As we approach Purim and then Passover, Jewish tradition reminds us of our commitment to tzedakah, an important component of the observance of those sacred occasions.

In Jewish practice, tzedakah — donating some of one’s means to the communal well-being — is not the equivalent of giving “charity.” The word “charity” derives from the Latin word “caritas,” which means “love.” The idea there is that you should give when your heart leads you to do so. “Tzedakah,” however, is based on the Hebrew word for “righteousness,” as in the biblical command from God: “Tzedek Tzedek Tirdof” — “You must pursue righteousness in your deeds.”

For Jews, then, giving tzedakah is not something to be done only when the heart moves us in this direction; it is, rather, a necessary and righteous act that God commands us to do. This distinction is evident, for example, within Maimonides’ essential “Eight Degrees of Tzedakah.” The Rambam includes among those credited with meaningfully fulfilling the mitzvah of tzedakah both “those who give graciously” and “those who give grudgingly, reluctantly, or with regret.” For Judaism, people lead a life of “righteousness” not because of how they give, but because they give.

Moreover, in the view of our sages, the very act of giving tzedakah is life-affirming. As an illustration, they point to the difference between two dramatically different bodies of water in the Land of Israel. The Kinneret (Sea of Galilee) symbolizes vigor and vitality; Yam Hamelach (the Dead Sea) is the embodiment of the absence of life. Why? The rabbis taught: “The Sea of Galilee not only receives water from the Jordan River but also gives of its waters to other streams. On the other hand, the Dead Sea keeps all that it receives

Judaism’s Commitment to Tzedakah

— thus its name. To paraphrase Scripture (Proverbs 10:2), “Helping others keeps you alive.”

Jewish tradition views with great favor those who not only contribute tzedakah, but who also solicit others to do the same. “A person who persuades others to give tzedakah shall have a reward [in fulfilling yet a second mitzvah] that accompanies the mitzvah fulfilled by the act of the donor….” Our religious tradition likened those who bring others to participate in acts of tzedakah as role models for us all, pointing to the Book of Daniel 12:3: “They who turn others to acts of tzedakah [shall shine] as the stars.”

Giving tzedakah to fulfill worthy communal needs and meet pressing challenges has been an essential Jewish value passed from one generation to the next through the ages. Judaism mandates that it is incumbent upon parents to instill devotion to this mitzvah in their children. A prominent Boston businessman, for example, wrote the following in the ethical will he wrote for his son: “Acquiring money is only a noble goal but it is not an end in itself.” He then elaborated upon the importance both of meeting the material needs of one’s family and of engaging in meaningful acts of tzedakah. He concluded: “I say this to you because I know that your abilities may well make you wealthy materially. But my real desire is that you be successful in business and that you become rich in heart and in soul.”

As the CAI family moves toward the observance of our annual springtime holy days, may each one of us be privileged — in accordance with his or her means — to fulfill the life-affirming, paramount mitzvah of tzedakah. In the process, may we become ever richer in heart and soul.

How do you express your connection to Israel? Perhaps you support our Greater

MetroWest federation, which does a variety of worthy projects in Israel. Maybe you are philanthropic in other ways — supporting any number of

worthy organizations that promote culture, public health, education, and civil

society in Israel. Perhaps you stay informed by reading the latest news out of Israel or reading Israeli books in Hebrew or translation. Maybe you’ve used recipes from one of the Ottolenghi or Solomonov cookbooks (or tell me what your favorite Israeli cookbook is).

One other important way to stay connected to Israel is by voting for Mercaz in the 2020 World Zionist elections. There’s still time, but not much. Voting closes March 11, 2020. This is a critical way to support the efforts of the Conservative/Masorti movement in Israel, America, and around the world, and it’s the best way to have your voice heard in the most exciting collaborative project of the Jewish people for the past 2,000 years — a Jewish homeland in Israel. To vote, go to Mercaz2020.org and sign up. Anyone who is 18 years of age or older, self-identifies as Jewish, and pays the $7.50 administrative fee is eligible to vote. So, I encourage you to do so and tell your friends and family to do so as well.

The famous poet Judah Halevi wrote, “My heart is in the East, and I am at the edge of the West.” I feel at times that I have two hearts — one here and one in Israel. Or maybe it’s one heart split in two. Whatever the case may be, when we engage with Israel in any number of ways, we can bring a greater sense of wholeness to our Jewish lives and feel connected to the vital center of the Jewish people all over the world.

“We’re not going home; we’re going back.” I remember my abba saying those words to me as we prepared to return to the States at the end of my first trip to Israel. I wondered how the contradiction could be true — our house, my school, my parents’ work were all in the U.S. And yet, my father was expressing a deep-seated belief that we are connected to our people’s homeland in Israel. That paradox has been a part of my consciousness as a Jew as my relationship with Israel has grown through the years. Somehow, even though I choose to live most of my life in the United States, Israel still feels like home.

Our community expresses its commitment to Israel in many ways. We pray for Israel in our tefillot (prayers); we engage with Israel through learning and discussion; we celebrate Israel on Yom Ha’atzmaut and in our annual walk for Israel; we advocate for Israel’s well-being through political activism. But there’s nothing quite like being there — tasting foods, walking paths, connecting to God in holy spaces, meeting people. Which is why I am so excited to join Susan Werk in co-leading a CAI trip to Israel this summer (there are still a few spots available — contact me if you’re interested).

But there are other ways to connect to Israel as well. As you receive this, I will be joining over 40 members of our community who are attending the AIPAC policy conference in Washington, DC. We will learn about contemporary issues in Israel and engage in grassroots activism — lobbying our members of Congress to support the vital U.S.-Israel relationship. I look forward to sharing more details when I return.

Stories from Germany, Part 2

Last month, I told you some stories from my recent trip to Berlin to sing Jewish choir music with the Zamir Chorale of Boston. Here are some more:

1) Greetings from Mom: Ready for some unlikely Jewish geography? I told you last month about singing a 1934 “resistance music” cantata — for soloists, chorus, and orchestra — by a German-Jewish cantor, Hugo Chaim Adler. His son, Dr. Samuel Adler, was one of the organizers of our performance. And Sam Adler’s wife, the also-renowned conductor Dr. Emily Freeman Brown, was our conductor.

It turns out that her mother lives in Iowa City, Iowa, in the same senior residence as my own mother. In brief, my mom knows her mom. So before the performance, I came up to her and Sam and said, “Greetings from your mom, from Iowa City.” “My mom?!” she exclaimed.

2) Jonathan Leshnoff: More Jewish geography. One of the pieces that we performed was by Jonathan Leshnoff, who grew up here in Caldwell, where he and his family lived on Park Avenue. His parents are Susan and Steve Leshnoff, and his grandparents were Ida and Rabbi Alter Kriegel, of Congregation Beth Ahm in Verona.

As a boy, Jonathan studied at CAI’s Religious School and was a very talented bar mitzvah student of mine. He has now been a longtime music professor at Towson University and a highly regarded and highly performed composer.

Joshua Jacobson, director of the Zamir Chorale of Boston, commissioned him to write a new work for the group’s 50th anniversary, and Jonathan wrote a beautiful piece entitled “Hegyon Libi” — “Meditation of My Heart.” It was a great honor to sing that in Berlin.

3) Two Germanys: This one isn’t about Jews or music, but I found it fascinating. At one exhibit, I read, “The Berlin Wall has been down for decades, but there are still two Germanys, East and West.” Puzzled, I asked our guide about this, and he said, “There are cultural and even linguistic differences. The stereotype, of course, is that West Germans

think Easterners are lazy (that is, they were used to relying on the communist regime to ‘take care of them’), and East Germans think Westerners are stressed-out, money-grubbing, hustling capitalists.

“But there is also longstanding distrust. For instance, before reunification, there was an East German company that was world famous for manufacturing construction cranes. The quality was superb, and the plant employed a thousand people. When the Berlin Wall came down, the new government rushed to privatize over 8,000 East German companies, which had been owned by the communist regime.

“The Privatization Office had a rule that if you bought one of these companies, you had to keep the current workers employed for at least a year. Sounds good, right? Well, in this case, the crane company was bought by a foreign crane company. They kept the workers for a year, and then shut

This year’s big concert will be Sunday afternoon, March 22, at 4 pm at David Geffen Hall, formerly known as Avery Fisher Hall.

Before that, on Wednesday evening, March 18, we will host two sister HaZamir choirs from Israel: One group from our Greater MetroWest federation twin community of Ofakim-Merchavim, and another group from Ashkelon. We will sing informally together in our chapel that evening. Come and hear us — for free! Come to evening minyan at 7:45 pm, and then you’ll hear the teenagers. It’s heartwarming!

“The head of the Privatization Office no doubt thought that he was doing the right thing for his fellow citizens, but a lot of resentment was caused by the privatization of all those companies. He was assassinated in his home by what we would now call domestic terrorists.

“Two Germanys? One Germany? It hasn’t been so many years…. Your American Civil War ended over 150 years ago. Do you have a unified country now?”

4) Puzzle Time: There are several synagogues in Berlin, and one of them was only a few blocks from our hotel. That made it easy for me to go say Kaddish for my father, and I used one of their siddurim. The photo on the right is from that siddur.

Your “puzzle” is to look at the photo carefully and answer these questions. Or see if a child/friend/relative can answer them:

a) Which prayer is this?

b) Which words mean, “Hear, O Israel”?

c) Which word means “God”?

d) Which words mean “Heart,” “Soul,” and “Might”? (Okay, I’ll tell you that “kraft” means might. Like the cheese products, or the owner of the New England Patriots)

e) Which word means “children”? (Hint: “Kindergarten” means “garden for children.”)

f) Which words mean “sit in your house”?

g) Which word means “hand”?

h) On the bottom left, what does “5. Buch Moses” mean? (Hint: What part of the Torah does this paragraph come from? What would we call that part?)

Education Matters

SUSAN WERK, EDUCATION DIRECTOR

Everything Is Important

When I first began my career in Jewish education, a wise person advised me to keep at hand a pad of paper listing the things I needed to get done. She said that it would make me feel good as I crossed off each task I accomplished. This system evolved into a list of goals — daily, monthly, and then yearly.

Good advice — but my list is always so long! How do I prioritize? After all, everything is important. Now spring is approaching and added to my already long to-do list is spring cleaning, getting ready for Purim, and then preparation for Pesach. The overwhelming “I have so much to do” burden sometimes leaves me with the feeling that I actually accomplish very little. Well, of course I can look to our tradition to acquire strength.

In our early childhood department we have adopted the practice — from musician and spiritual leader Eliana Light — of rubbing hands, sitting up tall, taking a deep breath, and saying “shalom” before reciting the “Sh’ma.” This short mindfulness practice settles our ECC children — and even the adults — and allows them to focus. When we think about preparing for the act of prayer and the act itself, it actually is a way to focus, to prioritize our “to-do” lists. It reduces the overwhelming feeling of “there is so much that needs to be

done” and allows us to reflect on what is really important — for example: relationships, gratitude, acknowledging the wonder of the world around us.

I know that some items on the “to-do” list are time-bound; reflection and refocusing are great but do not get the chicken soup cooked. That is when I am reminded of another amazing teaching from “Ethics of the Fathers,” chapter 2:16. Rabbi Tarfon taught:

“It is not your responsibility to finish the work, but neither are you free to desist from it.” When he speaks of work, Rabbi Tarfon is actually referring to what we must do to repair the world and move it closer to perfection. I take this interpretation and apply it to more practical and realistic goals, but I also remember that creating a better world — especially my immediate world, which includes all of you — remains the top priority. So as I clean for spring and prepare for the holidays, instead of dreading my long list, I feel empowered and excited for celebration and time with friends, family, and community!

I wish all of you a meaningful start of spring — check that off my list!

Highlighting a Mitzvah Project for SederMy name is Gabby Berk, and for my bat mitzvah project I am a volunteer for a new program that pushes back on anti-Semitism called 2 for Seder. This program was created after the Pittsburgh Tree of Life Synagogue shooting. My aunt’s sister, Marnie Fienberg’s mother-in-law, Joyce Fienberg, was murdered on Shabbat morning of October 27, 2018. I feel that this was a hateful action. These fellow Jewish people were just trying to go to synagogue and to pray. They just were trying to live a Jewish life.

The 2 for Seder program introduces those of a different faith to a Passover seder and gives them a new experience — what it is like to be Jewish for a day. You invite 2 or more non-Jewish people to your seder. 2 for Seder is a free activity to impact others, introduce them to Judaism, and give them a positive experience in order to fight back against anti-Semitism with Love and Matzah. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to

share your songs, traditional Passover foods, and storytelling? 2 for Seder will also help you organize your seder by sending you a kit of activities and talking points.

Unfortunately, my family has been exposed to anti-Semitism in the past. When my grandfather was young, he was in the Holocaust. He is one of a few childhood survivors of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Jews have experienced anti-Semitism for a long time, and even now

it still happens. By making non-Jews aware of our traditions, we will help change people’s thoughts and opinions. We can each make a huge impact — one person at a time.

Jewish Artist Series with Margie Samuels Mondays, 12:30-2:30 pm

Do you want to learn a little more about some well-known Jewish artists? CAI congregant Margie Samuels, a local artist and instructor,

will teach a series of four two-hour classes, each dedicated to one artist. The classes will begin with a PowerPoint discussion about the artist’s work and what makes that painter special. Then, participants will do art projects in that artist’s style, inspired by the artwork under discussion.

No experience is required — just a desire to have some fun, learn about cultural icons, and engage in some creative expression. Materials will be supplied.

Everybody Knows My Name

I recently came back from a wonderful visit to Israel. In the short time I was there, I walked for miles, visited with family, slept in five different cities, explored underground caves, and attended an historic event. Every day was different but one thing stayed the same; everybody knew my name.

As soon as I arrived at the airport and handed my passport to the person behind the counter, I was met with “Shalom, Geula,” no quizzical looks and pondering how does one pronounce that name.

In the coffee shop in the morning, the barista heard my name and was able to spell it on my cup.

In the hotel, the woman at the desk pulled up my reservation and greeted me by name (pronouncing it perfectly).

None of this is surprising for anyone reading this with an English name. But, growing up with a Hebrew name in an English-speaking country, it’s surprising, exciting and comforting all at the same time.

Every time someone said my name, I thought about the importance of a name in building a positive relationship with another person.

In school, teachers work hard to learn everyone’s name quickly to assure that they feel connected and know that they

belong. Greeting someone by name reassures them that they are in a safe trusting environment.

Knowing someone’s name is the foundation to positive relationship building. When young children have close and dependable relationships they are assured that the people around them are there to provide love and nurturance. The sense of security provided by the responsive interactions encourages children to grow and thrive. Children know when they are in the presence of caring adults, and they attend to

what those adults say and do.

Home visits, photo books, slow transitions and small group learning are some of the key components our school has in place to foster those kind of relationships. When children come in to the classroom, they see their names on the wall, their names on their cubbies, and their pictures all around. In this way the environment itself supports the loving connection.

Teachers intentionally say children’s names, look at them closely and make positive affirming statements to children throughout the day. In this way, we give them the chance to know they are loved and they belong.

Every child who comes to school at Agudath Israel knows that once they enter the door,” everyone knows my name.”

Psychotherapy: What, Me?

I’m writing this on behalf of myself and my wonderful colleagues at Jewish Family Service of MetroWest NJ.

When we sprain an ankle, we don’t hesitate to see an orthopedist. Yet when we feel weighed down by depression or shaky from anxiety, when we’re losing our temper with family, worried about our children, traumatized by life’s surprises, can’t eat/sleep/enjoy life, we often struggle with whether to seek the help of a therapist.

I have had experience working with people of many cultural and religious backgrounds. I have found that all of them have issues, and sometimes even taboos, around the concept of psychotherapy. As Jews, I find us fairly progressive. Therapy seems to fit our style of relating. Many of us have grown up discussing, analyzing, questioning, and debating everything from the weather to whether or not to use seltzer in our matzah balls. Verbal articulation is highly valued.

Therapy provides us with a safe, comforting place to share our tzuris and challenges, where we won’t feel judged or alone. So why might we hesitate to take advantage of it?

Debunking Myths Around Therapy

1. “Going for therapy means I’m crazy.” I have yet to find out what that means.

2. “It means I’m weak.” It takes courage to talk to someone about your inner world.

3. “My family thinks I should be able to feel better by talking to them.” Family members sometimes feel left out when a loved one talks to a therapist. The goal of therapy is to bring families closer together by learning about communication skills and conflict resolution.

4. “I’ll just feel worse talking about my problems.” Sometimes yes, in the short term, not in the long term.

5. “My child’s therapist just plays with him. It’s a waste of money.” The therapist is using the “play therapy” model. Play is the language of children; it provides a metaphorical representation of their inner thoughts.

6. “My child/teen doesn’t want to go.” Our kids don’t want to go to school, the dentist, etc. We’re the boss. Suggest that they talk about this with the therapist.

7. “The therapist won’t tell me anything my child/wife/husband/mother says.” HIPPA is a good thing here; it allows people to trust the therapist.

8. “If my child needs therapy, I’m a failure.” I remember when the mother was considered the primary influence on a child’s mental health. Research has taught us otherwise. Moms still have their place, but science has taught us to share the wealth. Brave parents get help for their children.

9. “I’m taking Zoloft/Prozac/Seroquel/etc., and I feel better; I don’t need therapy.” That might be the case. If you feel better and, as a result of using medication, your relationships are improving, you’re better focused, and so forth, you’re home free. However, if not, not to worry. Research is clear that the most symptom/life improvement happens when there is a combination of meds and therapy, when meds are needed.

10. “I’m thinking about it but I’m just not sure.” This is easy: Talk to me. I’ll help you sort it out and come up with a wellness plan.

Japanese diplomat Chiune Sugihara was honored as a “Righteous Gentile” for risking his career and future to save more than 6,000 Jews. In March 1939, Sugihara was sent to open a consulate in the Lithuanian capital of Kaunas. From July 31 to Aug. 28, 1940, he sat for hours writing visas by hand for desperate Jews. Sugihara said, “I may have to disobey my government, but if I don’t, I would be disobeying God.” Today, it is estimated that the descendants of the “Sugihara Survivors” number some 40,000 Jews. A movie that captures the greatness and courage of one man.

PASSOVER/PESACH SALE OF HAMETZ


The Biblical injunction is that “no leaven shall be seen or found in your possession during Passover.”

Although it was not easy in earlier days for people to rid their entire household and properties of leaven products, it is somewhat more difficult today. We now buy things in bigger packages, can preserve them longer and tend to keep them for longer periods of time.

IN ORDER NOT to be compelled to dispose of all leaven products in our possession, we have legal provisions for the sale of all of our hametz. We invite every member of the congregation to appoint Rabbi Silverstein to represent them for this transaction. The Rabbi will then “sell” everyone’s hametz to a non-Jew for the duration of Passover. After the holiday, the Rabbi will symbolically buy it back.

Having a Great Time with Men’s Club

The annual blood drive on Jan. 5 drew 42 people to donate blood, a big increase over previous years. Thanks to Chuck Rettig for organizing the event and to Joseph Kelmanovich and Steve Eisen for their assistance.

We were thrilled to participate in the North Jersey Men’s Club Regional Man of the Year dinner in January with a large contingent from CAI to honor our Man of the Year: Mark Englander.

At the Texas Hold ’Em Poker tournament on Jan. 12, 40 men participated, ate Chinese food, and watched the football playoffs. What could be better! Thank you to Steve Holinstadt, Michael Simon, and Michael Gold for running the event. A big congratulations to Arthur Bocian for winning the tournament.

Three events took place in February: some 30 people participated in the annual pilgrimage to the Prudential Center in Newark to see the Devils play the Montreal Canadiens on Feb. 4. David Moses once again did a great job pulling this together. Our Men’s Club joined many others participating in the World Wide Wrap on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 2. Each year this event brings men together to teach children about how to put on tefillin and say the appropriate blessings.

The CAI Men’s Club also organized the packing of the Yom HaShoah memorial candles, which were distributed to the entire congregation. Please consider sending a donation to help offset the cost of this important yearly commemoration.

Tremendous events are continuing in March. Men’s Club members will again run the kitchen at the Purim Carnival, dishing up great burgers and hot dogs on Sunday, March 8.

Another of our key social events will take place on Thursday, March 26, at 8 pm, when we get together to watch the

NCAA March Madness tournament. Basketball will be streaming, and there will be plenty of

Environmental Perspectives for Purim

Did you know that the environment and sustainability relate even to Purim? Here are some thoughts:

1. When planning for Purim, think ahead and plant parsley for your Passover seder! It can be done easily, inside your house or apartment. Locate a sunny (southern-facing) window, find a container with drainage holes and a saucer (to catch water) that fits on your window sill, fill the pot with potting soil, sprinkle a few seeds on the surface of the soil, and cover with a quarter-inch of additional soil. Water regularly to keep soil moist. Expect seedlings to emerge in three weeks.

2. According to the Talmud, Queen Esther was a vegetarian while living in Achashverosh’s palace, to avoid violating kosher dietary laws related to meat and to keep her Jewish identity hidden.

3. Remember: Recycle/Reuse/Repeat — Make a costume from something you already have at home; the possibilities are endless.

4. Make hamantaschen with your own home-made or local jam, rather than using those with artificial flavors or from cans/plastic containers that may contain chemical liners.

5. If you give mishloach manot yourself, include sustainably sourced fair-trade items (such as those from Equal Exchange), reduce items packaged in plastic, and include

colorful, locally grown produce, such as apples and root vegetables.

6. To get you into the Purim mood, watch the recent University of Chicago Hillel Latke versus Hamantash Debate (news.uchicago.edu/taxonomy/term/36385), which centered on “Which can best benefit our biosphere?” University of Chicago Hillel earned the Hazon Seal of Sustainability for their composting and green food efforts, and environmental themes are the focus of this debate.
