be pre-paid and orders must be made by Monday of the previous week. Each student must maintain credit in their ‘Lunch Account’ to order lunch.

physician must be obtained before any medicine can be given at school (includes over-the-counter medicines). Prescription medicines must be in the original container and labeled with the child’s name. ALL medicines must be provided by the parent and left with the school secretary with a note from the parent explaining dispensing procedures (includes over-the-counter headache medicines). The school cannot assume responsibility for ensuring that medicine is taken at the proper time or in the prescribed manner. Students requiring close attention in this area should remain under the parent’s supervision.

Music PolicyThe purpose of Harvest Baptist School is to work

hand-in-hand with the home to “train up a child in the way he should go.” Since rock, country, rap, and hip-hop “music” are part of the counter-culture which seeks to undermine authority by implanting seeds of rebellion in young hearts and minds, we consider listening to these types of “music” to be
