Stage Challenge On Friday 7th May, at the Invercargill Civic Theatre, James Hargest College’s senior campus put on a moving performance at the ASB Stage Challenge Southland heats. A cast and crew of 68 students and 5 teachers spent the day in rehearsals, preparing for the 6.30pm show. Laura Skeggs, the student director and lead choreographer spent months preparing the dance moves, costuming, set and lighting for the performance entitled “Positive Choices”. The 8 minute performance followed 3 girls who discover they are pregnant and are faced with the difficult choice of how to tell their boyfriends, their parents and how to raise the baby. The lead performers portrayed the issue with maturity and sensitivity. While not taking out first place this year, JHC won a lot of different awards, most notably the top award for a student led performance. Thanks to the Liaison teacher Miss Debbie Bowman and all the students and parents who put in so much time. The Stage Challenge National finals will be a televised competition using footage recorded during the heats. They will screen on TV3’s Sticky TV later on in the year. The dishes were a main of Tortilla de Patatas (an omelette with potatoes) and a dessert of Churros con Chocolate (similar to donuts with chocolate). For the duration of the period they had to talk in Spanish, including explaining how they were making the dishes. It was a fun learning experience and the food was ¡Fantástica! Then on Tuesday 25 May the Year 12 & 13 Japanese students cooked okonomiyaki, a Japanese style savoury pancake. They also had to speak in the target language and food was delicious! Oishikatta!
