I always want a picture to convey some thrill of

atmosphere or association on a subconscious level.

Very often, there are sinister or tragic elements

lurking beneath the surface, which are crucial

components of the kind of beauty I’m attempting

to convey. One finds this kind of aesthetic balance

in all forms of art throughout history, some fun-

damental dark component, which somehow makes

the end result seem all the more beautiful or lyrical.

Classical (especially Greek) culture often finds its

way into my paintings; it is rich in this kind of

aesthetic psychology. Their gods could often be

monstrous without being any less holy. There was

generally no dividing line between their art and

literature, and their cults and religion. The presence

of these elements in many of my paintings, however

disguised, goes a long way to explaining the title

of the show.
