The students have settled well into their new learning communities and are to be commended for their continuing positive approach to all aspects of school. Activities in term one have included:- Prep Year 4 Literacy and Numeracy Testing The Year 6 trip to Canberra TRYathlon attended by 56 students Interschool Swimming Sports Our movie night ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ New school gate signs and the values signs in the main courtyard The Bike Education Program for Year 5 Election and induction of our Year 6 leaders Auditions and Rehearsals for our production of ‘The Lion King’ And, of course our farewell to Miss.Moore. Every learning community has been involved in an inquiry unit and in some cases there has been an excursion or incursion related to this unit of work. At the start of the year all students complete a transition program. This involves an examination of the school values as they relate to each learning community, clear expectations re: behaviour and work standards and individual goal setting. I congratulate all students for their excellent work throughout term one. School Values: Respect, Co-Operation, Integrity, Empathy and Optimism Each week in assembly we are focussing on our Hartwell values. This week we discussed ‘Co-operation’. The student leaders talked about Co-operation, meaning ‘working together’ and shared how co-operation might look at school. For example:- working together to solve a problem, working together to play a game, working together to build or fix something. In This Issue: Term One School Values – ‘Co-Operation’

Annual Report/School Council Membership

Voluntary Contributions Reminders

Dear Parents, It has been a fabulous start to the 2019 school year at Hartwell and hard to believe that we only have two more weeks of term one to complete. The students have settled well into their new learning communities and are to be commended for their continuing positive approach to all aspects of school. Activities in term one have included:-

Prep – Year 4 Literacy and Numeracy Testing

The Year 6 trip to Canberra

TRYathlon attended by 56 students

Interschool Swimming Sports

Our movie night – ‘How to Train Your Dragon’

New school gate signs and the values signs in

the main courtyard

The Bike Education Program for Year 5

Election and induction of our Year 6 leaders

Auditions and Rehearsals for our production of

‘The Lion King’

And, of course our farewell to Miss.Moore.

HARTWELL PRIMARY SCHOOL 4055

Hartwell P. S. Annual Report/School Council Membership The Annual Report to the School Community was presented to the School Council last Monday night. This is one of the school’s main accountability documents. It includes information on student achievement, some aspects of the student and parent opinion surveys and an overview of what the school is doing. A copy of this report has been placed on the school website and a number of hard copies are available from the school office. The 2019 School Council membership and roles are as follows:- President: Jenny Martin Vice President: Kirsten Neilsen Secretary: David Moloney Treasurer: Andrew Major Parent Members: Sarah Wright, Kate Wilson, David Moloney, Yvonne Chen, Mia Campbell, Dongyi Zheng. Teacher Members: Adrian O’Connor, Pip Turner, Caroline Ross- Williams and Vicky Gemmell. Parents who are not on School Council are invited to join one of the sub committees, which meet approximately twice per term. Voluntary Contributions I would like to remind parents who have not yet finalised school contributions that these are now due. Whilst part of the school levy is voluntary, there is also an essential part which all families are required to pay because it is the cost of requisites that the students use. We rely heavily on them to provide the rich and diverse range of programs and facilities that the students at Hartwell enjoy. Reminders:

We will have a large Working Bee next term

on Saturday 18th May. Please mark this day in

your diary

The last day of school for students this term

is at 2.30p.m on Thursday 4 April. An

assembly will be held at 2.10pm.

The teachers will be attending a curriculum day on Friday 5 April. Camp Australia will be running an OSCH program for parents who wish to access this service for the curriculum day.

Lisa Banks Acting Principal PE UPDATE RUNNING TRAINING – THIS FRIDAY What a great morning of running we had last Friday with over 100 excited runners getting in some training

ahead of our HPS Cross Country. Thank you to the many parents who ran with the students, along with Miss. Kroyherr, Miss. Hodge and Miss. Hunt for assisting and running with the students. We will meet again this Friday (29th March) at Lynden Park at 8am. Next week we will train on Thursday (4th March), due to the Curriculum Day on Friday. Our HPS Cross Country event is scheduled for Friday 10th May at Lynden Park. Be sure to put this date in your diary! Year 3-6 kids will run between 9.30am and 11.30am. Prep- Year 2 students will run between 11.30am and 12.30pm. Details will be sent home early next term. See you this Friday for another fun morning of running! Year 5 Bike Ed. Year 5 students will participate in their on-road ride around the streets of HPS this Friday 29th March. All students will need to have their bike at school for this final session on Friday. If any Yr. 5 students wish to attend running training on Friday also, they can bring their bike to school early and walk to the park with me. I will be leaving HPS from the bottom synthi grass at 7.50am sharp. Well done Year 5 Bike Riders! Harlem Globetrotters Basketball Offer. Late last year Basketball Club Melbourne United visited HPS, delivering a community engagement basketball program. As a follow up, the National Basketball League are offering our school an exclusive ticketing offer for an upcoming Harlem Globetrotters event on at Melbourne Arena on April 7th. The offer of 'Buy two Adult tickets and receive two Junior tickets for Free' (Bronze and Silver category tickets only) can be accessed at the following link: http://bit.ly/2HyojDu LACROSSSE AT HPS Over the past three weeks, the Camberwell Lacrosse Club have delivered clinics to our Year 4 students with much success. HPS has a strong association and rich history with Camberwell Lacrosse Club, with many students joining the club over many years. Did you know that Lacrosse is now on a pathway to Olympics? Two past HPS students who discovered Lacrosse here at school, Saskia Hollenkamp and Cassidy Richards are making waves at junior National level and may have the potential to become Olympians. Our very own Year 3 teacher Ms. Harriet McDonald-Ranga is a former New Zealand Under 19 World Cup representative! There are many opportunities in this sport. The Camberwell Lacrosse Club welcome any new players, boys and girls (9yrs and over). We already have five Yr. 4 students joining the club following our PE clinics. If your child would like to attend a ‘come and try’ session or join the club, you can call Tony Hollenkamp on 0408 328 322. We are fortunate to offer our students so many opportunities to try many different sports, to encourage and support a life long association with sport and physical activity.

Have a great week! Jo Bayes PE & Sport Co-ordinator [email protected]

Word of the Week at Hartwell! ‘Word of the Week’ has now launched into learning communities across the school. The students will have a particular word that is unique to their year level that they have to try and use during the week in their speaking and writing! Each week, there will be a list of all the ‘Words of the Week’ across the school in this newsletter. It would be great to discuss the ‘Word of the Week’ with your child at home and possibly use it in conversation or a piece of writing. Please note: Word of the Week will begin in Prep in Term Two.
