Hello 4-H Families,
My name is Toni Wiese (pronounced we see) and I am the new County Youth Coordi-nator for Harrison County.
I was born and raised in Fremont, Nebraska where I graduated from high school in 2016. I attended Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebraska receiving my undergradu-ate degree in Family and Consumer Sciences in December 2019.
In college, I was involved and took on leadership positions in many organizations in-cluding the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS) as the Vice Chair of Service and Outreach on the Student Unit, Nebraska Association of Fami-ly of Consumer Sciences (NAFCS) as a Student Unit Representative on the Executive Council, Association of Family and Consumer Sciences Professionals (AFCSP) as the president, Philomathean President Honorary Society, Cardinal Key Honor Society, and Theta Phi Alpha Sorority.
In my free time, I love baking, especially royal icing sugar cookies, spending time with family and friends, traveling, watching movies that feature Melissa McCarthy, and spending time outdoors, including camping, fishing, four-wheeling and air-boating.
I am super excited to see what this year brings and working with individuals in Exten-sion and the 4-H community!
Looking forward to working with you,
Toni Wiese

“UNMASK YOUR OPPORTUNITIES”
Volunteering May Be Tax Deductible
SENIOR 4-H’ers
Reserve June 30—July 2, 2020 for the
State Youth and 4-H Conference / Animal Science ROUND-UP
You can't deduct the cost of your time, even if you lost pay for taking time off from your job in order to volunteer.
Due to recent tax law changes and for more specific information,
contact your tax preparer.
As a 4-H volunteer, you may be able to deduct some of your expenses on your federal tax re-turn if you itemize deductions.
Out-of-pocket expenses you may be able to deduct include mileage, parking fees and tolls, overnight lodging and meals, uni-forms, and supplies.
Copyrights, Communication Exhibits, and the Fair When presenting an educational presentation, we expect that 4-H’ers will explore a variety of sources to get correct information to the public. The 4-H’er should be able to answer the judge’s question, “Where did you get your information?” Responses should include the complete source such as: 4-H project ma-terial Celebrate Art, rather than just say-ing in 4-H materials. If you used oth-er Extension publications, reference books or maga-zines, you should state the titles and issues if appropri-ate. It is not necessary that you have this printed out, just tell the judge and audience. When presenting a working exhibit, it is also im-portant to give the sources of your information. Re-member, if your directions were taken from a copy-righted magazine or book, you CANNOT duplicate the directions and distribute them. You may have pur-chased the magazine for your use, but that does not grant you permission to duplicate and distribute.
What is the best approach? 1. Make a poster with the directions and include the
source of the directions.
2. If you modified the directions and want to provide a handout, give your directions and credit “Adapted from...” and state the original source. 3. If you did not modify directions, you can not distribute the directions to fairgoers without hav-ing copyright permission
granted from the source. If permission is granted, that should be noted on the handout piece and the 4-H’er brings the letter of permission with them to the fair. Remember to give credit where credit is due and you will have a more educational 4-H experi-ence.

AND LEARNING IN PARTNERSHIP WITH CARING ADULTS
FSQA/YQCA - Questions and Answers
SPECIAL REMINDER Take photos as you begin working on your projects so you will have them for your write up and record book.
What happened to FSQA?
FSQA has been replaced by Youth for the Quality Care of Ani-mals or YQCA.
What is YQCA?
In today’s world, food safety is one of animal producers’ biggest responsibilities. The goal of YQCA is to help youth and their parents better understand what they can do to produce the safest food pos-sible.
When 4-H'ers meet the 4-H YQCA certification, they also meet the Beef Quality Assurance and Pork Quality Assurance certifica-tion.
Iowa 4-H'er's produce over 17 million pounds of meat each year, which all goes into the American food supply.
Consumers expect a safe, high quality food product.
4-H'ers need to know the food production rules and follow them exactly.
Who Needs YQCA Certifica-tion?
All youth** (ages 8 to 21) ex-hibiting beef, swine, sheep, dairy cattle, goats (dairy or meat), poul-try, or rabbits at the Harrison County Fair and the Iowa State Fair. **REMEMBER—Third graders are exempt.
When and Where do I Certify for YQCA?
You have two options for YQCA. You may take and pass an online training/test or Harrison County will hold face-to face trainings this spring. The dates for the face-to-
face trainings for Harrison County are Thursday, March 19 & Thurs-day, April 2 You only need to at-tend one training session each year.
We will provide a meal starting at 5:30 pm before class starts at 6:00 pm.
Be aware that you will need to go online to pre-register and pay for the YQCA session before coming to the class. The cost for the face-to-face session is $3 per youth.
You should be prepared to pay for the online training and testing option online. Current cost is $12 per year for the online training/test.
The money for classes and tests goes to YQCA, not to Extension.
What if I did the FSQA test-out option previously?
Youth who completed the FSQA test-out option previously will be granted certification through their respective expiration date. After your FSQA test-out option has ex-pired, you will need to certify through YQCA.
What if I want to test out?
There is no longer an option for taking a printed version of the test at the Extension office. All testing must be done online through YQCA. Again, there is a fee to take the ex-am. You are only eligible to test out in the years you are 12 and 15. You have only one opportunity to pass the test. If you do not pass the test, you will need to either at-tend a face-to-face session or com-plete the online training. Contact the Extension office for more infor-mation about testing.
The link for YQCA information is https://www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/yqca This will show you the help sheets and also has the link for you to login to YQCA.
The link to create an account to sign-in to obtain your certification is https://yqca.learngrow.io you will sign in through your family's 4hOnline account. It is very im-portant that you DO NOT make a new/separate account when doing this.
Use your 4hOnline account.
You must be re-enrolled and active for the current 4-H year in order to create a YQCA account.
YOU NEED TO PRINT YOUR CERTIFICATE AFTER YOU COM-PLETE THE ONLINE COURSE AND BRING OR SEND A COPY TO THE EXTENSION OFFICE OR DOWNLOAD THE CERTIFICATE AS A PDF AND EMAIL TO THE OFFICE.
YQCA testing is based on the age you are
on January 1st, not on your grade.

Ak-Sar-Ben Livestock Show New look, new name, new system of nominating and entering!
Aksarben Livestock Show has tran-sitioned to a Junior Livestock Show named Aksarben Stock Show. They even have a new logo! This show is open to youth ages 9-19. 4-H mem-bership is no longer required.
DNA hair samples are required for market swine, market beef, market lambs and market goats. DNA samples are due to Aksarben by July 1 (postmarked).
Families must order and pay for their own DNA enve-lopes through the Aksarben website, take their own hair samples, send the samples to Aksarben and then make their own entries. Extension does not have anything to do with the process anymore.
Preparing to show market beef, market, swine, mar-ket lambs and market goats for Aksarben is a 2-step process. Animals must first have DNA samples submit-ted and then you “enter” them at a later date. Go to the Aksarben Stock Show web site at is https://www.aksarbenstockshow.com/ and look under the “Exhibitors” tab to order your DNA envelopes, check additional identification requirements and for more infor-mation.
Breeding animals and feeder calves DO NOT need DNA samples submitted.
As of 02/07/2020, there was no information posted on their website about dates or deadlines.
Remember, Aksarben Stock Show is now located at Fonner Park in Grand Island, Nebraska.

2020 Dairy Goat Share-A-Kid Opportunity
Are you looking for a new and exciting way to ex-pand your 4-H experience? Interested in showing an animal, but don’t know if you can afford one of show quality?
Each year the Iowa Dairy Goat Association pro-motes interest in dairy goats across our state. One of the ways IDGA encourages young people to explore this aspect of agriculture is through their Share-A-Kid program.
This statewide contest is open to youth in 4th
through 12th grades and who are a member of 4-H, FFA, IDGA, or any other agricultural group. Winning applicants are selected from an essay they submit. The essay can include drawings, photos, or any other creative touches. IDGA can only award one goat per family per year; however siblings are encouraged to apply.
If you are interested in this opportunity, visit http://www.iowadairygoat.org/share-a-kid-program/ for more details and an application form. Entries must be postmarked by March 14, 2020.
