2019 March Edition
Warrina Innisfail
Leader in excellent innovative aged care services
Happy New year to all in the Warrina Family.
This is our first Newsletter or the 2019 year – a year where so much is happening at Warrina.
The big happenings include:
1) We have commenced building our new 2 storey facility to provide 64 high care beds in
the very best possible surrounds. Site establishment commenced on the 11th March.
2) Dealing with the fallout from the Royal Commission into the provision of aged care services. It is
disappointing that there are no “Good Stories’ that are likely to be shared but a number of dreadful
examples of where care has gone wrong.
3) The introduction of brand new Quality Standards from July 1.
4) Examine the ongoing role of Home Care in the local market and consider if Warrina might become
involved
5) Seeking to attract and keep well trained professional staff to ensure that our level of care is always at a
very high level.
6) AND THERE WILL BE MORE.
The biggest challenge will be to find where the necessary money will all come from (there is a crying need for
lots more money). Let’s all “watch this space” and see what happens.
While I am on serious topics I would like to share an article from a wonderful Aged Care Blog –
The Donaldson Sisters ( www.thedonaldsonsisters.com.au ). It really should be essential reading.
70% of older Australians are unprepared for end-of-life decisions
New research from Advance Care Planning Australia (ACPA) has revealed most older Australians don’t have
an Advanced Care Directive (ACD) – leaving no instructions in the event that they are unable to make their
own medical decisions.
The largest and most comprehensive piece of research into the frequency of ACDs in the country, the study
reviewed health records for individuals at the ‘point-of-care’ in 51 hospitals, aged care facilities and GP clinics
across six states and territories.
Less than a third of people reviewed had an ACD in place, while few of these had documented their
preferences for care or appointed a Power of Attorney to make critical decisions on their behalf if they lost
the capacity to do so themselves.
Don’t leave it to chance
Dr Karen Detering, Medical Director of ACPA says it’s “concerning” that so many Australians are leaving it to
chance and not taking active control of their future healthcare, especially in the face of an ageing population.
“Without a plan, older people may be left vulnerable and potentially without a voice. And far too often loved
ones are left to blindly make decisions under the worst circumstances,” she said.
Agreed – these findings are incredibly worrying. Planning for the future is a vital conversation between an
individual and their loved ones and should always be had as early on as possible.

**PRESIDENT’S REPORT**
The provision of aged care in the 21st century comes with unprecedented regulation, compliance and
governance. A lot happens behind the scenes to ensure that each resident receives the best care and
attention possible. The Royal Commission into the Aged Care Industry will be investigating these and many
other matters. In an industry as large as aged care, there are invariably going to be the odd sad case and
bad news story. This must not however overshadow the exceptional work that many, many organisations
perform throughout the country, including most notably Warrina Innisfail. You can be assured that the
team at Warrina Innisfail continue to be as committed and dedicated as ever to ensure that each and every
resident receives the best possible care that Warrina is proud and reputed to provide.
The Warrina Board and its Governance Committee ably chaired by Diana O’Brien continues to work hard
behind the scenes in ensuring that the organisation adopts best practice in the areas of governance and
compliance and in keeping up-to-date with the latest legislative and regulatory changes in the area.
Our much anticipated redevelopment work is on track and has commenced in late February 2019. We are
all hoping that the recent run of fine weather continues so that the development can run smoothly.
The Board's Vice President Kevin Bliss has been working tirelessly behind the scenes with respect to a
pathway connecting Warrina Aged Care to the Warrina Lakes Facility which will be a wonderful feature and
public amenity. Progress is being made with the Council throwing its support behind this very worthwhile
project.
Once again, my thanks go to the board, the staff and most importantly to you, the resident, who we are all
proud to serve.
Chris Kahler President

**DIRECTOR of NURSING** Hello everyone
Welcome to our Autumn newsletter and hopefully a little cooling of the weather.
As you are no doubt aware there is currently a
large amount of activity and interest in the aged
care industry.
With the commencement of the Royal
Commission, the transition to the new Aged Care
Quality Standards, the introduction of the Aged
Care Quality and Safety Commission, there is
certainly a lot going on in Aged Care.
At Warrina and Villanova we remain focused on
you the resident/consumer, as we continue to
strive to provide the best possible care we can.
Our focus on ensuring you are treated with dignity and respect at
all times with an emphasis on understanding you as an individual
and your uniqueness is paramount to us.
We continue to support you to exercise choice and independence
and encourage you to decide when family, friends and others
should be included in your care.
Another thing I would like to share with you is our increased focus
on a continuance of your lifestyle interests and activities.
Maintenance of past and new relationships as well as activities of
interest will continue to form the basis of our leisure and lifestyle
program.
At Warrina and Villanova we are always interested in your
feedback and comments, so please do not hesitate to bring them to our attention.
If you would like to speak to me directly, please come and see me or advise the staff you would like me to
visit you.

**WARRINA INNISFAIL - VILLANOVA ACTIVITIES **
Villanova Continues to be a most enjoyable environment to live and work in.
We have had a lot of resident changes and It is surprising that male residents now outnumber women
- Very unusual in aged care.
We recently had an unannounced Accreditation visit which we passed but we must never take this for
granted as we keep striving for Excellence.
An influenza A outbreak at the end of last year was an unfortunate occurrence which saw a number of
very sick residents and staff but with the assistance of the Health Department and Warrina Staff input
that went over and above the call of duty we got through it.
We will unfortunately be saying good bye to a number of integral staff members this year with
Maryland Santacattarina retiring and going to live in Perth with family and also Stephanie Rosemond
going back to Brisbane, Sue Wallace is also retiring up to the Tablelands. It will sad to see these staff
members leaving as we all have a close bond.
An example of this was a display of all our baby photos and a competition of who could guess
the correct. Do you think you can Guess who they are?

**WARRINA INNISFAIL - ACTIVITIES **
What a busy few months we have had to bring 2019 in with a bang.
New Year’s Eve parties were held as well as celebrating all things
wonderful about Australia Day and Valentine’s Day.
Entertainer, Sam Pappalardo, put on a great performance for our
Australia Day concert although all things didn’t go quite to plan due
to the rainy weather. A typical Australian BBQ lunch was shared after the concert.
Valentine’s Day was celebrated in each unit this year providing the opportunity for all areas to do a
smaller “High Tea” to make the day a little different. Hostel shared plenty of food and great times.
There was even a sneaky kiss between husband and wife. Roses were kindly donated and provided to
each resident. In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, bunches of roses and chocolates were Lucky Door
prizes.
Exciting times are coming for Activities with BIG activity programs in the making … WATCH THIS

**QUALITY & ALLIED HEALTH **
Over a period of three days during February, Villanova, Nursing Home and Hostel received an
unannounced visit from the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission. And I am more than happy to
inform you that all three RAC’s have met the expected outcomes reviewed
At the top of their list was expected outcome 4.7 Infection Control. This was of no surprise, as both Warrina
and Villanova had periods of closure as part of Outbreak Management procedures. Areas of strength
during this period, highlighted by the Department include:
Residents and representatives interviewed are happy with current procedures in prevention and
management of infection
Warrina’s policy and procedures support an effective Infection Control program
All staff and residents are encouraged to be vaccinated
Informative Care Plans
Other areas reviewed include, 4.4 living environment for Warrina and for Villanova 2.4 Clinical Care.
Feedback given by assessor Jill Winny at Villanova’s exit meeting include:
VCM Jane Murphy was very helpful.
The 6 residents and 2 staff interviewed were more than happy to help and answer questions
Observed good care provided
Documentation on care was also good
Very clear processes – (if someone was to leave, it could be run by someone else)
Hostel and Nursing Home had two days of review with two assessors. The assessors identified that Warrina
is actively pursuing continuous improvement. Also assessors interviewed a combined 17 residents and
representatives, 5 care staff, 10 hospitality staff, 2 registered staff and 10 senior staff.
Other avenues the assessors used to review Warrina’s performance against the expected outcomes is to
review documentation and observation. Documentation and areas observed while on site included but not
limited to:
Policies
Training Calendar
Infection Control data
Clinical indicator summary
Handover charts
Meeting minutes
Activities program
Interaction between staff and residents
Equipment
Great job, well done to everyone.

In 1993, the Brisbane Broncos were premiers for the second year in a row, Paul Keating won the ‘unwinnable’
federal election and a handful of committed Warrina employees rolled up their sleeves and got to work. Their
loyalty 25 years later is the stuff of legend. Hospitality Worker Wendy Johnson, Administration Manager Jan
Mitchell, and Enrolled Nurses Lorna Court and Coral Bailiff were recognised late last year for 25
extraordinary years of committed service. And next month, Enrolled Nurse Sue Livingston joins this esteemed
club. Congratulations Sue!
Since our newsletter in August, Hospitality Worker Carol Harris joined the 20 year club, and we also
acknowledge 15 years’ valuable service from Maintenance Worker, Theo van Haaren, Personal Carer Karen
Dobson, and Assistant in Nursing Ruth Jackson.
At around this time, Education Officer Wayne Payne, Villanova Care Manager Jane Murphy, Clinical Care
Coordinator Louise Howell, Personal Carer Linda Hill, and CEO Peter Roberts, all celebrate 10 years of terrific
service.
On behalf of Warrina Innisfail, heartfelt thanks and congratulations to you and all long-serving employees.

Did you know…Warrina Innisfail’s workforce includes four different generations, with the age span exceeding 50
years?
But just because Gen Y might be driven by ‘what’s in it for them’, or just because Boomers might be driven by
things like stability and respect, doesn’t mean that all of them feel that way. Recent research* suggests that ‘the
magnitude of generational differences is small to near-zero’ and that only 2% of an employee’s attitude can be
attributed to their generation. In other words, most of how we think, act and feel has nothing to do with the
generational age group we identify with!
