Harmony Day 2017, Year 7 and Support enjoyed a drumming session and Uncle Steve
cleansed the school with a smoking ceremony.
Year 7’s at Lurnea High school start the year in a very unique way. High school life is very
different to anything these young people have ever known and we acknowledge this
through a transition project that unfolds in the first 3 weeks of high school. Not only is this
time very critical for our newest and youngest members of our school community, but it is
also a critical time for staff. Getting to know the students and forming working relationships
makes for a successful and harmonious educational environment.
So our students embarked on an adventure where they were given the title of ‘Community
Recreational Planners’ and as a group of 4 they had three key tasks to complete:
1. Create a model of their recreational facility design 2. Present and Pitch their Recreational Facility to Liverpool Council 3. Create an Invitation to the opening event of the Community Recreational facility at
Amalfi Park
Week 1 - After placing our students in groups of 4 we set off on two separate excursions to explore
what a great community recreational facility looked like, felt like and sounded like. The first
excursion was a Community Park tour where students experienced 3 different park locations. Our
second excursion was to Sydney Opera House where students pushed their ideas to the limits
through engaging in a creative learning session with four creative artists.
Week 2 - Back at school Year 7 began to pull apart their ideas and start the design process of their
Community Park Facility for Amalfi Park. The design and model process took 4 days and students
developed their skills on how to consolidate ideas, create and sketch ideas and make models to
scale.
Week 3 – Students worked together on their final pitch to Liverpool City Council. Students learnt
how to write an audience appropriate speech and deliver the speech. This all concluded with a
final Exhibition of their work on the final day of the third week.
Welcome to 2017 and hello again to our students, parents, families, friends and
caregivers of the Lurnea High School community!
2016 was another great year in the journey of continuing improvement that the school has
been making over several years! As I reported to you in the term 4 newsletter, we
farewelled a number of staff - some to retirement and others to new positions or new
schools. We have also welcomed new staff in several curriculum areas - Learning and
Support, ESL, Maths, Science, Social Science, TAS and Visual Arts.
The new term has begun with some new system priorities for every student in literacy and
numeracy. From 2017, all students must meet the standard of Band 8 in all areas of the
NAPLAN tests in order to receive their HSC credential. For students who are not able to
meet this standard in any or all parts of their NAPLAN tests from this year, the school will
provide multiple opportunities to complete the different aspects of NAPLAN until the Band
8 level is achieved. These tests are devised by NESA (formerly known as BOSTES) and will be
available online.
To ensure any stress felt by students is alleviated I met with year 9 earlier this term to
discuss the support strategy the school will implement to assist our student to achieve
these standards. The first step is to conduct a trial NAPLAN exam in week 11 to provide
students with a run through and refresher on the various parts of the tests. Staff will mark
the tests and provide feedback to students in the lead up to the actual NAPLAN week in
early term 2.
Should parents have any questions about this, please contact me during school hours to
discuss the matter further.
Term 1 News!
The exciting Year 7 Innovation strategy – student ideas wow local council reps!
Our newest students in year 7 thrilled and inspired parents, Directors Public Schools Maria
Serafim and Nick Magriplis, Federal member and former LHS student Anne Stanley and
two local planning reps from Liverpool Council when they shared their ideas for ways to
improve Amalfi Park for the local community.
The Transition Innovation strategy is now in its third year, and continues to demonstrate
how our newest students problem solve, collaborate and communicate innovative ideas
to a real world problem. In continuing to unpack the driving question of “What Connects
Principals Message- Ms Holland
People?” students completed a field trip to three local parks to gather information and
ideas about what Amalfi Park needs to make it an attractive and engaging public space
that the local community could really enjoy. Students worked in teams to produce
topographic models showcasing their ideas. They also made a pitch (based on the model
of tv show “Shark Tank”) to year 8 who voted on the best ideas for the final presentation.
Students worked fantastically well with each other and the team of teachers who
managed the project throughout the first four weeks of the term.
Congratulations to DP Rene Cahill, Year Adviser Naimah El Ayoubi and an amazing support
team of teachers and SLSOs who helped lead this wonderful learning opportunity to its
success!
The Year Ahead – some new elements
Raising Standards: We began the year with a focus on three key drivers of our journey of
continual improvement as a school. Every student was issued with a copy of the Raising
Standards platform that identifies Learning, Conduct and Dress Code as the drivers for
individual success.
Student learning success is a priority and students should value their learning by aiming to
achieve their personal best. Getting to school on time, starting the day with a healthy
breakfast, and being prepared for learning are simple things that everyone can achieve. To
support improvements in readiness for learning, we have invested in book packs (also sold
as individual items) which are available through the uniform shop and the student operated
VET shop at value-for-money prices. In addition our Breakfast Club operates daily to
provide breakfast basics for hungry students.
The school expects that students will conduct themselves according to our shared values -
with respect, responsibility, fairness, tolerance and understanding. Positive conduct in all
learning environments is important and will support students to make positive progress in
their learning.
Applying the appropriate dress code is also highly valued as it shows the connection and
pride students have with themselves, the school and its standing within the community. We
have worked hard over recent years to build a new uniform look for both seniors and
juniors, including for weekly sport and recreation activities. In 2017 we have added a
fantastic new look school backpack with “LHS” logo and more recently a black baseball cap
(in two styles) with logo. These items are also sold through the VET shop at very reasonable
prices.
Year 10 RoSA program: Year 10 marks the beginning of the Record of Student Achievement
(RoSA) credential. To foster a more meaningful experience for students, we are
implementing a new look to the RoSA program for year 10 this year. This will involve a
change to term 4 teaching and learning, where students will complete some HSC taster
topics as well as the Readiness Program where they will complete some mandatory courses
that are usually done in year 11 such as the Crossroads program and HSC: All my Own Work.
In raising standards through new approaches to learning, year 10 students will attend a
Graduation Ceremony and celebratory dinner upon satisfactory completion of their RoSA
program.
Student Leadership Team: we have conducted the first part of the new look Student
Leadership Team strategy which has resulted in 49 students (representing years 8 – 12)
successfully completing the nomination and interview process. This is a significant increase
in student numbers and is also much more inclusive compared to the former Student
Representative Council strategy. Teachers Ajla Bajic and Mel Gunn are looking forward to
working with our student leaders on a range of projects, including a leadership camp!
Speech Pathology program: as mentioned last year, we have employed the services of a
Speech Pathology team to provide targeted learning assistance to year 7 in a range of
literacy and oral language skills. Already the team – Judy and Bella with support from team
leader Rebecca – in conjunction with our Learning and Support staff have identified 65% of
year 7 with a range of language disorders. The team will gather further data about student
learning needs and provide professional learning for staff so that we can more effectively
support students.
Best wishes to you all for a happy and productive 2017

Year 7 started their high school journey in the library working on a Project Based Learning
Task “What connects people”. Students enjoyed visiting 3 community parks and the Sydney
Opera House in their first few weeks of high school! Students worked exceptionally well
and showcased their final projects at the Exhibition held on Friday 17th February.
Students have settled into their classes for 2017. The class names are named after
inspirational people and are called: 7 Mandela, 7 Winfrey, 7 Fearnley and 7 Gandhi. Please
remind your child to check their timetable in their diaries each night and make sure all
books and equipment are packed for the next day. The work load in high school can be
quite overwhelming to some students, predominantly in Term 1 when it is substantially
more than what was expected in Year 6. It is important that your child uses their time
effectively and plans ahead to make sure they are able to complete and submit all tasks on
time. Please encourage your child to ask their teacher for assistance if required.
Students have commenced Peer Support which is a fortnightly program run by Year 10 Peer
Support Leaders. This program provides students with a supportive learning environment to
develop their skills in different areas such as communication, social skills, conflict resolution
and resilience. Year 7 and their Peer Leaders have made strong connections and will
continue to work together throughout the year to make positive contributions to their class
work and social aspects of high school.
Year 7 are enjoying Sport and Recreation on Wednesday afternoons and are encouraged to
remember to wear their PE uniform to school every Wednesday. Congratulations to Imran
Sakr and Ethan Kim, who represented Lurnea High School at the Zone Swimming Carnival.
Well done boys!

A reminder to all parents/guardians that our Homework Centre runs every Tuesday and
Thursday from 3pm – 5pm which enables students to complete any homework and
assessment tasks with the support of their teachers in each subject area. This initiative is
free and all students are encouraged to attend.
Students have been provided with an Expression of Interest note for a Camp in Term 4 to
celebrate the success of completing their first year of high school. I believe that this will be
a fantastic opportunity for all Year 7 and a great memory for when they leave high school.
Please indicate whether you are interested in sending your child and return the note to Ms
El Ayoubi in the PDHPE staffroom as soon as possible.
It has been a fantastic start to the year and I look forward to working with Year 7
throughout the year.
Year 7 in the library designing Amalfi
Park
Year 8 has had a great kickstart to 2017. Students have been involved in the swimming carnival this year with many more carnivals coming along the way where all students can build their relationships with each other as a cohort, participating in a whole school event. Some students have been attending workshops including a handful of girls in the SCREAM workshop where they have been all learning to manage their emotions and express them in a healthy manner. The workshops have been working really well for the girls as they are becoming more attentive towards their actions and the consequences that follow. It’s wonderful to see that the girls are taking on all the advice on board. Students have also been taking part in the Sky High program with many exciting excursions and opportunities to challenge and express themselves, a bush walk in the blue Mountains for 5 hours has the students getting ready to discover their physical strength and mindset.
Year 8 – Ms Khammarath
Welcome back to another year of learning and fun to our Year 9 students and their families.
2017 sees students’ progress with their education to Stage 5 curriculum. This also means that
students have now begun their chosen elective subjects, being able to learn and develop skills in
areas of their own personal interests.
Students in Year 9 will also undertake the NAPLAN tests this year. We are working with the
students in order to get them ready for the tests, both in relation to their literacy and numeracy
skills, as well as focusing on their wellbeing. Students will undertake a series of trial NAPLAN tests
in week 11 of this term in order to feel prepared and ready for the real thing in Term 2.
Throughout the year students will again be presented with many sporting and performing arts
opportunities. There has already been much success from Year 9 students at the Swimming
Carnival, with many making it to the Zone Carnival, and Danielle Townley progressing not only to
Regional but to the State level in Week 10. Many Year 9 students have also represented Lurnea in
a variety of different Knock Out sports teams. Students in this year group are also preparing for
their performances in the Wakakirri dance competition and The Addams Family school musical to
be performed later in the year.
A group of students in Year 9 have also begun Links to Learning, a weekly program that encourages
student engagement and helps increase their communication, planning and goal setting skills.
Students spend time working in groups and one-to-one with a professionally trained mentor to
prepare them to enhance their time left as students and plan for their future after school.
It has been a fantastic start to the year and I look forward to working with Year 9 again throughout
2017.
Year 9 - Ms Stoakes
Year 10 is an important year of schooling. Students make exciting educational and life choices for
the years ahead. As a year advisor I will make sure that my year group is aware of the choices that
are available and are given all the support they need to make these decisions. The year has started
very well with most students doing the right thing and being focused in their learning. They have
participated in the swimming carnival which was a great success.
In Year 10, students complete their study towards the Record of Student Achievement (RoSA).
They study English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, PDHPE and three electives.
Some Year 10 students will be taking part in the Fast Forward Program this year and are active
members of the peer support team and the school leadership team.
Towards the end of Year 10, students continuing to the HSC must decide which subjects to
study. They have completed “All my Own Work” modules to prepare them for senior classes.
Our school careers adviser can help students to make educational choices, define a career
direction and to select and prepare for future study and training.
The Homework centre is also available for students on Tuesdays and Thursdays from three to five
in the afternoon for extra revision and completion of assessment tasks.
Realistic goal setting and effective time management will make the year less stressful and more
enjoyable. Students should ensure that they use a diary to record assessment dates and daily
requirements.
Counselling staff are available at Lurnea High for students who may need some extra support with
personal or school issues.
I look forward to working with my Year 10 cohort this year and wish them every success with their
studies.
Year 10- Mr Anand
Congratulations to Year 11 who have made a fantastic start to their senior school life.
Eight girls were recently selected to attend an ABCN Focus Leadership Program and
attended the first of three sessions in the city. The Australian Business and Community
Network (ABCN) is a not-for-profit organisation that connects business with education
through mentoring and partnership programs. ABCN’s aim is to provide students with the
skills and work experience they require to make sound personal, educational and vocational
choices. This is achieved through structured programs that involve corporate volunteers
mentoring students in the workplace and business partnering with schools.
Thank you to Norton Rose Fullbright Global Law Firm for hosting these mentoring sessions.
Mentors from the firm gave an insight to the corporate world and how the mentors came
to work at the firm. Norton Rose Fullbright is situated in Grosvenor Place, George St
Sydney. The girls were delighted sitting in the boardroom on the 18th floor looking out at
Sydney’s magnificent views.

Last Swimming Carnival EVER!!!
2017 has well and truly started and already so much has happened. Year 12 have
participated in a number of events already including Lurnea High School’s Annual
Swimming Carnival at Macquarie Fields Leisure Centre. With it being the last swimming
carnival that Year 12 will partake in, they decided that they needed a theme to make it as
memorable as possible. It was decided as a group
that a Hawaiian theme was perfect, with many
students getting into the spirit of things in their
colourful Hawaiian skirts and lays. The inflatables
race was one to remember, with many students
finding themselves wrestling with their inflatable
animal to stay afloat and laughter coming from the
side of the pool. Many students cooked up a storm
with our sausage sizzle and others proved to be
effective salespeople. There were also students who
were House Captains and Vice Captains, making the
school proud of their house spirit and enthusiasm
throughout the day. Well done to all the students who not only attended the carnival but
also participated in events during the day.
Year 12’s fundraising efforts have not gone unnoticed with our Valentine’s Day Fundraiser
proving to be a huge success. Year 12 worked well together to take orders from staff and
students and deliver them on Valentine’s Day, ensuring that they kept some orders
anonymous. This cohort has also kindly
donated Easter Eggs and Bunnies for our
Easter Hampers to be raffled off during
our week 11 assembly. Many students
have taken time out of their day to sell
raffle tickets and I’m sure this will pay off
when it comes to subsidising some
important events such as the Year 12
Formal later on this year. Looking ahead,
we will continue to fundraise next term,
with the Cadbury chocolate boxes soon
to be arriving. We would like to thank the staff and students who have already shown so
much support with our fundraising, your support is greatly appreciated.
Year 12 – Ms Dennaoui
Here’s a sneak peak of our group photo
As well as making memories and partaking in these events, Year 12 have also been working
hard in their classes. Many students are working on major works, ensuring that they are
prioritising their time to ensure the completion of their major work before the due date.
Others have been utilising the learning centre to complete assessment tasks and prepare
for exams. To assist with this, Year 12 will participate in a study day with Elevate at the
beginning of Term 2 to assist them with their preparation of the HSC examinations. It will
not only focus on the skills that are required when preparing for assessments/exams but
also the mental preparation needed when completing the HSC. With these skills and the
assistance of the awesome teachers at Lurnea High School, Year 12 is travelling in the right
direction to achieving positive outcomes in the near future.
Keep working hard year 12! The countdown is on and before we know it, you will have your
graduation caps and gowns on and we will be announcing the Class of 2017.

Lurnea High School VET is in the process to
expand its “Practical and Simulation” program
with the objective of providing opportunities to
students from all VET Frameworks to have a
purpose built space that will be known as the
“VET shop”. Students from all VET frameworks
will use this shed to operate a business.
The Lurnea High School “Vet Shop” project will enable all students to improve their employability
skills through utilization of technology based trading systems such as POS equipment with barcode
scanners and assistive planning software. Students will also develop skills in customer service,
management techniques, merchandising, business operations, money handling, inventory control,
spread sheets, databases, marketing etc. Students using this innovative learning environment will
be able to utilize all their classroom knowledge and integrate it with
the real life practice that the VET Shop will provide. The students
will increase their reading, writing, comprehension and numeracy
skills which will help them obtain classroom subject proficiency.
The students Information and Digital Technology students have
been involved in designing the logo for the VET Shop. The logo was
designed after collaboratively brainstorming ideas with Retail
Services students on what the trading name of the shop will be. The
logo that was developed incorporated the Aboriginal art design and
symbols to promote unity and the educational journey amongst the
diverse background students at our school.
The students have also designed merchandise such as
school hats that are available on sale to students and
parents of the school. This project saw students
involved in the process to take initiative in taking
surveys, designing, producing and marketing the final
product. The hats are selling at the VET Shop for a
special retail price of $10.

It has been an exciting year so far at Lurnea High School in the development of the new
Student Leadership Team for 2017. Students from Years 8-12 were given the opportunity to
express interest in being a part of the new and innovative Student Leadership Team. It was
a great success, with 46 applications received from across all years. With the help of the
existing senior leaders including School Captains Bianca Warford and Taha Alameddin, Vice
Captains Alanna McKew and Lachlan Weller and Prefect Lisa Ho, interviews were conducted
and all applicants were successful in attaining a position on the team.
The students have expressed great interest in being a part of the Lurnea High School
Student Leadership Team and have brought forward new and innovative ways in which to
further involve themselves within both the school community and beyond.
On Tuesday, 7th March 10 Student Leaders participated in a GRIP Student Leadership
Conference at Sydney Olympic Park. This workshop concentrated specifically on training
student leaders. The students came away from the conference with new skills, new
perspectives and new ideas for making a positive contribution to Lurnea High School as a
leader.
A Badging Ceremony as well as an Orientation Day will take place at the start of Term 2,
where students will be able to come together and plan for the year ahead. This will be an
opportunity for students from all years to work together and plan on how to implement
their ideas and goals for the year.
We are looking forward to a great year with a great group of students who are proud to
represent Lurnea High School.
