The dates for your new diaries areTuesdays 7 and 21 January and 4February either 14.00 at 43 Park Avenue,Gravesend, or 19.30pm at No. 84Tearoom and Eatery, Echo Square oneach date.
A Last BeatitudeAnd blessed are the ones we overlook;
The faithful servers in the coffee rota,
The ones who hold no candle, bell or book,
But keep the books and tally up the quota,
The gentle souls who come to “do the flowers”,
The quiet ones who organise the fete,
Church sitters who give up their weekday hours,
Doorkeepers who may open heaven’s gate.
God knows the depths that often go unspoken
Amongst the shy, the quiet, and the kind,
Or the slow healing of a heart long broken,
Placing each flower so for a year’s mind.
Invisible on earth, without a voice,
In heaven their angels glory and rejoice

Archbishop invitesmore youngChristians to spend‘a year in God’stime’The Archbishop of Canterbury has invitedmore young Christians to join theCommunity of St Anselm at LambethPalace.Applications are open for the second yearof the programme, which offers peopleaged 20-35 the opportunity to spend ‘ayear in God’s time’ as they live togetheras a community inspired by the monastictraditions. The participants commit to a year ofprayer, studying theology and ethics, andserving the poorest in local communities, adopting a pattern of life devoted to JesusChrist that monastics down the centurieswould recognise. The first year of the programme has seen36 young men and women forming acommunity based at Lambeth Palace.Sixteen residential members from aroundthe world – including the USA, Kenya andAustralia – have been joined by 20nonresidential members who live andwork in London.Archbishop Justin Welby has made therenewal of prayer and Religious life apriority for his ministry. The Prior of St Anselm, Anders Litzellsaid: “I’m looking for people who aboveeverything else want to follow Jesus,
grow in likeness of Jesus by theinspiration of the Holy Spirit and to theglory of God the Father. It is as simple asthat. You can come from any Christiandenomination and any part of the world.“Our first intake have been here for threeand a half months and it’s been anextraordinary journey. It’s been beautiful,it’s been challenging, it has been of Godand I am deeply humbled, very excited forwhat the rest of this year will hold for thecurrent members.”Shannon Preston, a residential memberfrom Minnesota, USA, said: “Having twohours a day to pray is unreal and I’m notsure where I would get that outside of thisyear. I show up and trust that God is thereas well. It’s such a gift.”

CHRISTMAS
My goodness, it’s that time again. Christmas isalmost upon us and our naughty little sheepand his friends are getting more and moreexcited as the days go by. It is a lovely blueskied afternoon for our walk up to church forour First Steps service. We’re going to tell theChristmas story and our naughty little sheeptells me that it really is his very favourite storyand he never gets tired of hearing it. Andneither do I! Into church and our naughty littlesheep and his friends makes themselves com-fortable, ready for everyone to come and joinus. Our naughty little sheep is so pleasedbecause Linda has knitted him his very ownSanta Claus hat and the glittery dragon has gota very smart red and white scarf. They bothstand so proudly on our little altar, knowinghow very festive they look!First in today is Barbara with granddaughterCecily. How lovely to see them again. Gradual-ly the church fills up with Mums, Grandmas, children and babies. It is new baby Abigail’sfirst visit to us. She is only a few weeks old anda real sweetie! When everybody is sitting com-fortably we begin our service. Some of ourbigger children help me to tell the ChristmasStory by bringing up the different characters aswe go along. First come Mary, and Joseph anda very tired donkey. They’ve had a long andtiring journey and a very difficult time findingsomewhere to stay. And to make mattersworse Mary has got a baby in her tummy andit’s decided that it is time to come out! PoorMary! They have had to shelter in an old stableand when baby Jesus does arrive Mary has towrap him in cloth that she has brought with herand lay him in a manger that is full of straw forthe animals to eat! Our naughty little sheep
tells me that it always comes as a bit of a shockto him, each time he hears that. Baby Jesus, wrapped in white linen and lying in a manger isbrought up to our altar. Then an angel appears to shepherds on thecold dark hillside. That must have been a bit ofa shock! She tells them about the wonderfulbirth of Jesus and urges them to make theirway to the stable to see for themselves. It willchange their lives! The angel, a shepherd andtwo sheep arrive on our altar. Then it’s the turnof the wise men. They, too, have had a longand difficult journey, following a beautiful star. They knew that it meant that a special king hasbeen born, not in a palace but in a lowly stable.Who would have believed that God, the creatorof everything, would come to earth to be bornin a stable? So last but not least three kingsjoin the little group on our altar. The childrenhave been very good and helpful. We havesung some of our favourite songs, “Away in amanger”, “ Little Jesus sweetly sleep”, “ Jinglebells” and “ Twinkle, twinkle little star” The bellshave been jingled beautifully, then everybodyis really quiet for our prayers. So many thingsfor which to thank God, not least for His loveshown to us in the coming of Jesus. Then it’s time to go into the hall for mince piesand shortbread biscuits, yum! Our naughty littlesheep is keen to show off his new Santa hatand the glittery dragon wants everyone to seehis new scarf. They are bothso happy and proud, thanksto Linda and her skill! As wewatch everyone having agood time together, theyand I want to wish everyonea very happy Christmas andNew Year. We look forwardto seeing everyone again onthe 13th January, when it won’tbe quite such a New Year!God Bless,Rosemary Austin

All arewelcome – if you can do basic DIY please let us know in advance so that thechurchwardens can plan jobs in advance.Working party is almost always on the second Saturday of each month…NOTE the next one will be on 9 January at 9.30.

Bringing churchesto life - an updatefrom Bishop JohnInge from NovemberGeneral Synod“The recent report of the Church Buildings ReviewGroup which I chaired and which was welcomedunanimously by General Synod in November iscurrently out for consultation. Please read it andrespond. The deadline is 29 January 2016. Thereport provoked a lively debate in Synod and itwould be good for very many more people tobecome involved.
“There are those who maintain that our churchbuildings are a millstone around our neck and animpediment to mission. We disagree. Though some
churches will need to be closed we believe that themood music should be much more positive, recognising the potential for the gospel and for thegood of society that our churches represent. However, in order for that potential to be realisedwe believe change is needed.
“The Report includes suggestions that diocesesshould be more strategic in their missionalapproach to church buildings. It also makes specificproposals to streamline the manner in which thenational church institutions assist with thestewardship of church buildings.
“More fundamentally, we suggest that a number ofchurches have become more like museums bcause of a lack of awareness that both parts of ourLord’s summary of the Law have repercussions forchurches, as they do for disciples. The first purposeof churches, as with human beings, is to worshipGod and churches generally do reasonably well onthe first Great Commandment.”

Peter Shearan has published a book with the abovetitle about a real-life lady who acted as churchcaretaker in Christ Church one hundred years ago. Herlife began in 1835, when King William IV was on theBritish throne, and when stage coaches were acommon sight passing through Gravesend; throughthe Great War; and only ended when she died at theage of 85, by which time she had witnessed many ofthe marvels of today’s life (aeroplanes, motor cars andbuses, and electric light to name only a few). Peter haswoven the tale of what he has found to have been aremarkable woman around all the known facts:through doing so he has come to know her well(although he wishes he had known her personally!).His book is on sale now, price £10.
All proceeds from the sale will be going towards aplanned commemoration of WWI in Autumn 2016.

C of E and ArchbishopJustin welcome COP21agreementWelcoming the climate deal reached in Paris, theArchbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, said theglobal church must be a key partner in tacklingclimate change.
“I warmly welcome the agreement that almost 200states came to in Paris on Saturday, setting a clearand ambitious path towards tackling global climatechange.
“As faith leaders, we urged those participating inthe negotiations to apply the best of our world’sintellectual, economic and political resources toreach a legally-binding global agreement to limit theglobal rise in average temperatures to 2°C. Thecommitment made by world leaders to hold the
increase in globaltemperatures to ‘well below’this level is welcome andcourageous progress.
“Those most affected byclimate change are the poor.In our prayers and actions wemust demonstrate our love forthem through sustainable andgenerous innovation.
“The success of thenegotiations to bring togetherso many different countriesand groups to an agreementis a remarkable achievement.
“One of the AnglicanCommunion’s marks ofmission says that we are “tostrive to safeguard theintegrity of creation, andsustain and renew the life ofthe earth”. The global church– extraordinarily led on theissue of climate change byPope Francis and theEcumenical Patriarch – mustbe a key partner in tacklingclimate change. As the Bodyof Christ, his church is calledto be incarnational. Each ofus has a role to play, if we areto help achieve what hasbeen agreed in Paris.”

Many aremalnourished and in need ofmedical help, but are unsure ofwho to turn to. Much of this goesunseen, but becomes apparent atnight as uncovered by membersof the Street Pastors andFoodbank teams. Although thereare local government andcharitable organisations seekingto address this problem, the realityis that some will remain homelessover this winter.
