With any home improvement job one should expect a certain degree of disruption and inconvenience to everyday life. We employ the experience of our workers alongside the latest equipment and environmentally friendly materials to complete the work with a little disruption as possible. Below are some tips on what to expect and to help prepare you for your upcoming flooring work.

How to PrepareRemove all furniture, drapes or blinds, pictures from walls, and items from closets where work is going to be done.Be prepared for dust. All of our machines produce dust, the workers do their best to control it and clean up, but expect some clean up afterwards. The best

way to minimize dust travel from room to room is to plastic doorways and vents with plastic sheeting.

Our machines require adequate power to run. The sanding machines require 220 volts to run, these plugs are often found behind electric stoves and dryers.

Sand and RefinishingPlease be advised that there will be noise, dust and some vapours during the Sanding and Refinishing Process.Please keep all children and pets away from the work area.

When work is completed you may need to re-paint baseboards as well as quart-round/ shoe mouldings.

PREPARATIONS

WHAT TO EXPECT

Although a finish may look dry, it is still curing. You may return furniture to the room one day after the work has been completed. However, do not replace any area rugs for 6-8 weeks as the finish is still curing for that time period.

InstallationWith installation usually comes some pre-install demolition, be prepared for any dust and odors that may occur while your existing flooring is removed.

In the summer months products will be cut outside your home, however in the colder months we require a space to cut flooring, because of this there can be more dust created, be prepared for some minor clean up after our workers have done their initial clean up.

Unlike Site finished Flooring or Sanding and refinishing your floors, prefinished flooring can be walked on immediately after installation is complete.

If you are having Baseboards and/or Shoe Moulding in-stalled; the products come primed and ready to paint, be prepared to fill and paint after installation.

Hardwood FlooringWe offer a variety of exotic, unique and standard wood options. These selections are available in various widths and thicknesses that will compliments you home decor designs.

Engineered FlooringSolid SawnSolid sawn is a product distributed by Vintage flooring, it is an Engineered floor, however all parts of the floor are made from hardwood. It consists of three layers of wood.The top layer is 3-5mm in thickness, and can be sanded 2-5 times. The center layer is 9mm thick and is put perpendicular to add strength to the product, it uses the same species of wood, or one alike to it. The third

(bottom) layer is 4.5mm thick, and uses the same or alike species of wood.Solid Sawn is available is a variety of sizes and types of wood as well.

Solid Sawn Advantages Solid Sawn hardwood has a very large relative humidity allowance of 30%-80%. Also it does not need to be climatized like regular hardwoods; it can be installed the same day it arrives in your home.

Engineered Flooring AdvantagesEngineered materials are made to solve problems, and engineered hardwood flooring is no exception. Dimensional stability, needing to install over any type of subfloor, and height/transition issues are just some of the common problems engineered flooring helps solve. Engineered flooring has a relative humidity range of 40% to 60% (compared to solid hardwood at 45% to 55%)

SOLVING PROBLEMS

Problem SolvingHardwood is a natural product and must be maintained properly to ensure minimal problems, here are some of the most common issues we come across:

ProblemGapping, shrinking, cracking or cupping.

Most-likely causeThe humidity in your home is either too high or too low.

SolutionMaintain humidity in your home as follows: 45%-55% for solid hardwood, 40% to 60% for engineered floors, and 30% to 80% for Solid Sawn flooring. This can be done

with humidifiers or dehumidifiers. We recommend pur-chasing a hygrometer to help track your homes humidity.

ProblemFinish peeling, and/or looking dull.

Most-likely causeUsing harmful products to clean your hardwood flooring, and/or excessive water-use.

SolutionUse products with low chemical contents on your hardwood flooring (We recommend Polycare flooring cleaning products, please see our Care page) Also, do not soak your floors. When cleaning make sure your mop is damp, not soaking wet.
