Natural Climate ControlOur Hardwood Shutters help to regulate your home’s temperature, minimize energy loss, and protect against sun damage. By adjusting the amount of sunlight entering your window, shutters keep your home warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. A secure, custom fit ensures that our shutters, when closed, can provide insulation that prevents heated or cooled air from escaping—leading to reduced energy consumption and lower heating and cooling costs. And our shutters also protect your rugs and furniture by blocking 99% of harmful UV rays when the louvers are completely closed.

TOP RAILA horizontal section that is located above the louvers and positioned between the vertical stiles.
MOUSE HOLEA small area routed out of the rail of a wood shutter. It provides a space for the tilt rod to sit flush against the rail, allowing the louvers to fully close. (Shutter panels with our hidden tilt option will not have a mouse hole.)
HINGEHinges connect shutter panels to the shutter frame. They may also connect panels to each other, providing for a multitude of configuration options.
TILT RODVertical rod that controls rotation of louvers in a coordinated manner for control of light, privacy, and ventilation.
LOUVERSIndividual pieces of wood that are milled and rounded along the top and bottom edges, and are connected to a tilt rod, allowing them to rotate between the vertical stiles. Louvers are available in several widths.
STILEVertical pieces that comprise the left and right sides of each panel and connect to the top and bottom rails (forming the panel frame) and the louvers.
BOTTOM RAILHorizontal section of wood that is located below the louvers and positioned between the vertical stiles.
PANELRectangular section that is attached to frame with hinges. A panel is composed of stiles, rails, and louvers.
DIVIDER RAIL (OPTIONAL)An additional rail that is located within the louver field, dividing a single set of louvers into two separately functioning sets within a single panel. In addition to aesthetics and functionality, divider rails may also be necessary on larger size panels.
FRAMEWood encasement that holds shutter panels and is attached to the window’s millwork.
The minimum height of a shutter is 12″; maximum height
is 110″.

“We bought a house that came with shutters in the dining
room. We loved the look of the shutters and wanted to
outfit our entire first floor. Our neighbor recommended
we contact Next Day Blinds. Within a few weeks, our new
shutters were installed—they matched our trim exactly,
fit perfectly, and looked amazing! We were so impressed,
we ended up having NDB replace the original shutters
our house came with. We are very pleased with our entire
experience and, of course, our beautiful shutters.” MARY L.

We won’t settle for subpar wood.
Our WoodAt Next Day Blinds we use Basswood, exclusively, in the production of our wood shutters. Basswood is lighter in weight, clearer in appearance, and receives paint and stain better than other hardwoods. Sourced from the Linden Tree, Basswood is highly sustainable, and a favorite material for artisan-level woodworking and the building of musical instruments.
The light weight of Basswood is critical to our premium design objectives. Lighter weight makes for easier day-to-day use, less wear and tear on moving parts, less stress and torquing on hinges, and less stress on existing jambs and millwork.

Our FinishesIt’s not just about the material—it’s also about the finish.
A high-quality wood is only enhanced by a premium finish and application. At Next Day Blinds, we use furniture-grade finishes to deliver the most optimal results.
PAINTED SHUTTERS
We custom paint your shutters to perfectly match your existing millwork— or any other color you choose—at no extra charge. Matching your millwork color is key to achieving an overall integrated look, which produces a superior outcome. If you don’t know your millwork color, we have a standard palette of paint colors to choose from.
Post-Assembly Paint ApplicationWe paint our shutter panels after they’ve been assembled; finishing in this manner allows us to deliver consistent quality and beautiful results. This method of finishing allows for paint to cover and fill all seams that are created by the connecting and joining of the wood components. This technique results in a more seamless appearance when compared to shutters assembled from pre-finished components.
STAINED SHUTTERS
We stain all of our shutter components in-house, which lets us control the richness of the stain and the sheen, and guarantees a consistent look across the finished product. For a more customized result, we can match the stain of your existing millwork for an additional charge.
Pre-Assembly Stain ApplicationWith a stained finish, we’ve found that we get the most consistent, beautiful results when we stain our shutter components prior to assembling them. The process is labor-intensive, with our skilled craftspeople completing multiple rounds of sanding, staining, and quality inspection before assembling the finished pieces into a shutter panel.

Details MatterBecause we manufacture what we sell and measure, we are able to take feedback from our technicians, woodworkers, and customers and translate it into innovative solutions. Our ability to continuously improve our products results in small enhancements that make a big impact, such as accommodating specialty window hardware or utilizing magnetic faux hinges when necessitated by tight spaces.
• 24
••
24 •
RABBETED STILESA gap between side-by-side shutter panels is simply unacceptable. That’s why we use rabbeted stiles. This woodworking technique means that the edges of the panels are cut with interlocking grooves, allowing the panels to sit tightly when closed and minimizing light gaps between panels.
MORTISED HINGESMortising the hinge into the shutter stile is a more advanced woodworking technique that results in a more finished look and overall enhanced integrity of the shutter. Shutter panels with mortised hinges will generally have smaller light gaps and tighter tolerances than shutter panels with surface-mounted hinges.
ROUTED MOUSE HOLES Our shutters are built with only a top mouse hole because we believe this detail makes the shutter more functional, higher quality, and more attractive. When the louvers are tilted completely up, the tilt rod lies flush in the mouse hole, offering tight closure and light blockage. In contrast, when tilted down, the louvers are consistently aligned with a small space between each one. The result? You can let in light and maintain privacy, while keeping the louvers aligned across multiple panels in a slightly open position. This feature is especially helpful when there are multiple shutter panels in a room and you desire a cohesive, aesthically pleasing look.

Custom Tailoring
Seamless integration. Superior results. When we build and install your Hardwood Shutters, our ultimate objective is for them to appear seamlessly integrated with your existing millwork or trim. We incorporate additional window measurements, such as sill projection, window depth, and millwork type, resulting in an enhanced degree of customization that we refer to as custom tailoring. We think of a shutter unit like a piece of furniture for your windows; it should appear as an integral part of the window’s millwork. In order to custom tailor a shutter, the process requires measuring, design, manufacturing, and installation, which we handle from start to finish within our fully integrated, end-to-end business model. This is what sets us apart and allows us to provide superior results, a more customer-focused experience, and Hardwood Shutters that enhance your home’s beauty for years to come.

MEASURINGAt your convenience, one of our measuring technicians—never a subcontractor—will come to your home to professionally measure every detail of your windows. You can rest assured knowing that each unique feature of window trim—from width and height to millwork, sill projection, window depth, and even color—will be taken into consideration to ensure a perfect, custom-tailored shutter.
MOUNTINGOUTSIDE MOUNTThe standard application for shutters is on the millwork. By default, the shutter frame is placed on the innermost part of the millwork surface, exposing as much of the millwork as possible.
INSIDE MOUNTIn some instances, inside mounting into a recess is an option. For proper mounting of the shutter unit, there must be enough depth within the recess for the louvers to clear the window frames. (Inside mounting will often interfere with the tilt-in function for sash windows.)

Frames
Our measuring and application professionals will evaluate your window to determine what type of frame is needed. Our goal is to create a frame that will match the projection of your windowsill—this will create a more integrated appearance with your millwork. Because of the large variety of window styles, sill projections, and millwork, each window is unique, and we will make adjustments as necessary.
Three-sided frames are ideal, but your windows will largely dictate whether we add a fourth side. The fourth frame side is added at the discretion of the measuring technician in applications where the windowsill projection is too shallow to accommodate the shutter panels; when the windowsill is not level or in some manner uneven; or when the bottom of the shutter panel will be in the direct line of sight. If these conditions are present on any one window, we will typically manufacture all shutters in that room with four sides for uniformity and consistency.
4-SIDED FRAME
A bottom frame, or four-sided frame, is indicated when:• Window is positioned higher than normal
on the wall
• Windowsill is not level
• No windowsill or a shallow windowsill
3-SIDED FRAME
A three-sided frame is indicated when:• Windowsill is level
• Windowsill is sufficient depth
The number of sides needed for a frame is at the discretion of measuring technician. Cafe shutters may have a two-sided frame.

Divider Rails
A divider rail is an optional feature that divides the louvers within a panel into two sections, which provides versatility with the ability to operate each louvered section independently. Many homeowners find the ability to close the lower portion for privacy and open the top section for viewing and light useful.
Divider rails provide the following benefits: • Independent rotation of upper and lower
louvers, allowing the adjustment of privacy and light control
• An alternative design aesthetic
• Covering the window divider and the sash lock of a double-hung window
• Increased stability for tall panels (required when panels exceed 82˝ in height with a standard tilt rod and 70˝ in height with a hidden tilt rod)
• 1 ⅞˝ shutters require divider rail when over 60˝
• 32
••
32 •
VARIABLE LOCATION/FIXED RAIL SIZE(Recommended)
BENEFITS
The top and bottom rails are always the same height and uniform among all shutter panels, regardless of panel height.
CONSIDERATIONS
The precise placement of the divider rail may not be located exactly as measured, because one or two louvers are removed. Placement of the divider rail may vary up or down to ensure the top and bottom rails are the same height. The placement of the divider rail may vary ¾″ on panels with 1 ⅞″ louvers; 1″ on panels with 2 ½″ louvers; 1 ½″ on panels with 3 ½″ louvers; and 2″ on panels with 4 ½″ louvers.
FIXED LOCATION/VARIABLE RAIL SIZE
BENEFITS
The placement of the divider rail will be precise to the exact desired location, as measured.
CONSIDERATIONS
The top and bottom rail heights may vary within a panel, which means one rail may be shorter than the other.
A room with multiple windows of various heights may have inconsistent top and bottom rail heights among shutter panels.
Creating space for a divider rail requires the removal of one or two louvers, which then also requires adjustments to either the location of the divider rail (variable location) or the size of the top and/or bottom rails (fixed location). When deciding which divider rail placement option is right for you, consider the following:

ConfigurationsThis section showcases the shutter configurations that are available for various window types. The configuration will affect the overall look, functionality, and integrity of the installed shutter unit. While configurations are generally a matter of personal preference, our experts are here to help you choose the best option for your home.

| 47 •
Things to Consider
The key factor to consider when choosing your configuration is how you intend to use your shutters. For example, do you plan to keep the panels closed and only open the louvers? Or would you prefer to open the panels completely so that they clear the window? Certain configurations optimize the integrity of the shutter, while others optimize functionality, so the first step in choosing the right configuration is to determine how you want your shutters to perform.
T-POSTST-Posts are vertical frame posts used between panels and within the outer frame. T-Posts can be added as an aesthetic choice to cover a mullion or added to wide configurations to add integrity. Locations of T-Posts are indicated throughout this section with teal shading.
OPTIMIZE FUNCTIONALITYHinging panels to panels allows for panels to be bi-folded to clear the window opening, folding back against the wall in most applications. Choose the bi-fold style if your intended use is to frequently open panels. RIGHT RIGHT LEFT LEFT RIGHT RIGHT
Example Styles
OPTIMIZE INTEGRITYHinging panels to frame sides only will optimize integrity. In some instances, this style may require a T-Post. Choose this style if your intended use is to rarely open panels.

DOORSHardwood Shutters are an ideal window covering for hinged doors. Securely mounted on all four sides to the door surface, they become a fixed part of the door and will open and close with it as an integrated unit. Typically, a door shutter is a single-panel shutter contained within a frame that is hinged on the same side as the door hinge. We custom tailor each shutter specifically for the door onto which it is being applied, paying special attention to the door type and glass trim and accommodating levered locksets and handles with custom cut-outs.
STANDARD
A standard door knob with adequate clearance from the shutter frame. There is no cut-out in the shutter assembly.
STANDARD, NO CLEARANCE
A standard door knob without adequate clearance from the shutter frame. There is a small cut-out in the shutter assembly.
LEVERED HANDLED
A levered handle. There is a cut-out in the shutter assembly that is large enough to accommodate the handle.
Shutter hinges will always be on the same side as the door hinges.
