Happy New Year!Dear Community Member,

Happy New Year! It is hard to believe that 2019 is here and that January is upon us. It is nice to know that the days are getting longer. If you are like so many other community members, you have spent some time over the past month or so refl ecting and creating your resolutions for the New Year. Whether your list of resolutions includes fi tness and health goals, better understanding your fi nances, learning an

instrument or new skill, North Branch Area Community Education has something to help you reach your goal and make your resolutions last.

Some of the resolution highlights in this winter’s brochure include:Painting a Barn Quilt page 8, Making a Leather Bracelet page 8, Retirement page 11, Family History pages 14 & 15, Exercise and Health pages 18-21, Dance Lessons pages 22 & 23 and many more.

If one of your resolutions is to serve and give back, serving on the Community Education Advisory Council (CEAC) is a great way to accomplish this goal. Th e CEAC meets monthly to discuss programming, special events and community engagement initiatives to better understand and serve the needs of the community. If this is your resolution, please contact the Community Education offi ce at 651-674-1025.

Youth Connections is our fi rst-class childcare program for students ages 3 through 6th grade and is still accepting registrations. Our friendly staff provide wonderful care for your child while meeting their social and emotional needs in a fun and safe environment. Youth Connections has two sites; the North Branch Area Education Center and St. John’s church in Stacy. Both sites off er the same fi rst-class childcare for your family. For more information on our fi rst-class Youth Connections program check out page 33.

North Branch Area Community Education is always looking to engage with our wonderful community. One of the best ways to do this in the 21st Century is through social media. Community Education Citizen Advisory CouncilNorth Branch Area Community Education strives to promote citizen involvement and to provide lifelong learning opportunities for district residents at every age. We gain insight on what opportunities would benefit area citizens by engaging a group of representative community members on our advisory council. The Community Education Advisory Council (CEAC) meets eight times throughout the school year to discuss current and future trends for the educational and enrichment interests of our community.

Mandala Rock Painting Ages 8 and olderDo you love Mandalas like we love Mandalas? they are everywhere lately and are widely used for relaxation through coloring, mosaics, and so much more. How about a night of relaxation with us? In our class, we will be painting mandalas on beach stones! This class will feature a presentation on Mandalas, their meaning, and history as well as many different styles of Mandalas that you can consider painting on your rocks. Registration fee includes all the materials you will need. You can make as many Mandala Rocks as you want in the time we meet. Keep them for yourself or give them away as gifts! This class is family friendly and great for all ages 8 and older.

Painting Barn QuiltsPainting barn quilts is a popular, lively class with guided instruction that will take you through the process of barn quilt painting from beginning to end. Choose a barn quilt pattern from the several dozen offered or you can even bring your own (though instructor will evaluate difficulty level). Instructor will offer a wealth of knowledge regarding barn quilt history, measuring, layout, taping and painting as related to this art form. Students will leave with their own masterpiece ready to hang and hopefully the desire to start a Barn Quilt Trail in their neighborhood. Material fee of $35 payable to instructor at class includes all supplies of 2 x 2 Aluminum Composite, premium, professional quality that will never rust or rot, over 60 colors of the highest quality Behr exterior paints, and all other necessary supplies including the screws to hang your masterpiece. Last, but not least, always, always a dance off, prizes and laughter!

55 Driver Improvement CourseThis driver improvement refresher course is taught by Minnesota Highway Safety and Research Center trained instructors. The class will explore changes in laws, the latest vehicle technology, and provide you with easy-to-use defensive driving tips. In addition, we will explore traffic safety and accident prevention. Mike Lynch Minnesota Starwatch PartyMake the stars your old friends as we watch the great celestial show in the skies. The night will be filled with stars, constellations, planets, star clusters, nebulae, and more! Class will begin indoors followed by quality time outside under the heavens. Large reflecting telescopes, including two giant 20-inch reflectors that are among the biggest mobile telescopes in Minnesota will give you a close up view of star clusters, nebulae, galaxies and other wonders in our skies. You will also receive a handout package with user-friendly star maps and constellation charts, websites, a telescope buying guide, and more! Please dress for the weather and bring a comfy lawn chair. AKC Canine Good Citizen and Trick Dog TestingThese test sessions are for dogs already trained to the required level. This is not a training class but a test to show off your dog’s skill. Passing the CGC means you can get a certificate from the AKC that states your dog is a Canine Good Citizen. Dogs who are eligible for AKC registration or PAL registration (which includes mixed breed dogs) can earn the title of Canine Good Citizen however AKC registration is not required in order to take and pass the test. Trick dog testing is for those people whose dogs are ready to earn a Trick Dog title through the AKC. Drivers EducationNorth Branch Area Community Education is pleased to partner with Right Away Driving School to offer a convenient teen driver education program in our school.

Classroom InstructionThe first part of our Driver Education process it is a 30 hour class. We will focus on road rage, cell phone laws, road signs, impaired driving with drunk goggles and antilock braking system just to name a few. You have to be at least 14 1/2 to take the classroom portion and 15 years old to take the permit test. NOTE: Make up lessons can be completed in any North Branch Area Community Education class or go to the Forest Lake location.

Behind-the-Wheel After passing the permit test, students will need to start the behind the wheel phase. Students are required to complete six hours of behind the wheel. The lessons are provided in three two hour sessions with a licensed instructor from the Department of Public Safety. The student will be picked up and dropped off at their home. Detailed information about behind the wheel will be provided at class.

Fees and Registration$320 includes classroom instruction, materials and behind the wheel training. Permit and road exam fees are not included in registration fee. For payment options please contact the North Branch Area Community Education office at 651-674-1025.

It has been an incredible fall at North Branch Area Public Schools (NBAPS). For the first time since 1966, NBAPS athletes won the state tournament! SKOL! and congratulations to the high school volleyball program!

There are two major announcements I would like to share with you. First, NBAPS and Pine Tech. are proud to announce we are partnering to offer the “Kick Start Scholarship” to all 2019 seniors eligible for free and reduced lunch! North Branch Area Public Schools and Pine Technical and Community College are proud to announce the Kick Start Scholarship, now available to all 2019 North Branch Area High School seniors eligible for free and reduced lunch.

With the support of grants and private donations, all 2019 seniors eligible for free and reduced lunch have the opportunity to complete the first year of education at Pine Tech. free of charge. As well as a free year of tuition, students will receive a $1,000 stipend toward expenses during that first year.

Pine Tech. will also assist eligible students with the Accuplacer assess-ment, financial aid paperwork, and even help with career planning.

plete and submit the free and reduced lunch application found on the main page. It is not required families par-ticipate in the free and reduced lunch program to make use of this scholar-ship, only that they are eligible for the service.

“We are so excited about the Kick Start program and what it means for graduating students who may be uncertain about what comes next. It creates an opportunity for post-second-ary education where there simply may not have been one before,” said su-perintendent Deb Henton. “We are so grateful for the leadership at Pine Tech for partnering with us to provide this incredible opportunity for the families in our community most in need.”

NBAPS fall spotlightThe fi rst day of the 2018-19 school year was September 4, and students arrived fresh from summer vacation and ready to learn!

North Branch Area High School kicked off its PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports) eff orts with an all-school assembly in September.

This year’s Homecoming was a special one, as it featured the offi cial opening of the high school stadium, which has received substantial improvement as a result of the referendum. A new concession stand, permanent restrooms, improved press box, and new turf were included in the upgrades.

The 2018-19 Homecoming Court included King and Queen Ian Scheele and Abby Lyons, and royalty Lily Burnoski, Chloe Goebel, Abby Johnson, Emily Kristo, Matt Courtright, Dawson Drost, Conner Hartmann, and Logan Rustom.

NBAPS fall spotlightSecond grade students are using QBalls throwable microphone this year, thanks to a grant from the North Branch Area Education Foundation. Students are working on building strong communication and presentation skills. Qball gives students with soft voices an opportunity to share and be heard by peers.

SKOL! and congratulations to high school students Ashley Darst and Isaac Ries! Both were named “Commended Students” in the 2019 National Merit Program. Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.6 million students who entered the 2019 competition.

Community Education earned Outstanding Project Award from the Minnesota Community Education Association this fall! The award is for the “Women in Welding” class held last year. NBAPS fall spotlightHigh School Principal Coleman McDonough, Director of Teaching and Learning David Treichel, Community Development Director for the City of North Branch Carla Vita, along with representatives of GPS 45:93, visited the Cardinal Manufacturing program at the Eleva-Strum School District in Wisconsin to learn more about educational manufacturing.

SKOL! and thanks to the North Branch Fire Dept. for stopping by this fall and going over fi re safety with Early Childhood Family Education parents.

On Oct. 24, North Branch Area Middle School celebrated Unity Day - taking a stand against bullying behavior! Student council decorated the school with orange banners and orange messages at entrances. The purpose of the event is to send a clear message that students and staff care about each and every student and that bullying will not be accepted in school or the community.

Fourth grade students had a great time reading with football players this October! SKOL! and thanks to the football team for promoting reading to younger students.

NBAPS fall spotlightCongratulations Joseph Nihart and Matthew Stuber! Both cross country runners qualifi ed for state! They placed 11th and 12th out of 111 Section 7AA participants. SKOL Vikings!

In their fi rst meet of the season, North Branch Area Middle School’s knowledge bowl team took 6th place out of 48 teams in the tournament at St. Katharine Drexel in St. Cloud. SKOL!

Veterans Day is an important one at North Branch Area Public Schools. Veterans are invited into our schools at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. At the middle school (pictured), veterans greet students in the morning, and fi fth grade students participated in a short program along with veteran volunteers.

On November 10, Viking volleyball defeated Marshall three sets to two to capture the state championship in class AA! The squad brings home the fi rst state championship trophy since 1966!

School District policy on background checksVolunteers assigned to work with classrooms, volunteer coaches, Community Education instructors and independent contractors who are not directly supervised and who work with school-age children must have a criminal background checks in North Branch Area Public Schools.

The cost for the background check is $15.00 payable to the BCA and paid by the volunteer.

Managing a crisis in the schoolsSchools in the district have spent considerable time developing a comprehensive crisis management plan. With help from local law enforcement, fire and emergency personnel, the plan is designed to help district staff respond to a wide variety of emergency situations.

Each school has prepared for potential crisis situations by: establishing evacuation route; designating safe shelter areas; practicing lock-down, fire and evacuation route with students; and training staff members on emergency procedures.

Parents’ role during a crisis the district will communicate with parents - depending on the crisis situation - with phone calls, updates to the website, the Emergency & Weather Hotline or TV/radio announcements.

Scheduling priority:To provide maximum use of school facilities with minimum conflicts, it is necessary to schedule groups on a priority basis as follows:

Class 1: District #138 sponsored activities.Class 2: Nonprofit youth organizations. Nonprofit youth with 501(c) form. Nonprofit public agencies, civic and service groups.Class 3: Class 2 when charging admission. Nonprofit youth group when majority are not residents of the school district or if activity is not open to the public.Class 4: Out of district groups and businesses. Private parties.

Frequently asked questions:1. Why do community groups pay to use school facilities? Access to facilities involves added costs such as utilities, cleaning, consumable supplies and additional wear and tear. These costs are absorbed by the regular classroom if they are not charged back to the user.

2. Where does the revenue from facility rental go? The revenue from rentals goes back to the School District’s General Fund to replace consumable supplies, offset utilities and maintain the facility.

Facility UseDistrict 138 encourages the use of school facilities by district residents.

District InformationSchool Facility UseISD #138 North Branch Area Public Schools facilities & fields are available for use by groups/organizations. If you wish to use a facility, you must register your request 10 days in advance of the use, with the Community Education office. A facility use fee, rental and/or custodial fees will be charged. For security reasons only the main doors of each school are unlocked. Security badges must be worn.

Distribution of Materials and Advertising OpportunitiesOrganizations interested in distributing flyers for a fee about youth activities through the school must bring a copy of the information to the Community Ed office at least one week prior to printing to get approval. The school district disclaimer must also be printed on any flyers that are sent home with students. Advertising guidelines and fees are available online at www.isd138.org

Home Baked/Cooked Foods at North Branch SchoolsFor the safety of our citizens, it is a district procedure to NOT PERMIT home baked/cooked foods to be eaten at events held in district buildings. Prepackaged items and licensed caterers/restaurants may be used.

North Branch Area Public Schools Chemical Application to FieldsChemicals, both fertilizers and pesticides, will be applied to district grounds twice a year in mid April and again in early June. In addition, fertilizers may again be applied in October for a third application. All users are advised to stay off of treated fields for twenty-four hours.

Smoking on School GroundsAll school district buildings and grounds are smoke free. Citizens who are observed smoking or using tobacco products in school district buildings, on school grounds, or in/on vehicles shall be asked to refrain from smoking. Violation of the Clean Indoor Air Act is a petty misdemeanor and an injunction can be instituted against a repeat violator.

Inclement WeatherDuring Inclement Weather, North Branch Area Schools may announce

Two hour late start - means morning Community Preschool and Early Childhood Family Education classes will be canceled. School Age Care Program open. Afternoon & evening classes will continue. Community use of facilities allowed.

School Closed - If it’s closed due to inclement weather for the entire day, all activities and community use of facilities will be canceled.

Early Dismissal - means ALL Community Education classes, ECFE programs, and Youth Connections for the balance of the day are canceled. No community use of facilities.
