Steps to apply1. Choose a courseWhat subjects do you want to study? What interests you? What are your career goals? Once you know the answer to all or at least one of these questions, it may help you to decide what course to study.

All programmes of study include your main qualification, enrichment and tutorials. Students who have not achieved a grade C or better in GCSE English and/or Maths will be required to develop their literacy and numeracy skills, and work towards achieving these qualifications. You will also develop employability and enterprise skills which will support you to stand out in the future.

This guide has all the information that you need to apply for a course at Harrow College. Our website has a full listing of all of our programmes with detailed information to help you make the right choice.

You may also want to consider attending an open day. These are a great way to get a taste of what College life is all about. You have the opportunity to speak to programme tutors, find more information about the course you want to do and tour the campus.

2. Complete an application formOnce you have chosen the programme that you wish to study, you can apply by submitting an online application via our website. Application forms are also available from Reception at both of our campuses. For most of our courses, we accept applications throughout the year, however many of our courses are extremely popular and due to limited places an early application is advised.

4. EnrolmentYou will be invited by letter to complete your enrolment, usually at the campus where you have applied. Enrolment takes place through August and early September. It is vital that you attend enrolment; failure to attend may result in you losing your place. Even if you do not achieve your predicted results, still come along on the enrolment date you have been given, with your results. Staff will be on hand to help you with alternative programme choices.

3. Interview

Once we have received your complete application form, we will contact you via letter with a date for an initial interview. Your letter will contain full details of your interview date, time and location. If your interview is successful, you will receive an offer letter for the course of your choice, subject to you achieving the required results.

5. ID CardOnce you have completed your enrolment, you can collect your ID card. You are now a Harrow College student!

This will be verified at interview or prior to attending work placement.

Working in the Health and Care field is physically demanding and requires learners to have a calm and professional approach as you will be dealing with various vulnerable client groups. You will also need to pass a fitness for practice assessment at interview/prior to enrolment to ensure you are able to complete the compulsory work experience placement on the course, this may require you to provide additional medical information to confirm your suitability.

Creative MediaWe have some of the best facilities and staff teaching in London with studios that have industry-standard kit and lecturers that have vast experience from all areas of the creative industry.

Courses look not only at the media industry’s impact on society but also how it constructs and influences youth identities.

We get stuck into topical media issues and debates surrounding the internet, film and advertising and the video game industry, whilst also exploring how the media communicates meaning to its audiences.

You’ll work on your own and in groups to critically analyse a range of media products. Then you have the chance to create your own media product using the latest technology, such as Final Cut Pro and In Design. We’ll also encourage you to raise your profile by posting your work onto digital blogs.

Completion of a media course could offer the potential to progress onto a university degree course or you could also go straight into employment within the media industry. Eventually your studies could see you launch a career in journalism, marketing or public relations.

Harrow College also offers A-Level Film Studies and A and AS-Level Media Studies: see the AS/A-Level section starting on page 18.

We offer Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Maths and Psychology at A-Level and a BTEC in Applied Science with pathways in Laboratory and Biomedical Sciences.

You’ll look at particles and quantum phenomena, electricity, materials and waves. You’ll also study the physics of fields and mechanics, before exploring the fascinating areas of nuclear physics, thermal physics and astrophysics.

Chemistry – Investigate substances to find out what they are made of, how they interact and what role they play in modern industrial society.

Biology – Look at the very building blocks of life, studying DNA, cells and genetics and the biology of disease and what can go wrong with the various life systems.

Psychology – Understand social and cognitive psychology and child development. You’ll look at why people develop differently and of the causes of conditions such as autism and anxiety disorders. You’ll also understand yourself better - a valuable asset for your personal and working life.

Participating in an ESOL class is a great way to make new friends and develop your understanding of life and culture in the UK. You’ll meet like-minded people and have the chance to enjoy occasions at the College such as our annual International Food Fair.

Learners with Learning Diculties/Disabilities (LLDD)Harrow College offers a fantastic environment for Learners with Learning Difficulties and/or Disabilities (LLDD). Support is provided by experienced tutors that are experts in their field and able to offer individual advice whilst monitoring progression and identifying suitable routes for development.

We pride ourselves on offering high quality courses where our learners are enabled to actively participate and contribute in the community by being able to take responsibility and exercise control over their own lives. Course content often involves seeking new ways to encourage independence and fulfilment through a range of learning channels.

Our curriculum includes two full time pre-entry courses for individuals aged 16 and over that may need additional support and want to develop their employability skills, confidence and independence. All qualifications are certified by Foundation Learning. The core topics are communications, numeracy and information technology, skills for everyday life and employment, travel training, work related skills and enterprise. The LLDD students also run a shop at the Harrow Weald campus called ‘Bits n Bobs’ where they sell a variety of goods for students and staff. The shop was created for the students by the students with their involvement in all areas from the start-up operations, including marketing, location and design of the shop, product buying, advertising and pricing. The students also produce many of the products, including key-rings, bookmarks and seasonal items such as Christmas cards.

There are also regular opportunities for students to take part in charity, enterprise and sustainability projects. In 2013, the LLDD students were successfully awarded the Anne Swain Award for their contribution towards maximising the biodiversity at the Harrow Weald campus. Recent events have also included participating in fundraising activity for Macmillan Cancer Research to support an on-site coffee morning.

“ I do the book trolley on Wednesdays at the College and have regular customers who buy books and also bring them to sell. I have a passionate interest in books. We also sell dvds and videos. I really enjoy meeting dierent people and the book run gives me the chance to do this .”

Information for parents/carersWhen your son/daughter needs to move on to university or a job we help with UCAS applications. We have our own recruitment agency as well as careers advisors to help find the right job or career opening.

Parents are not just parentsFinally, whilst you are probably reading this because your son/daughter is considering which school or college to attend, we’d also like to draw your attention to the fact that Harrow College provides a wide range of courses for adults. Once they have become a student here, we also know it’s important that you can keep up-to-date with your son/daughter’s progress and that you can get in touch with us if you or your son/daughter has any issues. Q: What do you do to help young people during transition from schools to College?

A; We try to answer all the questions our potential students have. A great way for that to happen is to come into College to meet our current students as well as our staff.

We invest a lot of time in easing students through the first few weeks of College life. Each student has a personal tutor who has special responsibility for a group of students.

FAQQ: At school there are very strong relationships

between sta and pupils. What is it like at College?

A: The best people to ask about this are our students. Read some of their profiles and quotes included in this prospectus and on our website www.harrow.ac.uk. We get very positive feedback about how supportive and caring our teachers and lecturers are.

Q; What about discipline and associated issues?

A: We take discipline very seriously. We monitor attendance which can be checked via the Parents Portal. We expect deadlines for assignments to be met (although we can be flexible where there are special circumstances). Drugs and bullying undermine student achievement - we operate a zero tolerance approach to this for the safety of all our learners.

Q: What about help with getting into university or employment?

A: Getting into university or employment is what many students do upon leaving Harrow College. We help young people to prepare their application and their personal statement, and arrange visits to universities and HE Fairs.

As part of our service, Careers and Employability team also run workshops to support learners with the preparation of CVs and interview skills. We also offer other events such as ‘Mock Interview Day’ to prepare for the world of work, for delivery to employment.

Q: You are a very inclusive College and try to nd something for everyone who applies; how can you have standards as high as a school sixth form?

A: We offer a much wider range of courses across more levels compared to school sixth-form, so we are able to accommodate a wider range of student ability and interest.

We put a lot of effort into making sure applicants are placed on a course that they will enjoy and will succeed in. We don’t just let anyone sign up for any course! This is in their best interest and ours and is part of the reason why we are a top London college.

Q: How multi-cultural is the College?

A; We have students from many diverse groups and a variety of backgrounds, as well as a growing number of international students. This makes for a brilliant mix and ideal preparation for the diversity of universities and the workplace.

Q; Schools sixth forms oen oer a lot of enrichment activities. What about the College?

A: At the start of each year we organise a Freshers’ Fair, much like universities, to introduce our new students to the opportunities on offer and we have staff who work exclusively on organising and developing the programme of enrichment activities.
