INTRODUCTION

1. Definition and uses accepted by

grammarians.

a. The enclitic pronoun is the

ob"iectivo pronoun appended to the verb. The

addition of the enclitic does not cauce the

accent of the verb to change.

b. Some forms of the verb require

the enclitic; with other forms it is inad-

missible; while in a large cla~s of cases it

is optional. The optional uses are distinctly

literary and -are CO'.:tparatively rare although

modern mriters allow themselves considerable (1)

freedom in this matter.

c. The enclitic is used with the

imperative: "Venda:;1elo Vd.n But if the

imperative is negative the pronoun must precede:

or clause, the object personal pronoun may

have an enclitic, although this construction is

not nearly as frequently used as the enclitic in

independent clauses. Altogether there were only

twenty one enclitics with verbs of dependent

clauses as compared to one hundred forty-one in

independent clauses preceded by a dependent

clause. Nevertheless, in spite of this scarcity,

all of the authors except Valera use the enclitic

in independent clauses. The verb of u~e dependent

Conclusion

The results of this study justify the

conclusion of ?.Uss Buffum (vide supra p .. 16)

that "the enclitia position of the pronoun is

much more frequent andmuch· broader in scope

than seems to be suspected ly the grammarians«;

and in so far as this study is concerned, her

assumption is oonf irmed that it is the case in

general, with modern writers other than Gald6s,

that «the restrictions laid down in the

accepted grammatical rules are disregarded in

nearly every posnible way"•

So far as my results go· there is no

particular tendency to diminish or increase

the enclitic use in modern times. Larrat one

of the earlier writers, shows a high proportion

of enclitics. Valera has a low percentage.

Valera is the most learned man and the most

careful stylist am.ong the authors studied, and

he considers the proclitic the proper position

for objective pronouns. Valdes does not use

the enclitic to any great extent althouch

he feels that he is at liberty to break a

grammatical rule if he wishes. Pereda, a

contemporary of the authors just mentioned,

uses a high percentage. There seems to be a

tendency to use a h~gher percentage of enclitics

when the subject suggests an archaic style.

Thia is seen in several books such as Perez de

Ayala's "Bajo el signo de Artemisa" and Bicardo

Le6n•a "Casta de Hidalgos" which introduce the

element of chivalry, and the eqnally·archaic

element of the pastoral in Valle-Inol&n•s

nFlor de Santidad"·

The rule prohibiting the use of the en-

clitic in a negative phrase is the one rule

wl~ich was not broken.

Although grammarians permit the enclitto

precedes (a construction which grammarians do

not permit). Another construction (the enclitic

following an adve~b) which grammarians do not

permit appears almost· as often as some of the

uses which they·do sanction.

With reaard to the enclitic with certain .. ) .

tenses the authors studied agree in gener~l

with the rules in so far as they use the

preterite, imperfect, and present indicative

most frequently. But they do break the rules

in using it with the subjunctive mood.
