JANUARY 30, 2013 I NEW ZEALAND HARNESS RACING WEEKLY I 15
Lombo Navigator’s win was part of a huge night for trainer Andrew De Campo and stable driver, former Kiwi horseman Matthew White.
They landed a treble with other winners being Clancy Maguire (Badlands Hanover-Soken) and Danieljohn (Blissfull Hall-Aussie Evita).
Daniel John’s win came in the feature of the night, the $50,000 San Simeon Classic (2130m).
The 4-year-old made the most of gate one and his early speed to lead throughout and post a slick 1.56.5 mile rate.
De Campo landed a fourth win on the night when the much-travelled Adda Paternal Suit (Rich And Spoilt-Iwantmydadback) easily won the eighth event.
There was added interest in last Friday’s race with the return to racing after almost three years off the track for former star pacer Bonavista Bay (Rustler Hanover-Our Lady Rena).
The entire, who had won 17 of his 29 starts, had little luck in running and showed encouraging signs to run sixth, beaten just 10m.
Bonavista Bay, trained by Mike Reed, had been sidelined with major problems in suspensory ligaments in both front legs.
Reed was pleased with the effort and added was sure Bonavista Bay would derive plenty of improvement from the outing.
** ** **LAST season’s star 3-year-old Scandalman
(Live Or Die-All In Vain) is travelling far and wide in his preparation for the Chariots Of Fire.
Just recently the Ian Wilson-trained pacer won a ho-hum $3000 race at Canberra.
Then followed heat and final wins in the rich Inter City Pace series at Maitland, near Newcastle.
But few expected Scandalman to bob-up at Junee last Friday night where he put on a
pacing exhibition to win the $14,000 Junee Cup (2170m) by almost 30m in a sizzling 1.58.8 mile rate.
Scandalman has now won four of his five starts this season and 16 of his 27 lifetime starts with earnings approaching $425,000.
Wilson and stable driver Jimmy Douglas failed to complete the feature double at Junee though when Hesa Buzzin could only manage third behind the speedy but injury-plagued Holy Camp Boy (Stature-Demi Joy) in the $10,000 Allan Harpley Memorial (2510m).
** ** **THE powerhouse training team of Emma
Stewart and Clayton Tonkin snared a double at their hometown Ballarat Cup meeting last Friday night.
The first leg came when junior driver David Moran partnered the improving Fearless Leader (Bettor’s Delight-Party Baby) to a tough win in the opening race in a 1.56.1 mile rate for 1710m.
Then last season’s tiny but classy juvenile filly Our Femme Fatale (Art Major-Aluring) made it two-from-two this season in the ninth race.
Our Femme Fatale won the Group 1 Vicbred final last season and clearly has the class to be a factor in upcoming features like the NSW and Victoria Oaks.
It gives Stewart and Tonkin a good backstop to the nominal NSW Oaks favourite Dieing Secret (Live Or Die-Secret Bonus), who has looked fantastic winning her only two starts this season.
Greg Sugars, who drove Our Femme Fatale, enjoyed a big night at Ballarat with three wins.
His other victories came on Narree Belle (Art Major-Vernett) in the second race and Geoff Webster’s promising speedster Real Hammer (Real Desire-Classic Cathy) in race seven.
Art Major filly Our Femme Fatale wins a 3yo pace at Melton for Greg Sugars.
