CO-WORKER APPRECIATION WEEK This year, employees at Harley Marine Services celebrated the 8th Annual Co-Worker Appreciation

Week (CWAW) from November 3-7. In all of their ports, each company recognized a different depart-

ment every day, allowing those employees to select an activity of their choice to promote recognition

of their fellow co-workers for all the hard work they do throughout the year.

Pizza parties and pancake breakfasts, chili cook-offs and taco lunches were just a few of the planned

activities. Every port customized the celebration to their departments and locations. In Seattle, there

was even a mobile espresso truck serving coffee to employees as they walked into work, in cups

hand-illustrated by HMS employees. It was an exciting week that demonstrated the level of apprecia-

tion and camaraderie all of us here at Harley Marine have for our company and co-workers.

In addition to these fun hands-on activities, employees also participated in daily trivia and raffle con-

tests. We also held our annual food drive fundraiser, collecting non-perishable food items to donate

during the holiday season. Along with the food items donated by employees, Harley Marine Services

also donated $1,000.00 to local food banks in each regional location where their companies are

It was a fun and busy week, highlighting the leadership and teamwork that demonstrate why the employees

at Harley Marine enjoy working at this great company. This proved to be one of the best Co-Worker Appreci-

ation celebrations yet and we’re excited to see what next year’s CWAW will bring!

DR. ROBERT J. BEALL CHRISTENING

On Monday, November 10th, Harley Marine Services hosted the christening of the barge DR. ROBERT J.

BEALL at Zidell Marine, near Portland, OR. The DR. ROBERT J. BEALL, named for the President & CEO of

the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, is one part of the first articulated tug and barge (ATB) in the Harley Marine fleet.

An articulated tug and barge combines the traditional towing methods and that of a small tanker.

During the reception Jay Zidell, President of Zidell Marine Corporation and Harley Franco, CEO of Harley Ma-

rine Services served as the event hosts, greeting those in attendance and delivering speeches prior to the chris-

tening.

Father Pat Brennan of St. Mary’s Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception performed the blessing of the barge,

ensuring the strength of the vessel and the safety

of all those onboard during its voyages. Kari

Rose, a patient of cystic fibrosis, christened the

vessel.

Following the ceremony and reception, lunch was

enjoyed at McCormick & Schmicks in downtown

Portland.

Harley Marine Services is honored to name this

vessel after a very dedicated and passionate indi-

vidual who has worked tirelessly to help find a

cure for cystic fibrosis.

Harley Marine Services is honored to name the newest addition to our fleet after a truly re-

markable doctor and leader, Dr. Robert J. Beall.

Robert J. Beall, Ph.D., began his tenure at the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in 1980 as Executive Vice

President for Medical Affairs and for the past 20 years has served as President and Chief Executive

Officer. Under Dr. Beall’s leadership, the CF Foundation has significantly advanced the search for a

cure for cystic fibrosis and helped dramatically improve the length and quality of life for people with

CF. Prior to joining the CF Foundation, Dr. Beall was on the medical school faculty of Case Western

Reserve University in Cleveland, and worked at the National Institutes of Health, where he managed

a large portion of NIH’s cystic fibrosis program.

During Dr. Beall’s tenure, the CF Foundation has become one of the most respected voluntary

health organizations in the country. The CF Foundation’s innovative “venture philanthropy” ap-

proach to drug development, in which the CF Foundation invests in research collaborations with

pharmaceutical companies to help bring new therapies to patients, has been emulated by other non-

profit health organizations. The creation in the 1980s of a national network of research centers of

excellence, the Research Development Program, attracted many leading institutions and first-rate

scientists to the CF research effort. This collaborative network contributed to the identification of the

CF gene in 1989. Since that discovery, the CF Foundation has focused on translating knowledge

about the gene and the basic defect in CF into the development of novel CF treatments. In 1998,

the CF Foundation launched its ground-breaking Therapeutics Development Program, a unique co-

alition of industry, academics and the CF Foundation that is directed at speeding the discovery and

development of cutting-edge new CF drugs.

Nearly every CF drug available today was made possible because of the CF Foundation’s business

model, most recently Kalydeco, the first drug to treat the underlying cause of the disease in a seg-

ment of the CF population. The CF Foundation maintains a robust pipeline of potential CF therapies

that target the disease from every angle, and the prospects for a cure for cystic fibrosis have never

been higher.

We are proud to stand by Dr. Beall and continue “Cruisin’ for a Cure” as we support the Cystic Fi-

brosis Foundation to find the cure for cystic fibrosis.

HMS MENTORING PROJECT by Victoria Hall-Clinton, HSQE Coordinator

Harley Marine Services’ mentoring program allows employees the freedom to shape their personal

experiences in any way that will help them to become the most successful. This is achieved by offer-

ing employees the option of multiple and separate mentoring partnerships besides the standard tradi-

tional one-on-one mentoring approach. Many employees have already begun to take advantage of

these opportunities to build partnerships that best benefit their needs and goals.

Director of HSQ, Tim Kline and HMS Port Captain, Neil Billingsley have capitalized on the flexibility of

the program by engaging in a peer mentoring program. Peer mentoring is a form of mentorship that

usually takes place between a person who has encountered a specific experience and a person who

is new to that experience. This situation is beneficial because peers play a role in not only creating a

supportive network, but also in enhancing learning experiences and personal development.

If you have not yet done so, please choose a mentor, fill out the application form, and begin building

your partnerships in ways that best fit your schedule, personality, and abilities.

HAZWOPER TRAINING By Andre Nault, Safety Manager - California Region

Millennium Maritime and Westoil Marine Services recently completerd their second bi-annual boom

deployment drill and HAZWOPER Refresher training in Los Angeles. The OSPR representative was

very pleased with the drill, specifically commenting on the good radio communication between boom

skiff and the crew on deck as they deployed the boom.

There were 16 participants including captains, tankermen, engineers, deckhands and shoreside man-

agers in attendance. In addition to deploying the boom within the allotted time requirement, they also

conducted skiff handling/boom maneuvering training for several newer crew members.

Everyone attended a debriefing afterwards, then reviewed the ‘Bunkering Best Practices’ DVD while

enjoying some pizza.

Special thanks to Reed Daoedsjah, Michael Castagnola, Brian Vartan, and Michael Golden for their

excellent assistance and guidance throughout the drill. Thanks to all who participated - you guys are

the best!

WELCOME TUG BROOKLYN!

Please welcome the newest addition to our fleet in the Gulf, the Tug BROOKLYN. The tug was origi-

nally built in 1975 at Halter Marine and named the PEGGY SHERIDAN. Later it was sold to APEX

Marine and renamed the BROOKLYN.

Harley Marine Services is now operating

the BROOKLYN for Apex per a vessel

management agreement. HMS is re-

sponsible for managing the crew and for

maintenance of the tug.

Environmental Achievement

Award

Harley Marine Services is proud to announce the list of vessels

that have received the prestigious Environmental Achievement

Award this year from the Chamber of Shipping of America.

Eligibility is determined by having no spills or fines in the last year

of operations. Additionally a vessel must be at least 3 years of

age. We extend our congratulations to all of these vessels, how-

ever, it is necessary to contextualize the aforementioned achieve-

ments.

The list to the right states the vessel and number of years it has

operated incident free. These vessels operate under strenuous

circumstances throughout the United States and collectively have

delivered 215 operating years without incident.

The gross number of years without an incident speaks to Harley

Marine Services’ steadfast commitment to the highest standards

of environmental excellence in every facet of its operations.

HEALTHY EATING AND DRINKING DURING THE WINTER HOLIDAYS

Healthy eating during the holiday season may seem impossible. In fact, the average American gains a pound or two during the holiday season. This weight tends to stick and accumulate over the years. But don’t fret! There are ways to help manage the holiday food temptations while still participating in the joys of the holi-day season.

Tips to keep unwanted weight off during the holidays:

Plan ahead! Eat healthier in the days leading up to a major holiday feast.

Bring healthy dishes to holiday events. As the host of the party you can offer healthy dishes but as a guest

you have less control! Offer to bring a dish that you know you will enjoy and will provide a healthy option for

the meal.

Eat the ‘best for you’ options first, and then go back for more. This will help fill you up on healthier foods

before overindulging on the less healthy options.

Do not skip meals in preparation for a later meal! This will just lead to overeating.

Keep moving. The holidays can be a great time to take a brisk walk with family members or play a game of

basketball with the kids. Physical activity reduces stress and gives us more energy, something everybody

needs when dealing with the end of year business.

Holidays and Drinking:

Holidays tend to heighten alcohol intake as there are more special occasions where alcohol is offered. Many holiday drinkers do not normally drink and therefore have a lower tolerance. Furthermore, people are dealing with the increased pressures of planning for the holiday season and may feel more pressure to have a drink. This is why it is important to pay attention to these points about holiday drinking:

Roads can be more dangerous and people are usually in a rush. Adding alcohol to the mix is a recipe for

disaster.

Alcohol adds unwanted extra calories and lowers inhibitions which can lead to overeating.

Avoid holiday drinking related problems:

Obviously, the best thing to do is to resist the pressure to drink, especially in excess.

Offer nonalcoholic beverages at holiday events.

Plan ahead and decide how many drinks you are going to have before you start drinking.

If you choose to drink, ALWAYS make sure you have a designated driver or take a ride service such as a

taxi, Uber or Lyft.

WHY I LOVE FATTY FOODS

It is probably safe to say that there is a lot of conflicting information about fats in our country today. Are fats good

or bad? What kind of fats should I be eating? Should I even be eating fat? What about cholesterol? Let’s take

this opportunity to dispel some of this conflicting information in this article and the ones to follow. First off, we will

focus on the benefits of healthful fats and which ones to include in your diet for optimum health.

Healthy fats and oils are essential for our health. Here are a few of their

benefits:

Fats satisfy our appetites.

Fats aid in healthy hormone production in the body.

Fats greatly enhance mineral absorption in the diet.

Fats provide a long-burning source of energy – especially for the heart!

Fats build healthy bile; a substance made by the liver, stored and released by the gallbladder to aid in optimal fat digestion and emulsification.

Fats help to nourish every cell in our body by providing building blocks to main-tain healthy cell membranes. (Nutrients in; Wastes out!)

Fats aid in the formation of anti-inflammatory substances in the body (prostaglandins)

Fats allow us to heal quickly and effectively (boosts healing inflammatory pro-

cesses)

A no-fat or low-fat diet can lead to many unwanted affects such as, fatigue,

mood disorders, nutrient deficiencies, and weight issues. Fats are our bod-

ies preferred source of energy!

Saturated fats have been unfairly attacked since the medical and scientific

so-called “experts” falsely linked the dietary intake of saturated fat and cho-

lesterol to the increased incidence of heart disease.

There are many foods that contain healthy fat and vitamins that you may not

suspect. A few of those foods are:

Butter (my favorite)

Grass fed beef (contains omega 3’s)

Pastured eggs

Animal fats from animals that have been pastured

PEAR ALMOND TART

Try making this delicious (and slightly healthier!) dessert for your holiday events

Prep Time: 15 Minutes

Ingredients:

2 firm Bartlett Pears, peeled, cored and sliced into 12 wedges each

1 tbsp lemon juice 1/2 tsp baking powder

1 tbsp dark brown sugar 1/4 tsp salt

1/2 cup raw almonds 1 large egg

1/2 cup granulated sugar 1 tsp grated lemon zest

3/4 cup all-purpose flour 2 1/2 tbsp unsalted butter, chilled

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 375° degrees. Mist a 9 ½ inch tart pan with cooking spray. In a medium bowl, toss the pears

with lemon juice and brown sugar.

2. In a food processor, pulse together the almonds and granulated sugar until mixture is light and fluffy. Add

flour, baking powder and salt. Add the egg and lemon zest, and slice in the butter. Pulse until the mixture

just begins to come together.

3. Turn the dough into the pan and press it over the bottom. Arrange the pears over dough in a circular pattern.

Brush the fruit with a teaspoon of the brown sugar lemon juice mixture remaining in the bowl, reserving any

leftover liquid.

4. Bake 45-50 minutes, until dough is puffy and golden brown. Brush fruit with brown sugar lemon juice mixture

after 40 minutes. Let cool slightly in pan before serving.

BROWN-BUTTER BRUSSELS

SPROUTS Makes: 6 Servings

Prep: 7 Minutes, Cook: 9 Minutes

Ingredients:

1 ½ lbs brussels sprouts, trimmed and halved, lengthwise.

Salt

1 ½ tbs unsalted butter.

1/3 cup chopped pecans

¾ tsp fresh lemon juice

Directions

1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the brussels sprouts

and boil about 5 minutes. Drain well and transfer to a serving bowl.

2014 SAFETY INCENTIVE PROGRAM WINNER!

“My family and I would like to give a huge ‘Thank You’ to Harley Marine Services. I won the grand prize for the

Safety Incentive Program and Harley Marine sent my family on an unforgettable vacation. Harley Marine Services

paid for flight, lodging and three days of fun at Disneyland California adventure. My kids are seven and five and

the timing was perfect, we did EVERYTHING! I convinced my reluctant son that the Tower Of Terror line was for

the bathrooms and got him to do every ride. My daughter rode the big roller coaster eleven times.

I would also like to thank my fellow crew members at Olympic Tug & Barge in Portland. We hold a lot of safety

meetings and we take our drills to the next level, often at inconvenient times. Seattle's Dan Johnson built us a

great man-overboard dummy and he gets dunked often. Everyone participates and has shown great interest.

Captain Sue recently set off the fire alarm unannounced and the crew was on the scene with PPE, comms, and a

charge hose in less than one minute. It takes commitment from everyone and everyone has stepped up.

If you aren't familiar with the Safety Incentive Program, you a missing out on an incredible opportunity. My favorite

part of the program is that you are earning points for doing things that you ALREADY DO!

Safety meetings are required weekly on each vessel, and these are worth points. If you step up and lead the

meeting it is worth even more. Whenever you see an issue with equipment, crews or a particular evolution, it is a

good time for a safety meeting. Take time out and discuss the details so that safety is at the forefront of every-

thing you do. Detail the steps for completing an evolution safely in a JSA, like how to break chain or spool a

winch, and you’ll earn points. This is a tool to get everyone on your vessel, in your port and the entire company

involved when it comes to safety.

gram Grand Prize Winner. Dan is a two-time SIP winner, his first year winning was in 2012.

In recognition of this achievement, HMS sent Dan and his family on a vacation to sunny Southern California to pay a visit

to Disneyland. Dan, along with his wife Leah, and their two children, Bailey and Jake, spent three days taking in the fun

and adventure of the Magic Kingdom. Congratulations, Dan!
