Harrisdale Primary School NEWSLETTER Issue 9: 22nd June 2018 From the PrincipalDear Parents and Carers, This week marked another busy week at HPS with parent interviews on Tuesday, the Spelling Bee finals on Wednesday and the Winter Sports Carnival today for senior students. Thank you to our teachers for working hard to accommodate as many parent interviews as possible on Tuesday. Thank you also to the parents that made it to the school to speak to their child/children’s teachers. Wednesday saw the finals of the Spelling Bee. I made my way down to the final of the Years 3 and 4 spellers and was suitably impressed. I consider myself to be a pretty good speller but I would have been knocked out of the finals, such was the calibre and strength of this group of spellers. Well done to all students who participated in this event, and to all the mum and dad coaches that supported the students to learn the words. Results will be in the main body of the newsletter. Next week we will celebrate NAIDOC week, with this year’s theme being, ‘Because of her, we can’. Again, I will elaborate more on this in the main body of the newsletter. We’ve one week to go before the school holidays when we ‘tag’ and place your children back in your full time care for two weeks. I hope you have a nice break planned for you and your children so they can recharge and come back next Semester fully charged for learning. If you’re busy working, I hope you can get to spend some quality time together as a family. Please stay safe and we’ll see you back at Harrisdale PS for the start of Term 3 on Monday, 16th July. I will be enjoying some long service leave and soaking up the sunshine in beautiful Croatia at the start of Term 3. I will be back in the third week of school. NEWSLETTER Issue 9: 22nd June 2018

From the Principal…

Dear Parents and Carers,

This week marked another busy week at HPS with parent interviews on Tuesday, the Spelling Bee finals on Wednesday and the Winter Sports Carnival today for senior students. Thank you to our teachers for working hard to accommodate as many parent interviews as possible on Tuesday. Thank you also to the parents that made it to the school to speak to their

child/children’s teachers.

Results will be in the

main body of the newsletter.

Next week we will celebrate NAIDOC week, with this year’s theme being, ‘Because of her, we can’. Again, I will elaborate more on this in the main

body of the newsletter.

Please stay safe and we’ll see you back at Harrisdale PS for the start of Term 3 on

Monday, 16th July.

I will be enjoying some long service leave and soaking up the sunshine in beautiful Croatia at the start of Term 3. I will be back in the third week of

school. Ms Lyons will be Acting Principal in my absence.

See you next term,

Karen Duncan,

KINDY & PRE PRIMARY PIRATE DAY ON THE 8TH JUNE

On Friday 8th June, all our Kindy and Pre-Primary classes participated in Pirate Day Friday for the very first time; raising awareness and important funds for childhood brain cancer. We spent an Arrr-mazing day together, dressing up, reading stories, making art, playing games and talking in our best pirate voices. We received a very generous donation from Woolworths, Harrisdale, who supplied us with a yummy fish & chip lunch! Thank you also to all our wonderful families, for helping to sup-port this great cause.

We were able to raise $334.50 towards The Kids Cancer Project.

NAIDOC WEEK

Our Business Plan 2017-2019 outlines the beliefs and values of our school community. One of our core values is one of Respectful Relationships and it states, ‘we are accountable for our own actions and we resolve differences respectfully’. It is this value that I refer to in this segment. Please let me remind members of our school community that the same Code of Conduct that applies to our staff and students, also applies to our parents when on school grounds or involved in school events. If at any time, you have an issue with a student at our school or another parent, then you need to approach the school principal, in all instances. The school principal is responsible for managing the safety of the school site. Taking matters into your own hands and putting the safety of students and families at risk on our school site, will result in individual/s being served with a prohibition order, prohibiting entry to the school site for up to 60 days.

RESPECTFUL RELATIONSHIPS

As a school that proudly embraces and celebrates diversity and difference, and a school that values and acknowledges the contributions made by our indigenous peoples, we are pleased to be celebrating NAIDOC week at HPS next week. This year’s theme, ‘Because of her, we can’ recognizes the active and significant roles Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have played, and continue to play, at the community, local, state and national levels. Next week, students at Harrisdale will be lucky enough to hear from an amazing Noongar artist, Gina Williams. Gina is committed to preserving the Noongar language through music. Gina is a Balladong (Noongar) daughter with links, through her grandmother, to the Kitja people in the East Kimberley. Her music is informed by an ancient Indigenous culture. I’m sure the students will enjoy hearing her story.

LIBRARY NEWS Please be reminded that all library books are due back into the library this week, This gives me the last week of school to send home invoices with students that have overdue books or returned damaged books.

It’s been great to see so many excited children coming through the Library over the past week enjoying and learning about chickens for Science.

Just a reminder the Library is open after school on a Monday and Wednesday only. All other days the library is closed after school to students and parents, as it is not supervised.

Thank you,

Mrs Di Giacomo

HPS CHICKENS For the past 2 weeks, Harrisdale Primary has been host to a dozen baby chickens. Students saw these chicks hatch from their eggs last Tuesday and the chicks have since been utilised in the lower years to teach Science concepts. The PPs have been learning about the needs of animals, Year 1s have been learning about external features and habitats, and the Year 2s have been learning about life stages. It has been an engaging and authentic way to learn and has promoted care and compassion in our students.

This Friday, the chickens will be returning to the company assisting us ('You Can Hatch Us') with the hens going off to be free range egg layers!

YEAR 6 TREES4CHANGE ..

THE READING CORNER

At Harrisdale, we value story time and encourage you to read aloud with your children. In each newsletter we will be encouraging you to read a different text type with your child. With the school holidays around the corner, we encourage you to read a procedure with your child. This could be a recipe or set of instructions. You could have a discussion after reading or even follow the steps and make something special together! Ask questions like, what do we need? What should we do first? What should we do next? What comes after that?

Our homework guidelines state that home reading should occur every day. As a Digitech school, students should be recording their home reading in their digital home reading logs.

To find out more ideas and resources, look up the ‘Never Stop Reading’ initiative on the Department of Educa-tion Website: https://www.education.wa.edu.au/neverstopreading

In the Harrisdale Primary School’s Business Plan, we write that we value our students contributing to the world in a positive way and foster a caring attitude towards our environment. We also wish to instil in our students a sense of civic responsibility by encouraging community service and volunteering. With this in mind, on Thursday 14th of June, Year 6 Students participated in Trees4Change 2018 - an initiative to develop their environmental citizenship and community values by planting trees to help stop erosion on the Myalup community beach. Students worked with the Shire of Harvey in small, supervised teams using specialised handheld planting equipment. This excursion also allowed for the practical application of sustainability and science understandings in both Biological and Earth/Space strands. This program is funded by a State Natural Resource Management (NRM) grant and was organised by Bruce Ivers. We are proud to be able to say that we planted just over 7000 seedlings!! A Herculean effort by all students, parents and teachers involved and a wonderful contribution to the Myalup Beach environment – everyone slept very well that night! A huge thanks to Mr. Cutajar for organising such a wonderful excursion.

TRIPLE P ...

HOMEWORK HABITS By Professor Matt Sanders

Homework is an accepted part of every child’s schooling. However, it doesn’t have to become a

family battle. The key is for parents and children to be prepared.

Your child should have a set, regular time for homework that fits in around your schedule and your

child’s other commitments such as sport or music lessons.

Homework should come at a time after your child has had a chance to relax after arriving home and

before they are allowed to play or watch television.

Relaxing immediately after school is as important for children as it is for adults who want to wind down after coming home from

work. Give your child an afternoon snack and use that time to find out what their homework tasks are, whether they need any spe-

cial materials for projects, and when it needs to be ready.

While children don’t have to have absolute quiet when working, they should have a homework area that has clear table space, is

well lit, and is free from obvious distractions (like the television).

If your child wants your opinion on how good their homework is don’t feel that you have to make sure the work is perfect before

they hand it in. They may feel discouraged if you point out all the spelling and punctuation mistakes. Instead, say something posi-

tive about the work and, if you must make corrections, just choose one or two mistakes.
