PREFACETHE Compass and Square with Symbol-ism, is a small compilation of frag-mentary lore designed as a iSnger-postto point the way for the student who seeksto hnow that Equilibrium, Unity, and Har-mony in existence are essential in Evolu-tion to establish Equality, Justice, Libertyand Peace.Pew of the World's busy multitudes havethe leisure or care to give their attention tolarge books of many words written uponabstruse subjects. Thus, we send out thisBooklet, which is so limited in size that onlythe outer edge of the vast subject for con-sideration can be touched.In the beginning, it must be understood asa compilation, with additions. EXPLANATIONTHIS Compilation is designed for wo-men only, for the simple reason thatman needs no small finger-board totell him that there is a vast and valuableKnowledge and the way to find it. He hashad access to same for centuries, throughthe man-made secret fraternities and cer-tain Church Hierarchies, where this lore hasbeen usurped and concealed under cunningphrases and recondite symbolism, and towhich all women have been denied access,considered as undeserving and incapable.Thus, man would only scorn and deride thisvery humble and plain attempt to suggestthe way of Truth to woman, whose place has(since developed mankind existed) everbeen assigned to servitude and dense igno-rance by masculine authority, as best for theEvolution of the Race.

This Treasure beyond value is the justinheritance of humanity under the sustain-ing Law of Equilihrium, but it has been un-scrupulously usurped by a dominant powerof evil and special privilegesoulless andselfish for centuries, leaving the multitudesof humanity wandering in the wilderness,chained to the wheel of physical law, boundto the cross of ignorance, and, like flies beat-ing upon the window pane, their outlook forescape from the grind of the millstones andsuffering is hopeless.Few know there is a Boor to open for thereturn journey, and the masses have neitherthe ability nor aspiration to seek for Light.Only Knowledge and Wisdom can properlyguide. ^^Seek and ye shall find," but youwill not find it in schools or colleges, fromthe pulpit, or by the press. But thecurrent explanations of these valuable andinstructive emblems is such as to make mostof them worse than of no real value to anyhuman heing, for it is cunningly calculatedthat they will only deceive, and, by basefalsity and hypocrisy, mislead all sincereseeking minds far away from the Path thatleads to the fountain of Truth.On page 819, ^^Morals and Dogma," weread: ^^The Blue Degrees are but the outercourt or portico of the Temple. Part of thesymbols are displayed there to the Initiate,but he is intentionally misled by false inter-pretations. It is not intended that he shallunderstand them ; l)ut it is intended that heshall imagine he understands them. Theirtrue explication is reserved for the Adepts,the Princes of Masonry."Then upon the same page we are told that*^Hypocrisy is a mortal disease," and thuswe realize the consistency ( '?) of man-rule,even in the Lodge.The dominant motive in arranging this

ness. Knowledge liberates, ignorance en-slaves; herein lies the secret of its usurpa-tion. The masses of humanity being en-slaved gives liberty, selfish ease and craftypower to a dominant few who have most suc-cessfully exploited the various Races ofMankind during the existence of human lifeupon the Planet.Everywhere, and among all the various

phases of mankind over the Globe, one andthe same condition is found for women,varying only in form. That is, their denseignorance en masse of all but the most triv-ial illusions and falsities of life, renderingthem inane, helpless, and hopeless to copewith their bondage.For multiplied centuries of the vast longago, all that was worthy of effort in educa-tion was so concealed under a complex styleof phraseology and a net-work of symbology,that it eventually became only the Lost

There is evidence that the great motive ofthe mighty Law of Nature in producingmanifestation by form, was the expansionof mind and soul consciousness, that contin-ued growth in Evolution, which leads toUnity in Universal Wisdom, and is the onlytreasure worthy of great effort by fallenConscious Life (i. e., ''The Widow's Son").Nature ever destroys that which does notgrow, and to know the Real, free from thefalse, aids our growth under the mightyLaws of Life and Being. Such is the inher-itance of Mankind.The same condition has environed andlimited real knowledge, that has fallen to thelot of other human possessions. Its actualholders, naming themselves the favored few(Prince, Adepts, etc.), strive to retain it ex-clusively for self-interest.Imparting knowledge does not diminishits store; one can remain as rich as everafter enriching the minds of others ; but thevain human mind places a very high valueupon self distinctiony fearing its loss.Knowledge, however held, is essentiallypower, and in many respects it serves the

This radiates a more brilliant haloin the midst of ignorance, which ever impliesgeneral weakness easily exploited. Thus wehave flourishing Church Hierarchies sup-ported by the credulity of the multitude(principally women) and various secret fra-ternitiesall under arbitrary masculinedomination. Subject to these continued con-ditions, there is in time developed a state ofaffairs which affords no inducement to im-part real knowledge, there not being suffi-cient intelligence abroad to appreciate orunderstand the great truths and philoso-phies of Life, although announced in theirplainest garl3 of simplicity; ignorance,fanaticism and prejudice opposing all effortin that direction.Ignorance ever generates ignorance, mul-

tiplying supreme misery, and this aloneshould imply that the compassionless mate-rial Law ot"l will multiply" should be con-trolled by reason and justice, for it is in thisdense ignorance that the deep sleep of Adamcontinues to be the baneful inheritance ofall the various Eaces of Mankind up to thepresent time, its somnolent influence stulti-fying and destructive, swaying the variedmentality of the masses to that extreme de-

As theMothers of Men, she has always dwelt in adeep channel of inferiority; serving andadmiring her self-styled superiors. Accord-ingly, her supreme desire and aspiration haseven been, and continues to be up to thepresent time, to serve and worship some so-called Master, physically, morally and spir-itually, not realizing that the great majorityof these self-styled Masters and Leaders ofblind humanity of the past were men of evil,selfish motive, whom to serve, worship andadmire only increases her inferiority anddegredation.Enlightenment and a general, broad con-

ception of Facts only, will endow womanwith a new life, a new understanding, aproper aspiration, a knowledge of her ownHigher Self, and a logical hope of a futurelife. Then, as the Intelligent Soul of theRace, she can aid in overthrowing the evilcustoms and conditions that have cursed our

Priceless education will develop all therequisites for that necessary companionshipto unite Love and Wisdom, those infallibleguides to the haven of Equilibrium, Libertyand abiding Peace. It is the duty of womanto cultivate a mentality strong and positive,possessing her own body and intellect, en-dowed with the ability to recognize whereher credulity has led her and the crafty mo-tive of her deceivers. Until this is thor-oughly understood, she can never be a capa-ble voting citizen, but only a tool for theJesuitic methods and influence of Politics.Church Heirarchies are centers of politi-cal power, and all Governments of import-ance are controlled by secret fraternities.Since they murdered Morgan, Black Magi-cians are as numerous as in the days ofancient Atlantis, and they find lucrativefields for labor everywhere by the ignorance,and credulity of the masses.The much vaunted medical profession isone of their most fruitful planes of action.Thousands of ignorant women are beingdragged into unnecessary surgical opera-tions for imaginary ills, their health and

The World is growing ripe forthe wisdom faculty, and the golden threadsfrom the web of Secret Knowledge must heunravelled.Give to humanity that which is lockedwithin the doors of antiquated organiza-tions, and the whole world will be the gainerfor having a just access to fountains ofTruth. This will then unite Peace andGood Will, that blessing of equity due theRaces of Mankind.Nature and Her immutable Laws is thegreat teacher of humanity, for such is theRevelations of Divinity, and those who knowthis Revelation acknowledge no superior hutLAw^ and bend the knee only to the Majestyof Creative Potver. The only Master forwoman to reverence is her own Higher Selfin this important school for the Soul, calledLife, an arena of experience and disciplineunder the Law of Evolution, that prepares itto return from exile with acquired knowl-edge to a brighter existence beyond thePortal of Death.

These symbols can be traced over the com-plete Globe and back to the long forgottencenturies. In every age of the World's his-tory we find the Cross, the Circle, and theSwastica. They are as old as Mankind, andreveal the most important teaching thatthere is one true original Law, invariable.Eternal, calling with irresistible voice toDuty and Justice. It is the Law of Unity,and Aphrodite is its principle.We read in the life of Pythagoras thatteaching by symbols was most necessary, andwhen they are made clear they produce aDivine Inspiration in those who unite intel-lect with learning. The true meaning of afew of the symbols are still known in theMasonic Lodges, many others are disused,and some are lost beyond recovery.From the beginning, most of the symbolswere kept carefully and strictly concealedfrom all but the favored few (mistaken bythe multitude as superior), and false inter-pretations of them were given to mislead allothers.Symbols are used to conceal and not to re-veal, and among those important ones whose

These will prob-ably never be discovered by the generalFraternity.About the year 1750, the Master's Degreewas dismembered, losing the Master's Word,and no Master Mason now obtains that forwhich he became a Mason, and to which hehas a right, and no one now journeys fromthe high place of Gibeon to the ThreshingFloor of Oman, the Jebusite, nor has heseen his Master clothed in Blue and Gold,nor are the Apprentices and Fellow's Craftany longer paid at their respective Columns,nor does the Master use in his work Chalk,Charcoal and an Earthen Vessel, nor doesthe Apprentice becoming a Fellow Craftpass from the Square to the Compass, forthe meaning of these phrases have long beenlost, and Masonry of today knows nothing ofthe science of Morality and Philosophytaught by its sacred symbols.Symbology is a figurative and emblemati-

Mutely thesesymbols were offered, leaving every one tointerpret them according to their own com-prehension.Masonry reveres Pythagoras as authority

on symbology. He had a charmed life ofopportunity, but there are many men andwomen of today who could surpass him inlearning and do far better work for human-ity were they favored with half of his supe-rior advantages and privileges. He left nowritings, and his last days recorded manymistakes and failures. It did not becomepossible to understand his symbology andteachings until the Zend Books were recov-ered by the French Savant ^*de Perron."The Zend Philosophy is the teaching of

Fire Worship known to the Persians, and tothis knowledge the Races of Mankind willreturn in the Sixth Epoch, now approaching.

Substitute symhology is ivorthless, but thetrue, original symbols are entitled to he re-vered, because they represent, whetherMasons know it or not, the very God powerin Creation, the Wisdom, Word, and Mani-festation.

valuable, and in time Mankind (especiallywomen) will learn that to have knowledgeis to he religious.The human mind speculates upon thegreat mysteries of Nature, and finds itsideas anticipated by the Ancients, whosemost profound thoughts are to be searchedfor in their symbology, by which they en-deavored to express ideas too great for utter-ance in words. For the lofty thoughts ofsacred aspirations cannot float down into thedensity of speech. No language ever spokenby Mankind has the requisite words to ex-press the reverence and profound sense ofthe great mysteries of Birth, Life and Death,and the New Life Beyond that Portal ofTerror.In our own search for Truth we must first

ever bear in mind the Dual Law everywherein evidence, then learn that the lost knowl-edge of secret Fraternities is based upon themystery of the separation of androgynoushumanity into distinct male and female, theunderstanding of Generation and Regener-ation, and the gigantic task of the GreatWork in the return of Mankind again toUnity plus the gain of knowledge by experi-ence during the separation. Woman andman must be ever recognized and under-

offered to women in the Fraternity are cas-ual substitutes only, and not one of them hasany real title to existence, the AmericanEastern Star heing especially worthless/'But the place of woman in the Rites of Ini-tiation has been long since determined aftera manner which leaves no doubt regardingthe equality of the sexes therein, and in thesecret ceremonies which have Divine Knowl-edge as the final settlement of their research,the man is not without the woman, nor hewho is Priest of the Sacramental Mysteriesis not without the Priestess within the com-nunion of super-essential sanctity.On the physical plane, two like poles willalways repel each other, while the oppositesor negative and positive, are mutuallyattracted. Thus, the two processes for theTwo Creations, the animal and the Divine,greatly differ.Symbols have various meanings, the esot-eric and most valuable not usually given.

THE COMPASS AND SQUARE, WITH SYMBOLISMThe rough Ashlar to the Enterred Appren-tice is typical of his own undeveloped andundisciplined self, and he is supposed towork upon it well and with patience, bidinghis time to please his Master, i e., his ownHigher Self, when he will be allowed to takehis tools to the Column of Bohaz, to receivehis wages, i. e., travelling in foreign coun-tries, etc. The perfected Stone is to be ad-justed by the working tools of the FellowCraft, for here the candidate is admittedinto the Middle Chamber, for the sake of theletter ^'G", or Generation, and should everaspire to produce offspring superior to him-self. Here, his Fellow Craft, or Comrade,must be Woman, and his wages given at thisColumn on this Plane, by living an unselfishand exemplary life as an Elohim or Crea-tor, is expansion of mind and soul experi-ence, leading to Peace and Understandingin Self Conscious Life Eternal.The Cross has been a sacred sjnmbol from

the earliest antiquity; it is found upon allthe enduring monuments of the World, inall countries, and upon those marvelous fig-ures of Easter Island relics of Ancient Le-muria we find the Crux Ansata, this mostcommon of all emblems carved upon the oldtemple walls of Ancient Egypt. It is foundgrasped in the hand of almost every figure

THE COMPASS AND SQUARE, WITH SYMBOLISMof a Deity or Priest, and was the form of aniron tether pin, to make fast to the groundthe cords which confined young animals.Eealizing this as a strictly phallic emblem,we understand how its wrong and unsacreduse can shackle the higher principles ofLife, chaining us to the Earth under a strict-ly animal existence.From the correct idea of Generation camethe ancient reverence everywhere paid tosymbols of generative power which formedthe philosophical Cross of Masonry ; and theend and perfection of the Great Work ofRegeneration is expressed by a Triangle sur-mounted by a Cross. The Crux Ansata orEgyptian Cross, and the Christian Crosshave the same meaning. The Cross sur-mounted by a Circle is the astronomical signof Venus or Love, and the great function ofhuman life on our dark Planet called Earthis to develop and perfect that unselfish Lovethat leads to higher realms of under-standing.The uniform Cross with four equal arms,symbolizing the sacred Tetractys, is the per-fect number Ten, i. e., man and woman, orthe Ten Points on which Hiram is raised;and in time it might be a matter of some in-terest to the vast multitude of women, en-slaved by the benighting influence of Ortho-

THE COMPASS AND SQUARE, WITH SYMBOLISMdoxy to know that the Uniform Cross sym-bolizes sex union, and the man on the mas-culine form of the Cross is the emblem ofthe Divine Creative Principle degraded intoevil by ignorant Thieves, as Prometheusstole the Fire from Heaven.The way of redemption is symbolized bythe Forty-seventh Problem, a very ancientemblem of much meaning, by which welearn that in every right angled triangle thesum of the squares of the base and perpen-dicular equal the square of the hypotenuse.In other words, Isis and Osiris united formthe House of Horus. The numerical valueof this problem is significant. 543 reversedgives 345, added together w^e have 888, theancient Greek number of the Christ.The Sun and Moon represent the twogrand principles of all generations. Activeand Passive, Male and Female. Sun, Moonand Earth furnishes one aspect of the Forty-seventh Problem, symbolized in the Lodgeby Master and Wardens. They also repre-sent Spirit, Soul and Body. All Masonry isbut an allegory of the journey of the Soul,or Self Conscious Life, through its impris-onment in Matter,Symbols were the almost universal lan-guage of ancient Theology where the rela-tions between the human and Divine were

Initiation was a school in which truths ofprimitive revelation were taught with allother occult sciences, including animal mag-netism, etc., and terms of probation extend-ing into years were required; but modernMasonry has a system of graft by whichlarge classes graduate to the Thirty-seconddegree in one week. Thus, the common pop-ular explanations of the vast system of sym-bols in Masonry are well fitted for the mul-titudes that swarm into the Lodges andTemples. There is very little sympathy be-tween those ignorant masses and the high-est and most sacred Truths. Sublime con-ceptions do not affiliate with barbarous oathsand a generally supported double standardof morality^ rendering human life a wreckin mockery.The Priesthood possessed one-third ofEgypt, and they gained much of their influ-ence and power at that time, as they do to-day, by means of their knowledge of theMysteries, sparing no effort to impress thepeople with a full sense of their own self im-portance; clerical egoism^ bigotry and offi-ciousness swaying the ignorant, credulous

It was consecrated inthe Mysteries of Bacchus and Eleusis ; andthe Serpent, in connection with the Circle,is found upon the monuments of all ancientNations.In the Mysteries of Bacchus, the officersheld serpents in their hands, raised themover their heads and shouted ''Heva," whichwas the original oriental name of the Ser-pent and of the Constellation in which thePersian placed Eve and the Serpent.
