It was a mixture of the locomotion of my muscles and the sifting of my thoughts which walking allows that helped me to find both a sense of purpose and a sense of peace.

Surrounded by the benign indifference of nature – which didn’t care about coronavirus or my Dad being dead – really helped me reconnect with a wider picture as well as with my Dad. My father had always loved the natural world and walking. We had gone on walks as a family and with friends as children.

I remember my Dad telling me the names of the birds, the plants and the trees (something I could never get to grips with myself) and being out in the woods brought back these warm memories to me. As the months went on I saw other people who seemed to be experiencing some similar rediscovery of the joys of the natural world and the pleasures of a good walk. We would stop and share thoughts on the changing of the seasons or exchange suggestions on new places to visit.

I still go out for walks now even though the days are getting darker and colder as I find the same sense of recharge and reconnection that I did way back at the beginning of this strange period. What’s more I have brought it into my work and now run a weekly walking group with the men’s group I run, The West Leeds Men’s Network. I intend to carry it on as long as I am able to and will remain an evangelist for the humble walk until my own rambles are through

TALES FROM THE LOCKDOWNWALKING BACK TO HAPPINESS

My name is Ian Pepper and I run the West

Leeds Men’s Network: a men’s support group in Armley and Bramley. I’d like to tell you a little bit about walking and what it means to me.

At the beginning of the first lockdown whilst out on what had become my regular daily walk in Gledhow Valley woods I received a phone call to tell me that my dad had died. He had been ill for a matter of days and later we found out it was Covid 19. Everyone deals with grief in different ways and my way was to get out and walk. Unable to concentrate or find distraction and comfort (at least initially) in music, films and books I went on long walks all over Leeds. I would look at my increasingly battered map and find areas of woodland or parkland and make my own routes. Often I would spend all day out and would return feeling tired but all the better for it.
