Whileother's Day in the United States is always

Lent, which varies from year to year.Dating back to the 16th century,

othering Sunday was a religious holidayesigned to bring families together. Afterey turned 10, children would often leaveome to serve as apprentices or domestic

servants. Once a year, these children wouldbe given a day off in the middle of Lent sothey could visit their "Mother Church" andtheir family. The children would often bringgifts like special cakes and flowers to theirmothers. Over time, the holiday expandedto include all mothers, not just the MotherChurch.

Mothering Sunday has several names.Although it is not commonly used today,Mothering Sunday is sometimes referred toas Refreshment Sunday because fastingrules are often relaxed. The following information on Nationalolice Week was taken from the Nationalolice Week Web site.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedygned a proclamation which designateday 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day

nd the week in which that date falls asolice Week. Currently, tens of thousands ofw enforcement officers from around theorld converge on Washington, DC to par-ipate in a number of planned events which

onor those that have paid the ultimate sac-ice.

The Memorial Service began in 1982 asgathering in Senate Park of approximately20 survivors and supporters of law enforce-ent. Decades later, the event, more com-

only known as National Police Week, hasown to a series of events which attractsousands of survivors and law enforcementficers to our Nation's Capital each year.

The National Peace Officers' MemorialService, which is sponsored by the GrandLodge of the Fraternal Order of Police, isone in a series of events which includes theCandlelight Vigil, which is sponsored by theNational Law Enforcement OfficersMemorial Fund (NLEOMF) and seminarssponsored by Concerns of Police Survivors(C.O.P.S.)

National Police Week draws in between25,000 to 40,000 attendees. The attendeescome from departments throughout theUnited States as well as from agenciesthroughout the world. This provides a uniqueopportunity to meet others that share a com-mon brotherhood. In that spirit, the FraternalOrder of Police DC Lodge #1 sponsors

receptions each afternoon and evening dur-ing Police Week. These events are open toall law enforcement personnel and are anexperience unlike any other.

You love flowers, and lucky for you,ou have a nice lawn with plenty of roomr flowerbeds. You have some idea of the

owers you would like to grow, but yourlections will depend upon a host ofher factors.

One of the first factors you will have toonsider is when you want the flowerbeds

bloom. Spring, summer, fall or year-und? While a flowerbed that bloomsroughout the year would be ideal, itont be easy to attain, especially if youre a beginner, live in a area with harshinters, travel a lot or change residencesroughout the year. Choose a seasonhen you will be around to care for theowerbeds and appreciate the fruits of

our labor and select flowers that growuring that season.Along with the season, you will also

ave to consider the site conditions.

Where will the flowerbeds be located?

Does each site receive full sun, partial sunor no sun at all? Does the soil drain prop-erly? What is the soil pH? The answers tothese questions will dictate the types offlowers you can grow. While you mayenvision rows and rows of tulips in front ofyour cottage during the early spring, thesoil conditions there might not warrant it.

The characteristics of the flowers them-selves will also have bearing in your deci-sion. Some flowers require more spacethan others. If you have a fairly small bed,you will need to select flowers that spreadlittle, whereas if you have a rather largebed, you might be able to choose a widervariety of flowers, including some that takeup a great deal of space. Height, color

and texture should be considered as well.Flowerbeds usually feature flowers ofvarying heights, often with the shorterspecies in front where they can be seen.

Colors and texture may vary but should

complement each other and the land-scape. Soft pink blooms might look out ofplace in front of a rough, red cedar plankfence.

When you are choosing species foryour flowerbeds, take the surroundingsinto consideration and do your home-work. Know what flowers grow bestwhen, where and with what. Read every-thing you can about flowerbed designand go shopping armed with the rightinformation. The more you know, the bet-ter choices you will make and the betteryour flowerbeds will look. And remember, things change. The flowerbeds you createtoday may not look like the ones you cre-ate 10 years from now. Prepare for your

    flowerbeds to evolve as y

    skills improve.

any homeowners today are opting for

composite decks made of wood flour andplastic. Composite decks generally lastlonger and require far less maintenancethan traditional wooden decks. Less, howev-er, is the key word. Composite decks are notindestructible. They do require some mainte-nance. Here are some tips to keeping yourslooking like new.

Care for your deck as you would any

Keep water away from the deck. Gradethe soil underneath to prevent standingwater. Use the downspouts and splash-guards to direct water away from the deck.Ensure adequate ventilation below andbetween the decking boards to preventmold. Should you ever come across mold, take steps to eradicate it right away.

Clean your composite deck, at leasttwice a year, preferably in the spring and the

fall. Use a soft-bristled brush pose cleaner for everyday grgrime, you may need addiWhatever you do, do not useer on your composite deck. Tin serious damage.
