    YOU SAID IT

    CUSTOMER L VE

WORLD VEGAN MONTHNovember is world Vegan month and commemorates the founding of the vegan society in November 1944. Join in a community of people pledging to eat vegan for a week or the whole month. First time vegan eaters are surprised at the array of delicious food options food one doesnt usually think of adding to the menu. Think beetroot hummus, nut butters and nut milk, sprouts and micro herbs, scrambled tofu, vegan sausages, hash browns, essene bread, roasted veggies, falafel and more. Log onto http://www.veganoutreach.org for ideas.

VEGGIE POWERHats off to 18 year old Constantia Waldorf scholar Deva Argue for fulfi lling her lifelong ambition of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. Deva has always followed a strict vegetarian diet that excludes eggs but includes a small amount of diary like yoghurt and chocolate.

Being a vegetarian doesnt mean subsisting on almonds but being mindful about a balanced and healthy diet with vegetables that contain protein. My personal favorites are broccoli, green peas, artichokes and spinach - and of course, nuts, seeds and legumes. I also eat soya and Frys products for protein. And of course, bananas are the ultimate energy food perfect for hard work outs.

Ive never been tempted to eat meat. There are so many yummy vegetarian meals like melanzane, Indian curries, Italian-style pastas and Oriental style stir-frys. Supplements have also never been necessary to maintain my energy levels or athletic ability. According to registered nutritionist Caryn Davies, nutritional health cant simply be justifi ed or guaranteed according to dietary exclusions or inclusions. It is the overall balance of the diet which is important, and a well-planned vegetarian diet can certainly be nutritionally complete. As with any type of diet, every body is literally quite different and every athlete will have unique dietary needs.

We would like to thank Leesette Turner for emailing us with her feedback and have awarded her three free smoothies for her effort. This is what she said.

    My recent great Wellness experience:

I always buy a smoothie from Wembley but you never think about the point at which you become a regular. Last week I popped into the Wellness Caf at Wembley after a week in bed with flu, still feeling awful and not really up to even choosing a juice. Yannik was so professional - not only did he recognise me, and ask me how I was but went on to recommend a juice (I said I wanted something sour!) with loads of ginger. He insisted I taste it before I took it away to check that the choice was correct! Brilliant personal service. Even better when you feel awful and someone cares enough to make the difference! And it really did...

WE TRIED ITIn pursuit of a summer ready body Rouxmia Bougas took herself off to the Romney Park Hotel and Spa to try out a body sculpting treatment called UChique. She reports.

Summer is creeping up and if you arent keen on going through a detox or spending hours in a gym, this new and effortless technology is for you. It is a brand new anti aging and body sculpting treatment designed to make you look years younger and get rid of cellulite. It uses a machine called the Alma Laser with ultra sound and radio frequency to remove pigmentation and tighten winter fl ab. It is the most relaxing and nicest feeling ever and, as far as I am concerned, the most comfortable and effective way to tone your body and get gorgeous. It targets areas with wrinkles, pigmentation, sagging skin and helps move fat deposits and cellulite. Eunice Grobler did my treatment and she was fabulous. Trust me, you feel as though you could lie there all day. It has a therapeutic heat massage effect. The results are immediately visible and after just one session you can feel it on your body especially if you target your butt, like I did. It is safe and painless. A face treatment takes between 20 and 30 minutes and the body can take up to an hour. It is affordable and very effective. I would defi nitely go back for a few more sessions.

BE SKIN CANCER WISESouth Africa has the second highest recorded rate of skin cancer. If you have any concerns about your skin, take adequate precautions by visiting a dermatologist for a skin check. This involves a quick and simple body scan to analyse moles, spots or skin abnormalities. Skin cancer can be dealt with effectively with early detection. We spoke to local dermatologist Dr Moodley operating from the Christian Barnard Memorial Hospital in the city centre for some advice. For a melanoma check on moles he recommends following the ABCD rule. Melanoma may present as a change in an existing mole but can also occur on normal skin. Any part of the body, even parts of the body that are usually covered including the feet need to be checked.

It is recommended you go for a check up if:A. your mole is asymmetrical. B. there is irregularity in the border C. there is colour variability (varying shades of brown, blue, black and pink)D. the diameter is greater than 6 mm

If a spot develops and doesnt heal in three weeks, it needs to be checked.

Dr Moodley is a dermatologist with a medical, surgical and cosmetic dermatology practice He is Fellowship trained in Mohs Micrographic Surgery, a state of the art treatment for skin cancer, and has extensive experience in Dermatology having worked as a specialist in the UK and South Africa. • Doryce has done so much for the aromatherapy industry and is truly an inspiration. This is the story of the Aromatic Apothecary, the union between two families and the delightful working relationship and environment that has resulted.

After spending time studying and qualifying as a pharmacist, Doryce was never really sold on the idea of dispensing a pill for every ill and after ten years in hospital and retail pharmacy she wanted something more. I sat on my bed one day and asked

God or the mystery out there. what do you want from my life? Almost immediately the word aromatherapy came to mind. Her fi rst fl irt with aromatherapy was in a book called How to Banish Cellulite Forever. Instructions on how to make a bath or massage oil with detoxifying essential oils, got her going. She went on a course, started massaging from home and fell in love with making up different recipes. On a whim she made bath oils to sell at a market, she fi lled up medicine bottles with an anti-stress oil recipe and they were a hit. The next week she doubled her quantity and sold out again. Even husband Clive was roped into a market and he too came back with an empty basket.

A BLEND OF TWO FAMILIES Many years ago when the kids were little Clive and Doryce Sher had an angel sent to them in the form of a domestic worker. Hilda looked after the house and their two sons allowing them to go to work every day. When Hilda wasnt looking after them, the boys pretty much grew up at markets between bottles of fabulous smelling fragrances. At that stage, the Shers had no idea Hildas extended family would become integral to the Aromatic Apothecary business. They also didnt know their son would be actively involved and it would grow into a thriving operation employing 17 people, four agents and three part-time staff supplying over 300 health shops and outlets with two of their own retail kiosks.

did you know?Aromatherapy includes both inhaling and absorption of essential oils through topical application. It is believed the inhalation of essential oils stimulates the part of the brain connected to smell - the olfactory system; a signal is sent to the limbic system of the brain that controls emotions and retrieves learned memories. This causes chemicals to be released which make the person feel relaxed, calm, or even stimulated.

My most favourite in-store department is the one fi lled with bottles of aromatherapy. There is something so exotic, uplifting and mood enhancing about these fl ower and plant oils. We are particularly excited to feature Aromatic Apothecary spearheaded by the amazing Doryce Sher, master of olfactory ingenuity who can mix up a potion for almost any type of affl iction.

MEET THE TEAM Clive Sher oversees the marketing,

sales and personnel division. His marketing skills come from both the pharmaceutical industry and the corporate world before he joined his wife at Aromatic Apothecary. He is also a qualifi ed massage therapist and has completed several counselling courses.

Doryce Sher handles the fi nancial and product development division and oversees production and public relations. After working in pharmacy and being troubled by over use of prescription and over the counter medicines she welcomed a different therapeutic solution that was safe and pleasurable. Doryce has incredible insight into aromatherapeutic products and their extensive benefi ts.

Daniel Sher has added youthful passion and ideas to the business, growing the brands image, driving it through social media marketing and delving into the development of a new easy-to-use online shopping site for Aromatic Apothecary.

Lumka Hildas daughter rapidly learnt how to blend and mix oils professionally. Her attuned aroma nose is an advantageous skill in the business.

Ndimphiwe Hildas son is the chief driver, he knows all the retail outlets, can merchandise and educate suppliers on products during delivery.

Pat is Hildas youngest child. She studied computers and is an admin wizard responding to emails, dealing with customers and suppliers and running the offi ce.

Thami manufactures all products in the range and oversees label quantities control.

Noni (as she is affectionately called) makes all products in the range.

Boki works as a general assistant and is trained to assemble the Scentstation, our unique aromatherapy burner.

Vuyo is the admin assistant to Pat (cousin to Boki) and operates Pastel, deals with customers, couriers and more.

Siyanda Hildas grandchild, besides helping everyone he is learning skills from Pastel, to manufacture to packing.

FROM MARKETS TO MARKETINGA humble start selling bottles of aromatherapy at markets in 1992 led to formalizing the business and trading from a barrow at the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront in Cape Town. In 1998 Aromatic Apothecary opened the fi rst exclusive aromatherapy shop in South Africa where the lure of aromas wafting down the shopping aisles attracted numerous customers. The shop was a huge success. These days Aromatic Apothecary is still at the V & A trading from a kiosk. They also have a successful kiosk at the Gateway shopping centre in Durban. Besides markets, Expos and kiosks Aromatic Apothecary has an extensive wholesale business. Growth along the way included opening and closing a few shops but their core business is on expos and wholesale along with online orders.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Immense help, training, encouragement and career development has been a natural part of Aromatic Apothecarys business ethic. After a fi re in Gugulethu burnt down the rented shack Hilda was staying in, Clive drove to Gugulethu at 3am to help out - inspiring the idea that Hilda and her children need their own home. A few months later, Hilda bought a beautiful home in Gugulethu with the help of a government subsidy, a gift from Clive and Doryce, and a small bond which they paid off in fi ve years. Doryce and Clive have helped their staff with interest free loans enabling team members to own their own homes. They have supported weddings, births, schooling and more. Lumka and her husband through Aromatics assistance have built a Habitat for Humanity house. Their staff is so much a part of their family. The Shers attribute the success of their company to their amazing staff.

DORYCES FAVOURITE BLENDAromatic Apothecary produces a wide range of products. There are numerous formulations, everything from pain relief, sinus relief, muscle roll-ons, rub ins and spray-on to products like HeadAcare, Scrubzit, Burngo, Close shave, Feet treaty foot cream, room sprays, incense, diffuser oils, anti-bug, products for children, for ageing, for relaxation and so much more. Doryces personal favourite is a blend called Silent Moments. It has chamomile, lavender, neroli and geranium. When I fi rst started mixing oils I made up this mixture, put a few drops in my bath and had one of the best sleeps I had ever had. It really worked well

therapeutically. Besides that, the mix of the oils creates a new aroma the concept of the whole is more than the sum of its parts, just like the whole of aromatic (the people) has created more than the sum of its parts.

OUR PHILOSOPHYAromatic Apothecary makes products that are authentic and helpful in a world of quickfi x medications. Our philosophy comes from the Dalai Lama Our job is to help people in a pleasant manner and if it doesnt help them at least it wont harm them.

WAKE UP & SMELL THE FLOWERS Everyone knows the huge feel good factor in smelling a beautiful fl ower but aromatherapy goes much further than that. Plant, bark and fl ower extracts have been scientifi cally verifi ed as therapeutic aids. Even more, when used correctly, they do no harm and bring great pleasure. There is nothing like a long lavender or patchouli bath to relax and de-stress. While most people think of aromatherapy oils as boosting mood, they also work for specifi c ailments. Essential oils used in aromatherapy have a different composition compared to other herbal products because the distillation used in aromatherapy recovers the lighter volatile molecules.

STAR PRODUCTKeep fragrance dispensing throughout your house with this incredible Scentstation. There is no need to burn out candles, you simply plug it in and it warms the bowl allowing the oils to heat and waft through your house or offi ce space. Experiment with it yourself. Find the aroma you like best, plug it in and see how it uplifts your mood.

ESSENTIAL OILS When applied to the body, diluted in a carrier or base oil (since essential oils are very concentrated) , the essential oils are absorbed rapidly through the skin into the tissues, muscles and are metabolised locally. Aromatherapists claim there is a synergy between the body and aromatic oils as their precursors are molecules made during photosynthesis in plants, they are already in harmony with our bodies.

  • Edvige Antonia Albina Maino was born in Lusiana, a dozy hamlet nestled against the verdurous slopes of the Italian lower Alps. Her father Stefano, owned a building company while her mother Paolo ran their modest household.

When Albina was about 9 years old, Stefano and Paolo moved the family to Orbassano, a small village in Piedmont. The Mainos had ambitions for their daughters, and enrolled them in a convent nine miles away, in Giaveno. Albina chose an academic course and had private lessons when needed. To Albina, this was a time of great simplicity both at home and school. She is remembered as being conscientious, curious, thoughtful and intelligent. When 18, Albina and her eldest sister were sent to Cambridge to study English. I suspect sister Anouchka was there to keep an eye on the beautiful Albina.

This was the swinging sixties. The Beatles were turning young woman into shrieking, possessed, twisting sisters. It was a time when peace, freedom and protest were all in harmony with sex, drugs and Rock n Roll. Across the pond, waves of anti-war protests were sweeping through the USA. The nation was torn and punch-drunk, and Rose Kennedy had just packed her black frock away when Bobby Kennedy was shot. It would have been a time of great anxiety for old Stefano, sitting in the quiet of the shadows of the Italian Alps his daughters far away in the land of the Jack the Ripper and the hideous Morris Minor.Albina found work in a Greek Restaurant popular with students. For a simple girl from

Italys North, the buzz would have been intoxicating. Albina would have relished the cobbled charm of her academic surroundings, and been enchanted by the variety of cultures co-existing in the womb of English academia. But one night everything changed when, as clich would have it, a tall dark stranger walked into the restaurant. The smitten young woman could not have imagined the fi ne-boned man with the piercing gaze and lightning smile was her ticket into a life of love, power and tragedy.

Rajiv Ratna Gandhi was the eldest son of Indira and Feroze Gandhi. He was sent to London to complete his
