Introduction

In 1980, Mrs. Sara L. Lepman donated to the Library of Congress a collection of sheet music that hadbeen amassed by her late husband, Harry Lepman, DDS (1904-1970). This sheet music, mostly dating fromthe 1890's to the end of the Second World War, was a part of a larger collection of American politicalmemorabilia and artifacts that Mr. Lepman had assembled during his lifetime. Most of the non-musicmaterials were given to the American History Museum of the Smithsonian Institution.

Scope and Content Note

The Harry and Sara Lepman Collection consists almost exclusively of American sheet-musicimprints. The collection is organized into two groups: songs [6 boxes] and piano solos [1 box]. The musicis filed in alphabetical order by composer, with an alphabetical listing by title given at the end of thecontainer list.

The majority of the songs date from the period 1880-1945 and were composed in order to rally thepublic to the support of military efforts in the Spanish-American War, World War I and World War II. Mostdate from the World War I era (1914-1918) and promote the involvement of the general public in the fightagainst the threat posed by Germany. However, viewpoints of isolationism and pacifism are alsorepresented; "I didn't raise my boy to be a soldier" stands in contrast to "I didn't raise my son to be a slacker."Songs with French allusions (such as "Au revoir, but not good-bye, soldier boy," "Oh! Frenchy," and "You'llhave to put him to sleep with the Marseillaise and wake him up with a oo-la-la") are well represented in thecollection. The patriotic titles and lyrics are enhanced by colorfully illustrated cover art depicting Americanpatriotic themes. Pictorial images of Uncle Sam, the Statue of Liberty, and the American flag played asignificant role in the marketing of the songs. Many of the cover pages feature a well-known performer ofthe song as a means to boost sales of the music. Composers Irving Berlin, George M. Cohan, and Al Jolsonare well represented.

The piano music in the collection consists primarily of marches and two-steps, often makingreference to American military divisions and their leaders.

Timothy Bullard, July 1992
