‘Last night was the best thing I have ever done’

As the lights dimmed, the noise was deafening. Ear-splittingscreams cut through the crisp evening air and could be heardfor miles around New York City.

A staggering 20,000 fans had turned out to see HarryStyles and the rest of One Direction in the flesh at the fabledMadison Square Garden, the Big Apple’s most iconic musicvenue. It was the hottest ticket in town and many teenagefans had fallen to the ground in uncontrollable hysterics aftergetting their hands on one.

Flags from every corner of the globe waved high in thecrowd, showing their support. Girls craned their necks to tryto get a better view and camera bulbs flashed endlessly asthe fans tried to see if the boys were already on the stage.

Rows of burly, expressionless security guards lined the plat-form, which was fitted with a huge runway, so the quintetcould serenade the fans from all sides.

Harry and the boys had managed to sell out the arena, thethird biggest in the world, in the record time of less than oneminute, so they were under huge pressure to deliver. Thenerves backstage were palpable, with Harry tweeting ‘ner-vous’ to his 9 million followers on the social networking site. All the band members had struggled to sleep the nightbefore because they were so high on adrenaline.

Earlier that day Harry had posted a message to his fansreading: ‘Thinking about what we were doing three yearsago today . . . Today we play Madison Square Garden. Wecan never thank you enough. We love you. xx’

In the crowd his proud mum Anne Cox, dad Des Stylesand stepdad Robin Twist watched on. After a whirlwindromance, his new girlfriend, pretty US pop star Taylor Swift, was in the wings too, waiting to celebrate at the lavish private after-party. Also along for the ride were Liam Payne,Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan’s nearestand dearest. It was the largest gathering of 1D’s families andfriends since the final of The X Factor in December 2010.

The minutes ticked by: at last, the historic moment hadarrived. The immense stage lit up in an explosion of blueand white and the 1D logo illuminated the backdrop. Thecrowd continued to roar, making a thunderous noise, andglowing images of the band played in a moving montage.

Then, as a countdown went from ten to one, cannons

threw out great clouds of smoke high into the air and thecrowd were on their feet, bellowing as loudly as they possiblycould in anticipation.

The blue spotlights bore down on Harry, Zayn, Niall,Louis and Liam as they burst into a rendition of theiruptempo hit, ‘Up All Night’, from the front of the runway. They were all pumped up, their hearts hammering and theirears ringing from the noise of the crowd. Harry bouncedup and down on the far side of the stage with an infectiousgrin and cheeky hip thrusts, and egged the audience on todance with him. Many fans almost had cardiac arrests asHarry gave them a smouldering stare or steely gaze. By thetime the boys had finished the first song, a pair of knickershad been thrown at him – the first of a few pairs – a bra andan iPhone would follow as the evening unfolded.

They whipped the crowd into a frenzy with a medley ofhits, including ‘Na Na Na’, ‘Stand Up’, ‘I Wish’, ‘Gotta BeYou’ and ‘More Than This’ and Harry, overwhelmed by themoment, commented: ‘This place is bloody huge,’ to roaringapplause.

They then launched into a cover version of Wheatus’‘Teenage Dirtbag’, complete with pyrotechnics, before performing ‘Live While We’re Young’, ‘Tell Me A Lie’ and‘Everything About You’.

In the middle of the show, the five-piece answered somequestions from Twitter, such as ‘Who has the loudest sec-tion?’ – cue lots and lots of screams – ‘Who can jump thehighest?’ (Niall because Harry’s jeans were too tight) and ‘If

you were an animal what would you be and what wouldyour mating call be?’ Harry had fans bent double with laugh-ter when he said his mating call would be to introducehimself and say, ‘Hello, I’m the Real Liam Payne. Nice tomeet you.’ Other tweets asked them to impersonate NewYork cab drivers and wondered what they would do if achicken attacked them.

Then they sang ‘Moments’, ‘I Want’ and ‘Save You Tonight’,when they threw themselves into the delighted crowd andhad photos taken with fans, while the nervous securityguards manhandled them away from some of the moreeager followers who were grabbing their clothes.

Next, during the performance of their latest acousticballad, ‘Little Things’, they were joined on stage by theirgood pal Ed Sheeran, who had written the track. He wasstunned by the rapturous reception. They concluded theset with ‘One Thing’, ‘Kiss You’ and ‘C’mon C’mon’ and, foran encore, they bounded back on stage for the immenselypopular anthem, ‘What Makes You Beautiful’. Harry hada bra hurled at him and ran around with it onstage beforethrowing it up into the air with a laugh. The whole crowdwere singing along in unison: teenagers and parents; youngand old; British and American.

Niall told the screaming audience: ‘This is the best nightof our lives. You guys have travelled from all around theworld and we cannot believe what has happened heretonight. Thank you so much.’

The group had a big hug, while confetti and giant bal-

loons flew around the arena, and as the gig ended Harrydeclared: ‘I have never been so proud.’

The gig, their last full-length one for 2012, was the mostincredible way to cap off a truly blinding year, in which mil-lions followed Harry’s every move.

The following morning, still on a high from the night beforeand getting back to his hotel at 4 a.m. after the exclusive after-party, he tweeted: ‘Last night was the best thing I have everdone.’

The Chairman-CEO of Columbia Records, Rob Stringer, said the 90-minute set was ‘almost like the biggest showcaseyou’ve ever been to’ and the world’s most influential musicmagazine, Billboard, declared that the gig was ‘less of aproper concert and more of a victory lap from a banneryear.’

The epic performance cemented their status as the topboyband in the world.

This unprecedented level of success was something noone could have predicted two years earlier – not even theirmentor Simon Cowell when he signed them to his presti-gious Syco label after they came third in The X Factor, behindRebecca Ferguson and Matt Cardle.

Their meteoric rise to global superstardom has mademusic history and they have broken hearts and records alongthe way, landing two No. 1 albums in the States, a feat thatnot even the mighty Beatles could manage back in the 1960s.They have notched up a whopping 15 million record sales

and their second album ‘Take Me Home’ has reached the topof the charts in a staggering thirty-five countries.
