Description

The Valtek® HART Filter is installed at the output of aDCS 4-20 mA current source to prevent interference withthe HART® communications signal or the DCS. The HARTcommunications protocol uses frequencies of 1200 Hzand 2200 Hz, which are superimposed on the DC, 4-20mA current source. Some current sources may interferewith the HART signal and prevent proper communica-tions between HART masters such as the 275 handheld

communicator, ValTalk® or SoftToolsTM software. TheValtek HART filter maintains the 4-20 mA DC signal whilepreventing the DCS (or other current source) from dis-torting or filtering out the HART communications signal.Additionally, the filter protects against control systemswhich may interpret the HART communication signal asa positioner fault.

The filter is simple to install and requires no adjust-ments or configuration. Figure 1 shows the filter instal-lation in the 4-20 mA loop. The filter is housed in a DINrail package and should be installed close to the DCScurrent source output. The filter has a series resis-tance of 10 Ω which adds minimal impedance to theloop. Connect the current source to terminalsF and E. Connect the LogixTM 1200 positioner to termi-

nals C and D. Observe proper polarity when connect-ing to these terminals. Terminals G, H and A, B areprovided in order to carry the drain wire from shieldingthrough the filter.
