Harvard Jazz Bands To Make History with 2017 Tour to Cuba

The Harvard University Jazz Bands are announcing a historic educational and

performance tour to Cuba from June 2-9, 2017, led by Director of Jazz Bands and Senior

Lecturer on Music Yosvany Terry. Designed as a hands-on opportunity for Harvard

College undergraduate students to experience and learn about Cuba’s world-renown jazz

culture, the Monday Jazz Band will spend a week in Cuba performing and learning

alongside Cuban performers, professors, and youth.

WHY CUBA?

As a native Cuban, Director Terry possesses a rich background that will allow students to

be uniquely immersed in Cuban culture. Director Terry was born in Camaguey, Cuba to

an illustrious musical family and was educated in Cuba’s outstanding musical

conservatories in Havana—including the prestigious National School of Arts (ENA) and

Amadeo Roldán Conservatory. Coming to New York in 1999, Director Terry has since

been nominated for GRAMMY Awards and performed at the Newport Jazz Festival,

among many other accomplishments (For more information about Director Terry’s

musical background, please visit www.harvardjazz.fas.harvard.edu/staff) With his unique

musical background and in-country relationships, Director Terry has planned a one-of-a-

kind tour throughout Havana and its neighboring provinces to expose and help Harvard

Jazz Band members interact with less-accessible aspects of Cuba’s jazz scene. Unlike

most artistic groups on campus, the Harvard Jazz Bands have also not toured in several

decades, since our domestic tours over 20 years ago. Combining Director Terry’s unique

perspective and a thawing US-Cuban international relationship, there couldn’t be a better

time for students to engage with Cuban culture and further American and Cuban cross-

cultural understanding. As such a unique musical opportunity, this particular tour is

strongly supported by Harvard’s Office for the Arts and Director Jack Megan.

TOUR DESCRIPTION

After joining the Harvard community last year, Director Terry has sought to bring the

Harvard Jazz Bands to his homeland and introduce students to a side of Cuba not

accessible to most visitors. So after a year of deliberations, Director Terry has designed a

weeklong tour especially for the Harvard Jazz Bands. Students will have the opportunity

to visit, perform, and learn at many of Cuba’s top conservatories and performing arts

schools, such as the National School for the Arts (ENA), the Amadeo Roldán

Conservatory, and the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA). In addition, students will also

have the exceptional opportunity to perform with some of Cuba’s most renowned jazz

figures, such as legendary performer and composer Joaquín Betancourt, trumpeter Julio

Padrón, pianist Harold López-Nussa, pianist Roberto Carcassés, saxophonist Cesar Filiú,

percussionist and vocalist Eladio “Don Pancho” Terry, bassist Gastón Joya, drummer

Rodney Barreto, and vocalist Bobby Carcassés.

Working with the Horns to Havana Project (www.hornstohavana.org), a charity dedicated

to donating musical instruments to young Cuban musicians, Harvard students will also

bring musical instruments to several Cuban conservatories that educate young musicians.

Members of the Harvard jazz band will also perform American jazz compositions for

these young students and engage firsthand in new avenues for intercultural exchange

between Cuba and the United States.

Overall, this tour will allow Harvard students to experience seven days of cultural

immersion and exchange, both in formal and informal educational and performance

settings. Students will increase their understanding of a variety of musical approaches

that will influence their own playing and improve their musicianship. Students will also

be able to critically engage with a vibrant culture and gain a unique understanding of

Cuba in the midst of the historic change in Cuban-American relations.

To fully fund the tour and make this transformative experience possible for all of our

talented band members, the Harvard Jazz Bands will launch a campaign to raise the

$60,000+ necessary in order to make the tour a reality.

We appreciate any and all support. Please send any and all inquiries to via email to our

[email protected] address. In the meantime, we invite you to read our

tentative itinerary attached below.
