CHAPTER 6 – SOURCES OF ENERGY

6.1 The Various Forms and Sources of Energy

6.2 Renewable and Non- Renewable Energy Resources

6.3 The Importance of Conserving Energy Sources

WHAT IS ENERGY

Energy is the ability to do work. It is measured in joules (J).

Energy stored in a body due to its

condition

POTENTIAL ENERGY Energy stored in a body due to its

condition or position

Energy stored in a body due to its

position

KINETIC ENERGY Energy possessed by an object due to

its motion. It depends on the mass and speed.

HEAT ENERGY When something gains heat energy, temperature rises and changes of state happen. Main source

of heat is the Sun. Heat energy flows from hotter region to colder

region. What are the uses of heat energy?

LIGHT ENERGY The energy gained from objects that emit light. Main source is the Sun. Light energy enters our eyes and

allows us to see.

SOUND ENERGY Is produced by vibrating objects.

Sound energy travel in waves. Sound can travel through matter but cannot

travel through vacuum.

CHEMICAL ENERGY Is the energy stored in foods, fuels and other chemical substances. Hence, it is a type of potential energy too. The stored energy is released when materials undergo chemical

reactions.

The stored energy is then

released as other forms of

energy.

ELECTRICAL ENERGY Is the energy produced by flowing electric

charges / current. It is supplied in the form of electricity which is then converted into other

forms of energy.

ELECTRICAL ENERGY Lightning too can produce electrical energy but

it can kill if passes through human’s body. Besides, electrical energy is very important for

electrical appliances to function too.

NUCLEAR ENERGY Is the energy stored in the nucleus of an atom. It

is known as atomic energy too. It can be released in nuclear reactions :-
