Hardware / Software Installation
Purpose: To ensure that instruments and systems are correctly installed and functioning as designed, in the
customer's facility. Correct installation is the first step in ensuring that instruments and systems operate reliably
over an extended lifetime.
Note: The 7820MSD Diffusion pump will refer to the G3175A which is used in G7020A.
The 7820MSD Standard Turbo pump will refer to the G3176A which is used in G7021A.
Customer Responsibilities The customer should ensure that the installation site is prepared in accordance with the specifications contained in
the relevant site preparation document and that the necessary operating supplies, consumables and usage dependent
items such as gases, vials, paper, solvents, etc. are available. A customer representative should be present at all
times during the installation.
Note: During software installation the Support Provider will create an administrator account on the system for
future use; without this capability, updating and editing of the MSD configuration files will not be possible.

Installation Checklist
Unpacking and inspection of shipped materials Note: Shipping containers should not be opened until an Agilent Technologies representative is present
Unpack all boxes and place equipment on bench. To prevent injury, get lifting assistance for the GC.
Retain shipping containers and material until installation is complete and performance is verified.
Notify order fulfillment of any discrepancies
MSD ChemStation Installation
Upgrade ChemStation versus new ChemStation
The MSD Productivity Software will by default save/install the software on new systems to the x:\MSDChem
directory.
Data System installation and preparation
(Data System needs to be configured to run Remote7820 GC panel.)
Install PC with Network card
Unpack LAN SWITCH and position on bench, connect the power line to the SWITCH
Connect LAN cable from the GC to LAN SWITCH Port #1
Connect LAN cable from 5975 to LAN SWITCH Port #2

Connect LAN cable from PC (T-10) to LAN SWITCH Port #3
Install printer and connect parallel cable
Turn on LAN SWITCH, Modem, printer, monitor, and PC (in this order)
Configure PC network for TCP/IP, IP address, Subnet Mask, as specified in the ChemStation Installation
Manual.
Recording Software Registration Number
The software registration number is automatically saved in the revision history file. This text file can be
viewed by selecting View Revision History found in the Help menu of Data Analysis.
Install Agilent BOOTP Service software (if applicable)
o Turn off the MSD and GC
o Turn on the MSD
o Configure the MS IP address (configure BOOTP and verify communication)
o Turn on GC
o Configure GC IP address (configure BOOTP and verify communication)
Install SICL I/O Libraries
Configure the SICL I/O Libraries for LAN Client
Install MSD ChemStation Productivity Software
Configure the MSD and GC using MS Config icon
Install MSD Service Pack (if applicable)
Install Lab Monitoring and Diagnostics (LMD) software
o Manuals for the system
o 7820A firmware updates
o 7820A Remote Control Software
Turn on both MSD and GC
Using Help from the Config Icon, execute check networking and update MSD firmware.
Productivity Software Update
Start MSD ChemStation software by clicking instrument icon
Load DEFAULT.M, verify method resolution and save to:
…1\methods\default.m
ReLoad DEFAULT.M, a prompt for “MSD Method Upgrade –Detector Voltage Setting” will appear. Accept
the default setting and save method.
Set factory tune and temperature parameters in Edit MS Params panel to ATUNE.U (Tune and Vacuum
Control)
Verify profile scan is successful
Save tune parameters
Perform an ATUNE.U on the system. (This will perform the traditional ATUNE as well as update the GAIN
profile for the tune.)
Update and save other evaluation methods (if applicable)

Validate the methods are still GAIN based methods, by reloading them after saving

GC installation and preparation – if applicable.
Remove left side panel of GC
Remove upper front knockout in the GC exterior oven wall for MSD interface
Remove the two knockouts from the left side panel.
Disconnect the rear inlet heater/sensor cable for the MSD interface
o If rear inlet has an inlet then connect GC auxiliary heating cable
Reinstall left side panel, route GC/MSD interface cable through the lower hole
Connect carrier gas, trap, and GC with copper tubing
Purge gas lines with helium at 5 - 8 psi (35 - 55 KPa)
Install ALS (optional)
Verify line voltage and outlet
Plug in power cable and turn on GC
Verify that the GC passes self test
Configure Column parameters using software keyboard
Set carrier gas line pressure to approximately 50 psi (448 KPa)
Set carrier gas flow rate to 3 ml per minute
Remove septum plugging end of column and cut end of column
Verify helium flow through column
Set Injection port temperature to 300C
Set oven temperature to ramp from 40C to 280C at 15C per minute, and hold for 10 minutes.
Inject a solvent sample into GC; repeat two more times, 5 minutes apart
Set GC temperature to 40C after temperature cycle complete
MSD installation and preparation
Unpack MSD
Unpack Foreline pump and add oil to pump
Unpack Foreline pump safety cage (optional)
Place MSD and foreline pump on the bench
Open the top cover of MSD
Fill the PFTBA calibrant vial with calibrant (if applicable)
Remove plugs from the foreline pump
Verify foreline pump line voltage with AC power
Install line voltage identification sticker on MSD (if applicable)
For DUO 2.5 Foreline Pump
o Place oil drip pan under the foreline pump.
o Install foreline pump safety shield (optional)
Remove the Diffusion Pump Cap from the MSD
Connect foreline pump to MSD
Vent pump exhaust to a fume hood and/or install the oil trap filter.
Connect foreline pump and AC supply power cords to the MSD.
Install the G3397A Micro Gauge Controller (optional)
Turn off GC
Connect GC/MSD interface heater cable to GC

Position carefully the MSD close to the GC.
Connect remote start/stop cables from the GC to the MSD
Connect MSD power cord to the appropriate AC outlet
Loosen the sideplate thumbscrews completely, and open analyzer
Install column in the GC/MSD interface – use view port to install column.
Turn on GC
Turn off Thermal AUX#2 line in GC
Set GC carrier gas flow to 1.0 ml per minute with constant flow enabled
Install the EM (Do not leave the EM exposed to air for prolong periods of time.)
Turn power on to MSD
Verify foreline pump and the front fan operation
Verify foreline pump pumpdown operation
Verify high vacuum pump
o turbo pump stops whining within 4 minutes
o diffusion pump starts to heat up within 2-3 minutes
Input the IP address for the GC via the front keypad
Input the IP address for the MSD via the front keypad (LCP – Local Control Panel)
Monitor the pump down status
EI System Verification Under Qualify Menu perform the following:
Checkout Tune
Tune Evaluation
Sensitivity Check
Disk Image If a ChemStation PC/Software bundle has been purchased then create a disc image of the ChemStation hard drive.
Install Disk Image Software
Not Included in Installation
Training on LAN
Connecting the instrument up to the customers building LAN (available upon time/material)
Service Review Record MSD serial on signal to noise (S/N) report
Fax S/N report(s) and Tune Report(s) to CAS Technical Marketing at (USA) 408-553-6500 or your regions
local Technical Marketing Support Provider.
Register the customer for complimentary software support (if applicable).
Affix any reports generated to this Checklist
Record in the instrument logbook date and time install was completed
Explain Agilent warranty for Hardware, Software and return policy for the Instrument Service Center
Explain how to log an instrument service call
