HARNESSING WIND ENERGY THROUGH WINDMILL FOR

SUSTAINABLE LIVELIHOOD

Progress Report December 08 - May 2009

1. Project title : Harnessing wind energy through windmill for sustainable livelihood

2. Project location : Village Sawan ji Dhani, Union Council Tardos, Tehsil Chachro District Tharparkar

3. Project duration : 04 months (planned)

4. Direct Beneficiaries: 04 Households (14 elder members among total 22 members) are direct beneficiaries

- Qamarudin s/o Ali Mohammad Rahimoo - Subhan s/o Sawan Rahimoo - Amanullah s/o Qamarudin - Shamsudin s/o Ali Moahmmad

5. Project Description and Targets:

a. Need: - Beneficiaries of the project is a group of Thari persons who had will and wish

to cultivate a land of piece - There was already a dug well already they have constructed under CCB

project - Group belongs to low-income class having only income to meet two ends;

and not extra cash/money for managing/solving any other problem or invest - Dug well was ready for use but hauling water is a big problem and because

of that group member is unable to make arrangements for any appropriate resource/arrangement for dragging out water for kitchen gardening or drip irrigation

b. Technology & Approach:

i. In the light of above facts/ground realities the applicable strategy for cushioning the hardships of suffering souls was to focus upon an alternative approach:

Appropriate Technology Less recurring cost No frequent maintenance required No or less recurring cost The answer to all the above points was found that: Harnessing of renewable energy based resources i.e. wind was found high

promising because this is environment friendly, sustainable, less/no recurring cost demanding and easy to maintain.

c. Targets:

Over all objectives:

- To promote the culture of harnessing the renewable energy resource - To encourage community for effective energy usage with less side

affects/repercussions - To drag out enough quantity of water with minimum input for sustainable

livelihood - To discourage the migration from their homeland to command area for

livelihood during dry spells/droughts.

Specific Targets:

- To install one windmill on dug well in projected area within 02 months - To cultivate at least 2 acres of land by flood irrigation and 5 acres by

drip/sprinkle/pitcher irrigation

6. Progress: Keeping in view the above targets and objectives, social mobilization was started in area and the progress is as under: a. Installation of windmill: A windmill was purchased from Karachi and has been installed at proposed location. The specifications are as under:

S# Specification 1 Operation Mechanical Round the

clock 2 Out put power 1 k w 3 Cut in wind speed 4m/s 4 Rated wind speed 10 m/s 5 Cut in wind speed 25 m/s 6 Swiped area 50 ft 7 Discharge 2000 gallon per day

8 Head 250ft maximum 9 Height 30 ft

10 Mounting Square 11 Leg span 9 ft 12 Base fixing 2x2x3 13 Structure Mild steel silver coated

14 Angle size 76mmx76mmx7mm 15 Pipe GI 16 Suction pipe GI

The pictorial process of windmill installation is given below:

b. Construction of water tank: Near windmill a water tank of 9X9X5 feet has been constructed to store the water for further distribution as per need. The capacity of tank is to store 12,000 liters. This tank has supported in better management of water.

c. Laying of water distribution pipelines: National Water Management Program, District Mithi was mobilized and got support for distribution major pipelines, channels and valves. Total worth of mobilized resources is around Rs. 90,000. Plz this may be noted that above said material was got in kind not cash for the purpose. Whereas for drip irrigation cost has been paid from budget of project.

Summary of Progress: - One windmill has been installed near Sawan ji Dhani, near village Tardos, Tehsil

Chachro, District Tharparkar - One water tank of about 12,000 liters capacity is constructed - Distribution channels for piece of 4 acre land has been laid down with support of

National Water Management Project - Average water dragged out by windmill is 34,000 liters daily (in 15 hours bcz during

night time villagers stop windmill to stop avoid the over flow of water) - 100 trees of ber (fruit bearing tree) have planted and recently grafted - About 04 acres land is cultivated through project support - This is exemplary model of area; four families have a source of sustainable

livelihood as well as they have developed asset - This is equal opportunity provider for male, women and children too 7. Lessons Learnt: - Windmill is successful in area and this is an exemplary project - After 15 days of installation of windmill, a small technical problem occurred and due

to that plantation got started very late - One person from beneficiary group, Mr. Amanullah has been trained to maintain

windmill and he has purchased kit to repair and maintain windmill if needed - Resources mobilization from National Water management Project, remained a good

experience and they have learnt a lot from our project - Thari people are familiar/use to with local species and they were found reluctant to

plant new plants but now some species grown as a test case and in next 06 months we shall be able to extract the lessons

- Drip irrigation for one acre is costing PK Rs. 46,000 so we purchased only for half acre. This was our mistake during planning phase.

- After completing a year, midterm evaluation could be conducted to measure the results

- In desert during hot weather people (pedestrian) travelers have not source of water in jungle, so this is a source of drinking water in field for round the clock because project beneficiaries have constructed a hut and there are pitchers of water are available

- Wild birds have not source of water in jungle, and when birds fly to nearby settlements then some people hunt them, so this source of water will provide an easy access to birds especially peacocks in harsh weather
