Why Harkány?Harkány is a health resort famous all over Europe, located in the southwestern part of Hungary, 25 km from Pécs, and 15 km from the Pogány Airport. It is situated at the foot of the Villány mountains, protected from the north winds, in a pic-turesque setting.
It is a unique feature of the region that the mild, humid air coming from the Mediterranean Sea and the protective effects of the mountains result in a sub-Mediterranean climatic effect. Mild winters, early springs, hot summers, long autumns, and the number of sunny hours is very high in the region. Due to the Mediterranean air, rare plant communities can be found here, which are otherwise native to the immediate vicinity of the Mediterranean Sea.
However, it isn’t primarily its pleasant climate that makes Harkány such an attractive tourist destination. In the first half of the 19th century, a natural resource was found here by chance, which had been hiding undetected in the depths of the earth since prehistoric times. The utilization of the wa-ter from Harkány for musculoskeletal healing has an almost 200-year-old history, since visiting patients were being cured here with medical supervision as early as the mid-1800s.
The spa, which began to develop in the 1950s, and the rheu-matism hospital founded in 1955 established the professional medical foundations of musculoskeletal rehabilitation. The physicians working in the hospital later discovered the sul-phurous water’s mitigating effect on the symptoms of pso-riasis, as well as its medical effects on chronic gynaecological inflammations. Their findings are supported by the fact that tens of thousands of patients have been healed and become symptom-free in the last 50 years.
About the mineral water of HarkányThe mineral water unique in Europe bursts to the surface from as deep as 50-70 m, with an average temperature of 62.5°C. Its mineral content is about 1000 mg per li-tre. From a medical point of view, its most important component is carbon sulphide, which is under pres-sure, dissolved in wa-ter in a gaseous state. When it surfaces and is released from pres-sure, it begins to de-compose into hydrogen sulphide gas - which gives the char-acteristic scent of the thermal water of Harkány. The carbon sulphide is very actively absorbed into the body both through the skin and by inhalation: its absorption rate is 150 times that of other, more prevalent sulphuric compounds (sulphates).
Clinical studies has been carried out by the Spa and Balneological Hospital in collaboration with the theoretical insti-tutes of the University of Pécs, in accord-ance with the requirements of evidence based medicine, which confirmed the previous empirical data. The competent medical authority accredited the special healing effects of the thermal water of Harkány in compliance with European Union standards.
The Harkány Psoriasis Centre (HPC)The leading healthcare and tourist service providers of Harkány city joined forces in a unique manner in order to create a new medical tourism product by unifying their indi-vidual facilities. As a result, the Harkány Psoriasis Centre was

Zsigmondy Vilmos Spa and Balneological HospitalOur institute is easy to approach from the main road, yet it is located in a quiet environment, next to a wonderful park with ancient trees. The facility, previously operating with 4 wings and 200 rooms, was enhanced with a new hospital wing with the quality of a hotel in 2014. 45 double rooms, with en-suite bathrooms will be placed in the four-storey building, primarily for the domestic and foreign patients treated with psoriasis.
The physicists, nurses and hospital staff involved will partici-pate in a number of trainings to keep their skills up to date, as that they can exploit the potential of the devices used to treat the patients to a maximal extent and they can provide the hu-man support and care necessary for healing. In addition to the separate consulting rooms for dermatology and dermatolo-gy-related fields available to patients, the facility has its own gyms, massage rooms, underwater jet massage tubs, galvanic treatment and electrotherapy rooms. These make it possible to provide a unique package of services among rehabilitation hospitals.
The mineral water of Harkány is well known not only among those suffering from psoriasis, but among musculoskeletal patients and the sufferers of chronic gynaecological inflam-mations as well.

Psoriasis treatmentsIn the Zsigmondy Vilmos Spa and Balneological Hospital of Harkány, the central institution of HPC, the treatment of pa-tients with psoriasis takes place using the elements of natural spa treatments and classic dermatologic therapy. The complex treatments are centred around the spa pools of fresh thermal water gained from the thermal wells through the closed sys-tem.
Psoriasis, based on our present knowledge, cannot be cured
permanently. Due to the nature of the disease, patients re-quire life-long, intermittent dermatology care (in case of complications in the joints, rheumatologic treatment as well) – combined with inpatient care from time to time for some of them. The range of therapeutic solutions is wide: from oint-ments to different types of light therapy treatments to system-atic medicine and, lately, to biological treatments.
The dermatologists of the Spa and Balneological Hospital of Harkány have achieved excellent results in relieving the symp-toms of psoriasis with the thermal water of Harkány, special creams and phototherapy.

Spa treatment is one of the oldest therapeutic solution. The spa cleans the skin, removes the traces of previous ointments. It is suitable for the removal of scales, crusts, or through adding antiseptic agents for the treatment of the su-perinfected skin lesions and the hydration of the stratum cor-neum. The spa removes the irritants and allergens from the skin surface, and after the spa treatment, the concentration of the ointments used in the dermatological treatment and the amount of UV light can be reduced. The spa treatment is wide-ly used in the modern combined psoriasis therapy as well – in Harkány, the salts dissolved in the water and the sulphuric gas contained in and released from the fresh water is absorbed through the skin and the respiratory epithelium, thus support-ing the healing of skin lesions.

The Spa and Open-air Bath of HarkányThe spa boasts with nearly two hundred-year old tradition due to its world fame thermal water, which, in its composition and therapeutic mechanism, has not changed over the centuries.
The thirteen and a half hectare spa area includes both indoor and outdoor pools; one of the latter can even be used in win-ter. Among the refreshing facilities, sauna, refreshing- and sole massage, underwater jet massage and whirlpool bath are also available.
The spa has an independent, high quality, medical department managed by a rheumatology specialist to assist the cure and care of HPC customers by its capacity.
