CHARITY, JUSTICE, BROTHERLY LOVE, AND FIDELITY

My Brother and Sister Elks,

My words this month will be short and sweet.

I hope that all of our members are doing well, and surviving this incredible disruption of our lives. The Lodge is working to get itself ready for reopening when the social contract rules allow it.

We are in the final stages of getting a new walk-in refrigerator for the kitchen.

While the Friday Night “Dinners to-go” are on a break for a few weeks we are hopeful we can re-start them soon. As a bonus, we are seeking a temporary extension on the Lodge license to al-low us to serve drinks in the patio area outside the member’s bar. As I have said before, all immediate information will be by email. If you are not on our current email list please call the Lodge with your email address.

The Elk of the Month is Robert Schrum. Bob has been a steadfast member, besides being the Sec-retary. He has been the person I and many of the Board members have seen take on numerous tasks to keep the Lodge working. Thank you Bob for that.

Fraternally, Michael Huff, ER

A note from Exalted Ruler Michael Huff

There is a growing problem within the order of Elks that needs to be addressed. I can’t stress enough the need for members to use the proper procedures for handling prob-

lems. We just received a letter from our State Sponsor Jim Grillo, PGER regarding this subject that I would like to for you to read.

AN INPORTANT MESSAGE FROM YOUR SPONSORS

“In recent times it has become apparent that an increasing number of our members are initially sending their questions, concerns and complaints directly to our Grand Exulted Ruler and/or Grand Secretary for response or action. It is understand-able to want to get traction at the high-est level possible, but the reality is that in almost every case these communica-tions are just being sent back to the State Sponsor to deal with. With a lot of time being spent doing so. Then, typical-ly, the Sponsor here in Area 7 will then refer the matter to the District Leaders in the local district for investigation and response. That takes more time, and will only result in the concern or com-plaint going to one of the places it should have gone originally, where local and specialized knowledge will be the ben-efit.

There is long tradition in Area 7 that for questions, problems or complaints the mat-ter should first be taken up within the Lodge, either with the officers or senior Lodge Leadership (PERs/PDDGERs). Beyond that the matter can be brought to the Dis-trict Deputy, or if needed the District Leaders within the district. In states with Special Deputy, if need the matter can be taken up with him/her. Only then, and if resources in proper order; going up the chain will produce the best answer in a more timely fashion and not consume val-uable time needlessly on the part of the GER and Grand Secretary.

Thank you for understanding and coopera-tion”.

MAJOR PROJECTS - THANK YOU BY ROBERT SCHRUM

During August three members contributed to Major Projects a total of $487.00. During this Coronavirus pandemic please don’t for-get our children with special needs. Lately donations have been really low. I know this is a hard time for all of us but it is especially hard on the children. Children with disabili-ties really need our help so if you can, please donate to Major Project and help a child run and play. Remember to bring your purple Pig banks to the Lodge Office and receive your tax deduction receipt.

Elks History I bring forth to you from the historical record of the BPOE a point of view of a past member. This is what, to him, membership in our Order meant. I ask, what does it mean to you? Is it this important, worthy, and revered? I hope so…

My Membership Card in the Elks

“I HOLD in my hand a little scrap of paper, two by three inches in size. It is of no intrinsic worth, not a bond, check, or receipt for values, yet it is my most priceless possession. It is my membership card in the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the United States of America.

It tells me that I am an American citizen-the proudest title in all the world that can be conferred upon a man. It tells me that I am the peer of emperors and kings, the ruler of my own destiny, the maker of my own fortune. It tells me that I am a citizen of a land where democracy rules, where brotherhood prevails, where tolerance holds sway, where justice is enthroned.

It tells me that I have joined with 800,000 other Americans in the pledging of allegiance to our country and its laws; in placing the American flag first in our hearts as loyal Americans and first upon our altars as loyal Elks.

IT TELLS me that I have entered into a spiritual and material kinship with my fellow Elks to prac-tice charity in word and deed; to forgive and forget the faults of my brothers, to hush the tongue of scandal and innuendo; to care for the crippled, the hungry and the sick; and to be just to all mankind.

It tells me that in 1,500 cities under good fellowship prevails - a home among brothers and friends; a borne dedicated not only to the high principles for which the Order of Elks stands, but to the need of play, which is inherent in the heart of every man.

It tells me that my loved ones, my home, my fireside, and my household, are under the protec-tion of every member of this great Order, who has sworn to protect and defend mine, as I have sworn to protect his.

IT TELLS me that should I ever be overcome by adversity, the hand of every Elk in all the world will be stretched forth to assist me in my necessities.

It tells me that if old age should find me alone and homeless, that, as an honored guest of our Order, surrounded by my old comrades, and with every comfort and luxury, I may sit upon the veranda at Bedford in Virginia, and watch the evening sun sink behind the Peaks of Otter for the last time before my fading eyes.

And, finally, it tells me, Brothers, that when my final exit from the stage of life has been made, there will be gathered in my Lodge Room friends and brothers, who, when the Eleventh hour has been struck, will recall to mind my virtues, though they be few, and will write my faults, though they be many, upon the sands.” Written by Brother Elk, Robert S. Barrett, Chairman of the Good of the Order Committee of the Grand Lodge of the BPOE in 1932.

Many blessings to you all, Your Lodge Historian, Karin Powers
