Mayor’s Welcome Welcome to the Centennial edition of the 22nd annual Harmony Arts Festival in West Vancouver. This year’s festival runs from August 3–12, and has something for everyone. The festival is a celebration of art–performing, visual and culinary arts–and will showcase the work of more than 400 talented artists and artisans. There are also over 100 musical and dance performances and the always-popular Art Market will return on each of the festival’s two weekends.
The festival is more than a celebration of artists; it’s also a celebration of culture and community and a perfect venue to continue our conversation about what the future of Ambleside should look like. We already have a thriving arts community on the Ambleside waterfront and as we move forward with revitalization initiatives, we want to ensure that Ambleside’s artistic legacy is woven into the fabric of the future. I look forward to continuing the conversation and hearing from members of the public about what the Ambleside of tomorrow means to them.
The success of the Harmony Arts Festival is due largely to volunteers, staff, and sponsors who work so hard to make it happen every year. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the festival’s presenting sponsor for the past 11 years, Odlum Brown, without whom the festival could not be the marquee event that it is. In West Vancouver, we are lucky to have a private sector that cares so much about the community.
I look forward to all of the sights, sounds, and savory samples at this year’s festival, not to mention the Grosvenor Waterfront Lounge. Enjoy the festival! See you all on the waterfront!
Mayor Michael Smith

GORDON DAVIS Gordon paints for leisure and enjoyment. He uses lots of color, no clouds or dull grays and his theme is always happiness and joy. Like someone said
“I don’t know what it is but your paintings make me feel good.” Most of his work is pleine aire landscapes and fl owers, the things people hunt to see. He verges on the side of expressionism pushing a little away from reality. His theme is “Happiness Reigns.”

Like a multi-ethnic gathering of friends, this seven member band has created a sound that evokes the early days of latin funk (Santana, War, etc.), while adding their own blend of rock and funk grooves. 5:45 p.m. The Rakish AnglesBritish Columbia’s Sunshine Coast is a tranquil neck-of-the-woods beside the Pacifi c Ocean that resonates with a woody timbre. This unique place conjured up a defi nitive sonic quartet called The Rakish Angles. Newgrass, Latin, gypsy-jazz, old-time music. None of these styles were born there, yet they have given inspiration to the vision of these fi ercely local musicians, who hail from various locations around Canada.
8:45 p.m. Maria in the Shower Vancouver’s favourite vaudevillian quartet is a band that embraces contradiction wholeheartedly. The band revels in the fun and challenge of making old music feel new, writing and

Described as “part Vaudeville, part cabaret, part punk and part folk” (Vancouver Sun), their musical approach is a simple but potent alchemy, marrying traditional folk and jazz with lyrics that explore fundamental human questions and delivering it with pure fun and energy.
