93 Years ago: a stop on the waY to womens sUffrage
Ninet-three ears ago toda, the 19th amendment to the Constitution was passed bCongress and sent to the states for ratification. The 19th amendment would take over aear to be ratified. It would not be until August of 1920 when women finall gained theright to vote. In between June 4, 1919 and August 18, 1920, the League of WomenVoters was founded with the expressed intent to help 20 million women carr out theirnew responsibilities as voters.
We were founded b Carrie Chapman Catt during the convention of the NationalAmerican Women Suffrage Association on Februar 14, 1920. The League began as a"might political experiment. The League encouraged women to use their new power toparticipate in the democratic process b shaping public polic. From the beginning, theLeague has been an activist, grassroots organization whose leaders believed that citizensshould pla a critical role in advocac. League founders believed that maintaining a non-partisan stance would protect the fledgling organization from becoming mired in the partpolitics of the da. However, League members were encouraged to be political them-
selves, b educating citizens about, and lobbing for, government and social reform legislation.
Toda, we reflect back on our histor and pa respect to the women who paved the wa for womens suffrage and thefounding of our organization.
