The West Bend West boys team led localrunners at the state cross country meet inWisconsin Rapids Oct. 31, finishing third inthe Division I race.

West was led by Luke Guttormson, whofinished ninth in team competition and15th overall with a time of 16:26.12. He wasfollowed by teammates Jaden Salinas (13thteam, 21st overall, 16:35.03) Matt Stoll(18th team, 27th overall, 16:40.70), JordanGehrke (22nd team, 32nd overall, 16:44.14)and Petyon Janto (52nd team, 82nd overall,17:13.88). Also running for West were TylerKozlowski (92nd team, 137th overall,17:39.70) and Max Hardy (115th team,164st overall, 17:59.36).

When reached for comment a few daysafter the meet, West Bend East boys crosscountry coach Scott Hammers said the teamhad high aspirations heading into the meet.

"Our goal was to win, a realistic goal,"he said. He then added: "Am I disappoint-ed? No, the guys ran as well as they couldrun."

Hammers added that a top three is veryhard to get at the state competition.

"It's something that the guys should beextremely proud of," he said.

Hammers noted that Guttormson had a15th team place in his first trip at statewhile Salinas kept getting better as the sea-son progressed, becoming the number two

runner on the team by the end of the sea-son. He also noted that Janto is only asophomore who scored a top 100 finish. Headded that three of the five scoring runnerson the squad will return for next year.

Other resultsIn the Division 3 boys team competi-

tion, Living Word Lutheran finished 12th.The Timberwolves were led by AndyBarnhart, who finished eighth in team com-petition and 18th overall with a time of 17:17.64. He was followed by teammatesMichael Axtman (18th team, 40th overall,17:44.97), Matthew Axtman (74th team,113th overall, 18:52.01), Grant Fox (82ndteam, 122nd overall, 19:08.28) and PatrickCassidy (94th team, 134th overall,19:45.65). Also running for Living Wordwere Simon Heller (100th team, 140th over-all, 20:11.48) and Alex Kashhevarof (111thteam, 151st overall, 21:10.74).

In the Division I girls competition, WestBend West finished 19th. Abby Janto ledWest with a 33rd team finish and 48th over-all with a time of 19:51.52. After a fifth place finish in theMidwest Classic Conference regular sea-son, the Living Word Lutheran girls vol-leyball team started a late season runthat led to the state tournament.

The Timberwolves finished second inthe conference tournament, whichlaunched a postseason run which liftedthe team to a trip to state tournamentat the Resch Center in Green Bay. At the

sectional final Oct. 31, Living Wordupset Catholic Central 19-25, 25-22, 25-23, 25-20 to earn its first trip to thetournament.

"I had feeling that we we're going tomake that point," senior Corrianne Cainsaid of the final point that earned theteam a trip to the state tourney. "Butthen once we did, it was an amazingfeeling that yes, we're finally going tostate and this is not the end."

Senior Natalie Niehueser added that

"I knew we were going to have agreat season because we have a bunchof great players but I never reallythought of state," she said.
